Uma Devi Pemmaraju (born March 31, 1958 in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India) is an anchor and host on the Fox News Channel cable network. She is also a fill-in anchor and reporter for Fox 5 News in New York City.
Biography
Pemmaraju was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India, but was raised in San Antonio, Texas when her family moved there when she was a small child. She has two brothers.
Education and early career
Pemmaraju received her Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Trinity University (Texas) in San Antonio, where she began her career in journalism (first at the San Antonio Express-News while still attending Oliver Wendell Holmes High School, then at KENS-TV). She has won multiple local Emmy awards over the course of her career in local news, both in Dallas and around the Northeastern United States. Arriving in Boston in 1986, Uma anchored the Channel 56 News at TEN (WLVI-TV) to 1988 with Jack Hynes. Then at Boston's WBZ-TV, she hosted a local children's program and was a tipster for Evening Magazine. Later, she joined the WBZ news department and was cited as Best Anchor by Boston Magazine.[citation needed]
Tenure at Fox News Channel
Pemmaraju signed on in 1996 as a charter member of the on-air team for the Fox News Channel, which first went on the air on October 7 of that year. She worked as an anchorwoman (both longform and news update), host of special programming, and hosted several shows during her first three-year stint at FNC, from 1996-99. She secured many exclusive interviews including an extended conversation with the Dalai Lama. She returned to Fox News in 2003, having come over from Dallas television station KTVT (CBS). For her second tour of duty with FNC, she was brought aboard as a news update anchorwoman and a substitute host for various programs, as well as hosting a number of special programs for the network. She continues to host a series of specials including "Secrets of Success" where she takes a close look at the lives of extraordinary individuals and talks with them about some of the major challenges they have had to overcome as they pursued their life's ambitions and dreams. Pemmaraju remains a Fox news anchor for network programs and breaking news coverage. Uma has also been seen as host of the Tuesday and Wednesday editions of News With A View, which is presented from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern Time (10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Pacific Time) as part of The Strategy Room which is streamed weekdays on the Fox News web site. She has been a regular guest-panelist on Fox's late-night satire program Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld. As of September, 2010, Uma has been hosting America's News HQ from Washington, D.C., for an hour starting at 12 Noon Eastern Time (9:00 AM Pacific)on FNC.
Community Activities
She also devoted her efforts to helping a number of charitable organizations, including serving on the boards of "Big Sisters of Boston", "The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston", The Wang Center for the Performing Arts. She received a number of awards for her community work including a Matrix Award from Women in Communications, Woman of Achievement award from Big Sisters of America, Award of Merit and Distinction from the Mexican Government for efforts to help earthquake victims.
Other information
Pemmaraju is the recipient of numerous awards which include Emmys for her news reporting over the years. She was chosen as one of the up and coming people to watch by the New York Daily News. She has also been a visiting professor of journalism at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was teaching ethics in journalism for 3 years to undergraduate students. Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government also invited Pemmaraju to serve as a visiting professor to teach ethics in journalism to graduate students in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She taught at the school's Institute of Politics for two years. Apart from English, she is fluent in her mother tongue, Telugu.
