Dario Campanile is an Italian painter and sculptor currently living and working in the United States. He is known for striking still life paintings as well as abstract explorations of worldly themes and philosophies. Well known works include background artistry for several Hannah-Barbera productions, album covers for the likes of Lee Ritenour and Herbie Hancock, the 75th Anniversary Paramount Pictures logo, and most recently, selection as one of 85 artists participating in a multi-media art exhibition known as: "The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama."

Biography

About the Artist:

Campanile was born April, 1948 in Rome, Italy. As a self-taught painter, he began working with watercolors and oils at a young age and was influenced by the works of Caravaggio, Magritte, Delvaux and Tanguy, as well as the numerous works of other masters available to him as a child in Rome. He was encouraged to continue developing his work by notables such as Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali and Madame Lucille Duillars and was winning awards and being featured in shows by the age of 19.[1]

Campanile first came to the United States in 1973, where his work was so well received that he relocated to California. There he became a well-known Hollywood artist, creating widely recognized album covers, artistry for Hanna-Barbera Productions, and the famous 75th Anniversary Paramount logo, as well as showing in galleries around the world. In 2005, firmly established as one of the major artists of his generation, Campanile settled in Maui, Hawaii. Today he divides his time between California, Hawaii and Italy.

Dario Campanile has had the good fortune of having a long and successful career as an artist. His intense realism and the sincerity of his surrealistic exploration have won the praise of peers and critics from Salvador Dali to Giorgio de Chirico. His works have been shown in both solo and group exhibitions around the world, most recently as one of the 85 artists chosen for the multi-media art exhibition entitled, The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama. For decades, art critics have tried to find a term that defines Campanile’s work: classicism, realism, neo-realism, real-surrealism. These stylistic variations reflect the diverse art forms he pursues, including realistic and surrealistic still lifes, as well as figuratives, abstracts and impressionistic landscapes. He works in oil, acrylics and sculptures in bronze and cast paper bas-relief. Through an extraordinary command of detail and sensitivity to symbolism, he is the master of capturing the essence of the single moment.

Artist Statement About His Work:

“My realism has been my passion since the beginning, but over the years I have never stopped exploring the wonder of different forms of expression, using varied mediums. I go back and forth among these various forms like a dance. For me, my art is simply an adventure that never ends.”
