... for your help with the images and the review of Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:15, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on getting it on the Main Page! I haven't had much time to write recently (too busy in my real life job) but I hope to be back at DYK and GAN soon. I have my childhood hero at FAC, which is keeping me busy enough at the moment. Happy editing, —Kusma (talk) 16:03, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Abdullah Bin Rashid Al Khalifa page deletion?

Hello, you recently deleted the page for the current Bahrain Ambassador to the U.S. Is it because he has a similar name to another person? NYMediaGuy (talk) 14:46, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No. @NYMediaGuy, you can see the reason in the deletion log. The page deletion had nothing to do with who the person is. I deleted the page because it was too close to a copy / paraphrase of a copyright protected page, so the content was a copyright violation and could not be used on Wikipedia, where content needs to be under a Creative Commons license. —Kusma (talk) 22:37, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can I prevail on you for help?

I am looking for a journal article, which seems like it would be German, but I don't know the name of it in German. The article was written by Varia Kipiani, probably in 1905 or 1906. This newspaper article reported in 1907 that Kipiani's article appeared in the Walbaum Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie. World cat shows only "L'ergographie du sucre" (1905) but the description here and here of that French article seems to be a discussion of the sugar crash, and not a comparison of cane sugar and fructose. After your detective work on Foote, I wondered if you might be able to assist me in finding this. If you are too busy, or uninterested, no worries. SusunW (talk) 22:20, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@SusunW, I am pretty busy but I really like doing this kind of research, so I went right ahead. The title is "Der Kraftwert des Zuckers", and Google makes it look likely that it is on page 674 of Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie, Volume 30, Part 1 (1906). Searching through German library catalogues makes me think this volume hasn't been digitised yet, so you probably need to ask at WP:RX if you want a copy (it is reasonably widely available, for example in the Bavarian State library in Munich: [1]). If you manage to get hold of it and need help reading/translating, just let me know. (I haven't yet managed to figure out what "Walbaum" is in this context, but it is easier to find without that bit). —Kusma (talk) 23:01, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, I'm wrong. I think the thing in Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie is also only a review/short form, and not written by Kipiani (but that may be helpful as a somewhat secondary source). Looking at this Google snippet, the original seems to have appeared (probably under its French title?? in "Ann . de la soc . roy . des sciences méd . et nat . de Bruxelles Bd . XIV . Hft . 1.", so Annales de la société royale des sciences médicales et naturelles de Bruxelles, vol. 14, issue 1. Let me know if you get anywhere with this information, I'm curious to hear more. —Kusma (talk) 23:24, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help. Let me see if there is any avenue for me to obtain. Probably RE, unless I can find anything at archive.org or Hathitrust or figure out the Belgian archives, which so far have eluded me. I am happy to know that you enjoy the hunt, it's my favorite part too. I'm sure I'll be back asking questions as my knowledge of German is that I can count to 100. If I find something, I'm happy to let you know. SusunW (talk) 13:55, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, well that was too easy. The google link says snippet view, but it isn't. If you click on it, it is full access. What I would normally do at this point it type out the page and run it through multiple translation machines, but if you are willing, I would appreciate your help in translating it. If it's a review of her work, so much the better. She's been on my to do list for 3 years and this is the first time that I am actually finding sufficient digitized sources to write her. SusunW (talk) 14:07, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@SusunW, it is snippet view only for me, even if I pretend to be elsewhere :( Can you send me a screenshot? I'll wikimail you in a second. Then I'll check it out and if it is worth translating, I'll send you a translation. —Kusma (talk) 15:49, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've sent it. SusunW (talk) 16:09, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What I cannot figure out is if she did a series of studies on how sugar impacts muscles and fatigue. It seems like that is the case, but I am not sure at this point. Would that I were a polyglot and had easy access to Belgian sources, but alas... SusunW (talk) 16:34, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is something like that, with special focus on fatigue during childbirth. I need to do a few urgent other things now, but I should be able to send you a full translation within the next 24 hours. —Kusma (talk) 16:40, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely no rush. I've been mulling her for three years, so there is no urgency at all. I am very appreciative of your help. SusunW (talk) 16:53, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The article was short enough that I could do it during a short break I had today, see your email. —Kusma (talk) 11:53, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
After seeing your edit summary, I finally understand your question. It is one paper reporting on a series of experiments. Full translation to follow (but perhaps not today). —Kusma (talk) 08:39, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! Taiwanese Mandarin GA Review

