expanded article

I have expanded this stub-class article to a more complete entry. I replaced most of the references which derived from Herb's website. I did resort to one or two blog sources which look adequate. In one case I wanted to use a quote to make a point that was reinforced by reliable third-party sources, so decided to go ahead. In another case I took a fact in good faith: can anyone find a better source for the statement that the SAIC degrees were granted by the U of C? Also, does anyone have an image of him and is willing to put it in the Commons? Alawa (talk) 18:55, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

personal blog taken down

per WP:DEADREF noted that source 29 has been taken down. Content was observed at time of writing. Alawa (talk) 17:22, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Although you could always try the Internet Archive, try to get in the habit of using WebCite. Viriditas (talk) 02:26, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I did not know of this. Will do.Alawa (talk) 14:52, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox and photo

Any objection to an infobox and photograph of Herb? Viriditas (talk)

No objection whatsoever, working on infobox for next week. Is the following too long ? image is a problem as the one I have is of unknown authorship. Will see about expanding the lead without too much redundancy.Alawa (talk) 14:48, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, although I might make a few edits. Lots of non-free images available. Viriditas (talk) 01:29, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is great and I am adding it with slight changes. Thank you! 1. I'm not sure what is wrong with the infobox code that produces the chaff under his name. 2. I decided for the time being not to credit the MA to Uof C as I only have one source explaining the nature of the U of C/SAIC relationship. It is certain he was a fine arts student at SAIC, so I am leaving the degree clarification to the text of the article. Alawa (talk) 01:49, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. However, it is slightly unusual to use a painting of an artist in place of their image. Is there any objection to my uploading a non-free image and moving the painting into the body of the article? Also, the photograph of the painting is of such poor quality (is that the reflection of a flash I see?) that it might be better to remove it altogether. Viriditas (talk) 09:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please, do upload the image. I have a very good non-free copy of the image of the same painting which I will upload. I've only hesitated because I find the instructions intimidating, but I'll figure it out. Thanks for fixing the infobox.Alawa (talk) 14:12, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What an amazing image! Good job. Viriditas (talk) 14:38, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but it is Herb who made it. I'm totally confused how I got it to appear. Feel free to change the layout with your image of HK. I also think I have to ask for some help cleaning up. The thumbnail for this image is same as the non-color-corrected version, and there is a new file page duplicating it which has none of the templates or fair use info, since I thought I was sending it to my sandbox. I don't know how to delete that redundant image at File:Cook entering kealakekua med.jpg . BTW no one has approved this for a DYK (25 July). Alawa (talk) 15:30, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will address all of these issues when I come back in about eight hours. Viriditas (talk) 15:39, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should support the ALT3 DYK. There was nothing wrong with your original DYK other than it needed trimming. I don't understand Tony's "interest" objection. In any case, orphaned, non-free images like File:Cook entering kealakekua med.jpg are tagged with variants of the {{db-f5}}, and it looks like that has already been done. Viriditas (talk) 22:31, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at my sandbox you can see another way to deal with images. BTW enlarge the painting and it goes to the old version. uhg. Suggestions? Thoughts?Alawa (talk) 22:03, 2 August 2011 (UTC) I have gone ahead and changed the images but still open to suggestions.Alawa (talk) 16:09, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like you were having caching problems. I'll bet the image is fine now. Please expand the lead section by summarizing the most significant aspects of the article. If there are notable paintings, please name them, etc. Viriditas (talk) 10:55, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have added to the lede per your suggestions. (The image problem was, I think, a central issue at wikimedia which has apparently been resolved.) I have a list of notable paintings but unpublished source. It would make a nice addition. Alawa (talk) 21:23, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Do you feel I have handled citations correctly in the lede? I am referring to WP:LEADCITE and writing at a higher level of generality, introducing points that are expanded in the article, but I felt some reference might be necessary. I invite comments. Alawa (talk) 13:48, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality

I see that Herb's nationality has been changed from United States to Hawaiian. Would anyone with deep understanding of the implications care to comment? Alawa (talk) 18:05, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, now it has been changed back with the comment that Hawaiian is not a nationality. Is this an issue? Alawa (talk) 18:16, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Birth State

Thanks to Slcspangler for noticing mistake in birth state--it should be Michigan. But the town Slcspangler gave is not sourced and contradicts other sources. I reverted the Slcspangler change, then corrected the state from Minnesota to Michigan but kept Marshfield as township. I hope no offense to Slcspangler. Alawa (talk) 20:58, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
