Merger proposal

I propose that Viewing (funeral) and Wake (ceremony) be merged into Funeral. The reason being that not only are both viewings and wakes the same thing, but they are also a huge part of funeral customs. Both Viewing and Wake are short enough articles that they can be merged pretty easily while expanding the content of the funeral Wikipedia article. Viewing (funeral) and Wake (ceremony) are indeed quite short but Funeral is already very long and untidy so jamming more in there is unhelpful. "Viewing" and "wake" may be synonymous in some cultures but not others. In Ireland viewing is nowadays usually at funeral homes, which don't do catering. Wakes are in a home or hostelry. jnestorius(talk) 19:14, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - plus they are more local, only found in some cultures. Johnbod (talk) 20:18, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I also think that they should not be merged. I will remove the relevant templates. --FocalPoint (talk) 16:13, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Funeral Pin

Nowhere is mention made of the funeral pin (a button or badge), although it seems by a cursory glance at the haul yeilded by a search engine, there are many companies which perform this service.

I should add that this custom is wholly peculiar to North America, and utterly unknown in the rest of the world.

"open casket" is culture-specific

The viewing is either "open casket", in which the embalmed body of the deceased has been clothed and treated with cosmetics for display; or "closed casket", in which the coffin is closed. The coffin may be closed if the body was too badly damaged because of an accident or fire or other trauma, deformed from illness, if someone in the group is emotionally unable to cope with viewing the corpse, or if the deceased did not wish to be viewed. In cases such as these, a picture of the deceased, usually a formal photo, is placed atop the casket.

That appears to be a culture-specific (US-specific??) description. The article merely mentions differences for Judaism... but differences exist also for other cultures / religions. --Ibn Battuta (talk) 20:29, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