First, hi! I wanted to say thanks so much for taking on the article, it's been a pet project of mine for a while. I was very happy to see the review got taken up so quickly, especially by someone with background knowledge. I don't want to drop off the radar — I'm going to try to implement fixes you point out this month. I think I mentioned on the page that I sort of got hit with a bunch of real world life stuff (in a good way!), which I wasn't anticipating when I submitted the review. Just wanted to let you know, and again, thanks so much :) WhinyTheYounger (WtY)(talk, contribs) 19:25, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@WhinyTheYounger, no need to rush, it is fine if it takes another week or two. I am currently also unable to put in as much wikitime as I'd like, although I hope it will get better next week. (This is why I haven't taken on the task of diving more properly into your impressive selection of sources yet!) —Kusma (talk) 21:41, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's taking a bit longer than anticipated. Just wanted to say a) I'm still alive and b) thanks for your patience and thoughtful feedback so far. This will hopefully be my first ever GA, and it was quite the behemoth, as you can probably tell (and still I feel like I only covered a fraction of what I wanted, haha) WhinyTheYounger (WtY)(talk, contribs) 03:21, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@WhinyTheYounger, no worries. It is a tough topic for a first GA, and I know it can be hard to find time to really concentrate on this type of work. I would appreciate it if we could wrap this up before I have forgotten everything I thought during the review, though, so please don't leave it until next year to come back to this. —Kusma (talk) 09:17, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kusma, Just puzzling something over, not disputing anything. I saw you blocked FA for having more than 20 AFC requests open. Could you explain how I can see how many AFC requests someone has open? Is this something you read off a page somewhere, or did you have to go thru and count them yourself? Floquenbeam (talk) 22:09, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Compromise

Pretty sure that this is not the case. Consult their block-log. Bishonen, fyi. TrangaBellam (talk) 19:55, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TrangaBellam, it was the AGF option. If this fits with earlier behaviour (which there was no time to thoroughly research), the indefinite block is also the correct first response. —Kusma (talk) 20:18, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh god not the mobile diff, TB, are you trying to kill me? Thanks for the ping, anyway. I'm afraid I too think the user quite capable of disruption without their account necessarily being compromised. They were certainly disruptive when I last had contact with them, in May 2022, but I got the impression that may have reflected a crisis IRL. Pinging @Abecedare: who unblocked them on certain conditions, and who may know more about the history than me. Bishonen | tålk 20:43, 19 January 2023 (UTC).[reply]
Just use User:Þjarkur/NeverUseMobileVersion.js and you never see mobile diffs :) If the user is known to have episodes of disruptiveness, we'll need to keep them blocked at least until the episode is over (but every nine months or so is a bit often for episodic disruption). Happy to defer to Abecedare. —Kusma (talk) 23:28, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, so am I. There's a script? Brilliant. What a pity Þjarkur seems to have left. Bishonen | tålk 04:11, 20 January 2023 (UTC).[reply]
@Bishonen: the script probably does not work with ScriptInstaller, just with directly loading as described at User:Þjarkur/NeverUseMobileVersion (don't ask me why). At least that's what it was like last time I tried. —Kusma (talk) 09:12, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure — I saw the direct-loading button and used it. (Very convenient, I wish other scripts had them.) It's working fine. Now I just glimpse the mobile diff, before being redirected to the right place. But, oh no, Abecedare last edited two months ago. :-( Bishonen | tålk 09:20, 20 January 2023 (UTC).[reply]
OK, either it was just me, or something has changed in how mobile mode interacts with skins. Great to hear it works as intended. Abecedare seems to have spells of inactivity somewhat regularly, so let's hope they'll be back. —Kusma (talk) 10:37, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's Abe's pattern, indeed. As for skins, obviously all sensible people use monobook. Even my socks do. Bishonen | tålk 11:46, 20 January 2023 (UTC).[reply]
I wanted to say "scripts". No idea why it came out as "skins". The only skin other than Monobook that I have used for any nontrivial amount of time was Modern, back in 2006. No idea why people use anything else :) —Kusma (talk) 12:10, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hello Kusma,

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland/Evidence. Please add your evidence by April 04, 2023, which is when the first evidence phase closes. Submitted evidence will be summarized by Arbitrators and Clerks at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland/Evidence/Summary. Owing to the summary style, editors are encouraged to submit evidence in small chunks sooner rather than more complete evidence later.

Details about the summary page, the two phases of evidence, a timeline and other answers to frequently asked questions can be found at the case's FAQ page.

For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

For the Arbitration Committee,

Thanks!

Hey, Kusma, just wanted to thank you for pointing out that I appear to have a missing pixel in my general effort to be mostly kind. You're right, and I appreciate the feedback, which I consider always a gift. Valereee (talk) 17:04, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Valereee, great to hear from you. I am not sure how right I am, but I am glad not to have to worry about our (somewhat more robust than usual) disagreement some time ago. I am sure that I am also less kind than I should be when I feel strongly enough about something and haven't had enough sleep and coffee :) Please do let me know if I get it wrong. —Kusma (talk) 17:54, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Claire von Greyerz

On 5 April 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Claire von Greyerz, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Claire von Greyerz. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Claire von Greyerz), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Charles III

Kusma, see this. The reviewer passed it. Tim O'Doherty (talk) 16:19, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

