Fifteen Year Society

Nice of you to have uploaded File:Ten Year Society.svg. Could you create a language-neutral version? Could you also create the upcoming Fifteen Year Society.svg? Thanks in advance. Urhixidur (talk) 14:38, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't agree that such a thing is upcoming at all. How do you mean, language-neutral? As in remove the text?  — Scott talk 12:44, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've been contributing since 2004 (June 2), so I'll be eligible for the Fifteen Year Society in three months. As for a language-neutral version of the logo, it would become usable on other Wikipedias, such as the French one. Removing the language ("TEN YEAR" and "SOCIETY") would do the trick, but so would changing the text to Latin ("Societas Anno Decem", I think, but you'd better check with a real Latinist). Once the image(s) is(are) done, I think I can handle the rest of what needs to be done. Urhixidur (talk) 17:57, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Technically, you won't be eligible for it - because it doesn't exist. If versions of the logo are needed in other languages, anyone who speaks them can edit the SVG text and upload a new version. I certainly have no intention of putting Latin on the current logo.  — Scott talk 15:42, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SQUAT

Hiya, I'm wondering if it makes sense to get WP:SQUAT going again since I'm creating and editing articles in this area. The categories (which I am presuming you set up) are great, I have been adding articles and I'm interested to discuss the rating assessment. If you have the time/energy shall we discuss it over at the project? Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 13:59, 20 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mujinga: Hello! I've not had much time for Wikipedia recently but I'm delighted to hear that. I had actually been considering MfD'ing it as it was going nowhere - so it's great that you're proving me wrong. Unfortunately I can't see myself having much more time in the immediate future, so please do whatever you think works. :-) Cheers,  — Scott talk 12:12, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for the response! i'm quite often editing in that area so i'll carry on and hopefully get some more people on board, we'll see, maybe it's too niche. i would like to improve the global coverage and that could bring in more folks. please do pass by anytime, right now i'm working on a few navbox templates. cheers! Mujinga (talk) 15:20, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hellos I don't know if your time/energy situation has changed much since the above, but I was wondering if you have any suggestions for WP:SQUAT in 2021? Cheers and best wishes for the new year Mujinga (talk) 16:13, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infoshops DRV

Hiya, Template:Infoshops got deleted - a bad decision in my opinion so I requested a review. Mujinga (talk) 12:30, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya

Just dropping a note to let you know I'm still here, & glad to see you still active. More or less. Best, llywrch (talk) 08:09, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Llywrch: Hey there, somehow I missed this. Thanks and hope all's well at your end in these trying times.  — Scott talk 11:02, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A wikiarchaeology expedition tangentially involving you

Hi Scott, I trust you're well. I'm not sure if you'd ever tried to look at your earliest contributions in the last couple of years, but if you had, you might have noticed that they were intermingled with edits from a 2001 UseModWiki editor who also had the username Scott. I've just gone and fixed this for all intents and purposes by deleting the offending edits (not necessarily an easy task!) and reimporting them under the correct username, Scott (usurped)~enwiki. This is also how I dealt with a similar situation with Blake several years ago. Here's more or less what happened:

  • In 2001, an editor used the username Scott to make several edits to Wikipedia (example Nostalgia Wikipedia link, as it's impossible to link to their contributions there now).
  • Several of them were re-imported into the English Wikipedia database in September 2002 but because there was no registered user named Scott in the current Wikipedia database, they were imported under user_id 0.
  • I'd forgotten about this until now, but in 2010, I went on a spree of importing all the Nostalgia Wikipedia edits by Scott to here. Because somebody (presumably not you) had registered that username by then, they were imported under user ID #9558.
  • A bug emerged in 2012 that made it impossible to see edits where the user ID was 0 in Special:Contributions. This wasn't properly fixed until around late 2017 or early 2018.
  • When you usurped the username Scott in 2014, the edits with a non-zero user ID number moved to the username Scott (usurped) while the ones with a user ID number of 0 (which were by then basically invisible) were left behind. the usurped username got moved in 2015 to "Scott (usurped)~enwiki" because imported edits aren't counted in the database's edit count field and because of this jawiki user.
  • The user page for Scott at the Nostalgia Wikipedia has its own weird story. As you may well know user pages doubled as talk pages back then. In 2002 almost all user pages were moved by cut and paste from the main to the user namespace, but that page was missed, perhaps because it wasn't listed at the index of Wikipedians. The history of it was deleted in December 2002 after a deletion request that was removed in this edit, while its text was moved to the page then at "User talk:Scott", now at User talk:Scott (usurped)~enwiki. The original history isn't in any of the database dumps I have but I've basically managed to reconstruct it by importing edits from the Nostalgia Wikipedia and the March 2002 database dump. I wouldn't be surprised if that's all the history that existed in the first place because of the way the conversion script worked. I thought I'd dealt with all the old user pages a while back but obviously not!

Hope you don't mind my actions here ... what a crazy situation! Graham87 11:40, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Graham87: Hi Graham - wow! That's a fascinatingly weird chain of events. And very characteristic of the kind of historical issues we get on this specific project combination of software and legacy data. As usual, I'm in awe of your ability to juggle all this stuff. Will you be adding this to your page of fixes that you've done? I never expected to feature on it if so :) Thanks for telling me about it!  — Scott talk 12:31, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I didn't think of adding it to my page history observations list because I thought my listing about old user page history was adequate ... it turns out I'd noted all sorts of random user page deletion incidents in the past! So I've gone and added this one ... I'll add a permalink to this message. Graham87 13:18, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Graph: Yearly change in number of admins on the English Wikipedia

Hi Scott, I was wondering if you're considering updating this graph: File:Yearly change in number of admins on the English Wikipedia.png. It's a good graph and still part of an important topic. Thanks! - tucoxn\talk 21:49, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tucoxn, sorry for taking so long to get back to you - I wasn't editing here much this year. Yes, it's overdue for an update. Since it's usually as of January, I'll get on it when that happens (conveniently, soon) and ping you when it's up.  — Scott talk 02:47, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

History split

Hello, Scott. I was pointed this way by admin Liz, who thought you might be able to handle a request I initially asked of her. It seems to fit in the scope your User page introduction.

Basically, The Falconer (film) was once at a location where it hosted a completely different article. If the history prior to (and including) its redirection here Special:Diff/639541548 on 02:23, 25 December 2014, could be split out and moved to The Falconer (Saturday Night Live), then I think the right history preservation would remain in place for the original topic. If this is something you aren't interested in handling, let me know, and I can seek another admin's help. Thanks, either way! -2pou (talk) 20:44, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 2pou - done! And thanks for sending it my way Liz, I'm always happy to help with these. I saw your comment about the complicated merge I did recently... that was pretty normal. It could have been so much worse ;)  — Scott talk 02:42, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Scott! Man... that Tintin split/merge effort looks like it was painful... Happy Holidays! -2pou (talk) 18:09, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