My user page was not a hate crime or an attack against someone, and it was indeed actually me who i was talking about, so why would it get deleted? ZestyMonkey2962 (talk) 17:30, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ZestyMonkey2962: Your page was wholly inappropriate and filled with racist tropes. If you write anything like it again, you will be blocked. —Kusma (talk) 19:29, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charles III sources

Sorry for being abrupt before, Kusma, that wasn't my intention, and I apologise. Looking at the sources on Charles III more closely, I can't seem to find the reference from Metro; perhaps you could tell me where it is. I found the one from the IB Times you mentioned (ref 164). Looking at the article, it seems to report on the public's reaction via Twitter. I accept that the IB Times is marked as generally unreliable; however, here they aren't making up a story, and they have the evidence on the article. If you can point me to the Metro ref, I'll gladly replace it. Again, I apologise for saying that you trashed the review, that was wholly unacceptable behaviour on my part.

Best wishes, Tim O'Doherty (talk) 18:29, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tim O'Doherty: No need to apologise too much, I understand that this is a bit frustrating. The article is in decent shape and certainly deserves a more in-depth GA review. Anyway, the Metro source is Reference 7 in the current version and can probably be deleted without harm. I don't want to review the article, but if I did, I would probably also raise a "broadness" concern: shouldn't we learn a little bit more about his sons? Good luck with getting this to GA level. Happy editing, —Kusma (talk) 19:28, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Therese Forster and Isabelle de Charrière

Hello Kusma, Today 2111 letters of and to Isabelle de Charrière are put online with 14 letters to Therese Forster and one from Therese. The coming year one will put the last 500 letters online. See: https://charriere.huygens.knaw.nl/fr/601-2/ Boss-well63 (talk) 20:42, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Boss-well63, that is great! You might be interested in my recent article on her stepfather, one of de Charrière's more frequent correspondents: Ludwig Ferdinand Huber. (Your link finally gave me a sample of his handwriting). —Kusma (talk) 21:09, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The letter from Therese Forster is actually from her mother Therese Huber, before her second marriage. Of the 14 addressed to Therese Forster, 13 are to the daughter and one to the mother. (Why did everybody have the same names, it is infuriating when studying the 18th century). —Kusma (talk) 08:54, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Sixkwnp. For discussing the problem of Taiwanese Mandarin  article.

There are three reasons why I removed it: Firstly, the neutrality of the wording might be misleading. Secondly, reliable reference links need to be added to the description. Thirdly, as you can see from the content of the Chinese entry, "1913年,教育部讀音統一會議定老國音,標音用注音符號。1932年後,以教育部出版之《國音常用字彙》為標準音,與中華人民共和國於1955年制定的普通話標準有一些差異。1945年臺灣進入戰後時期,當時剛結束日本統治的臺灣人並不熟悉國音;在中華民國政府的國語政策與九年國民義務教育下,國語才逐漸普及" As you can see, the it's more neutral than deleted part. Also, I think that if there is controversial content in the overview section, it should be written as a sub-entry below. Sixkwnp (talk) 13:51, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sixkwnp, what the Chinese Wikipedia has to say about 中華民國國語 has very little bearing on what the English Wikipedia should say. The content you removed is a summary of what you find in the section Taiwanese_Mandarin#Under_KMT_rule, where it is cited to reliable sources. What do you find non-neutral about it? Do you think more of zh:國語運動 should be included? —Kusma (talk) 14:03, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, zh:國語運動 is more appopriate and reflecting the historical context also explaining the reasons . Sixkwnp (talk) 14:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sixkwnp, best to explain on Talk:Taiwanese Mandarin what you think should be added/changed. The article is fairly well-developed, and its main author @WhinyTheYounger knows a wide range of sources for it. —Kusma (talk) 14:12, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for the reply! Appreciate it. Sixkwnp (talk) 14:15, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Plantas

Howdy, Kusma! I saw that you have promoted two GAs on the Plantas; I remember you asked me about them a few months ago, so I hope I have been of some assistance. Congratulations on this impressive feat. Cheers, Unlimitedlead (talk) 01:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! There are two more Plantas I have written about: Elizabeth and Eliza. Your answer was helpful to confirm I had most of the information I need about Frederica, and will be quite useful for the Planta I have not yet written about: Margaret [la] (called "Peggy"). I think I'll leave the Plantas for a moment to work on a few other interesting 18th century people but I guess I'll return to her and her brother Joseph Planta at some point. —Kusma (talk) 06:32, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Clara Forster in Bôle

Hello Kusma, You have to read the article: Gabrielle Berthoud, Neuchâteloises du siècle de Voltaire et de Rousseau. In: Musée Neuchâtelois, 46 (1959), p. 97-114. See https://doc.rero.ch/record/12458?ln=fr see page 109-110 where is mentioned that Clara Forster stayed in the house of Sarah/Marguerite Wemyss, daughter of David Wemyss, Lord Elcho who lived in Cottendart and was suiter of Isabelle de Charrière.
