Some mediation work

If, as you indicated on my talk page, you're looking for something to do, I just wanted to point out that there's always a backlog here: Wikipedia:Requests for comment/All. A lot of RfCs go for a long time without attracting comments from anyone but the people involved in the dispute. For example, I suggested RFC to one of the parties at Talk:Ain't and amn't after my third opinion failed to produce a consensus, but so far there's still no consensus. ~Amatulić (talk) 21:30, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tks! • Ling.Nut 00:56, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ling.Nut,

I got the book, and could not find these pictures in it (the edition I got was the 1996 newer Chinese translation, not the 1900 original). Also, I noticed that the sources given on the file pages ([1] and [2]) don't appear to mention this book as the source, as far as I could tell. I haven't returned the book yet, though, so I still have it around if it's needed. rʨanaɢ (talk) 02:03, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I admire this level of attention to detail. Kudos to you both! Ling is performing a great service by struggling to keep Featured status. I'm here in the Bay Area and close enough for trips to the Stanford and Berkeley libraries, if at all helpful. jk (talk) 12:01, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have not spent class time on how to use WP talk pages, except for the most basic (new messages at the bottom). Most WP editors figure this stuff out on their own and/or by interacting with other Wikipedians. My students should do the same.Thelmadatter (talk) 14:46, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help

Hi Ling.Nut! I was wondering if you could help me by going through the contribution I made about Eningen unter Achalm, a German municipality. Could you maybe go through the text and give me support, suggestions...?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Lr.dinghi (talk) 22:35, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • HI Lr.dinghi!
  • I see you have added a lot of content to the Eningen unter Achalm article. That's the right idea!
  • Building an article or report from primary and secondary sources is much more difficult than most people believe it is. People might believe it is similar to making a very basic salad, thinking that you simply mix a small number of ingredients together (maybe some lettuce, some tomatoes, and some mayonnaise), and then you are done! However, it is not that simple. In my opinion, writing an encyclopedia article is very similar to putting together a jigsaw puzzle: you need to find a large number of small pieces of the final product, taken from several sources, and very carefully fit them together. It's a lot of work!
  • It is almost always important to use small pieces of text from several different sources. If you borrow whole phrases or sentences from a source (without placing them within quotation marks or a block quote), then you are copying too much. Copying too much from a source is always the wrong thing to do. It is either plagiarism or a copyright violation. You can read more information about these topics here:
  • Your article uses only two sources, and using so few sources creates many problems. It makes it difficult to avoid copying too much from one source. For example, the article you wrote borrows whole sentences and phrases (sometimes long ones) from the source at Gemeindeverwaltung Eningen u. A.. This is probably a copyright violation.
  • You need to find more sources. You need to be very careful when you take information from those sources and place it in the article. If you use more than three or four words in a row from a source, you need to place that information within quotation marks or a block quote and attribute it correctly. This is more important than correcting any small grammatical errors. You can correct those errors later. Right now you need to watch out for the problem of "too much copying".
  • I know I wrote a lot. I hope this helps. I'm sure your teacher will be glad to help you learn how to quote and cite correctly. If you have questions, I will be glad to help as well. • Ling.Nut 03:05, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Dr Rohani Hashim

Hi, Ling.Nut. Dr Rohani is an ethnic Malay. Their second names are patronyms (generally omitting the word bin or binti), not family names. Hence, they are referred by their first (personal) names. Jappalang (talk) 20:10, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Re your comments on citation templates: It doesn't hurt to be polite. You may find that editors are better disposed to help you if you don't insinuate that they are negligent. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 03:01, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, but those templates are everywhere everywhere in Wikipedia (perhaps unfortunately). This fact brings an attendant responsibility. Neglecting the responsibility to present a high-quality finished product in a case such as this is quite reprehensible. And finally (and perhaps most importantly), polite requests to fix it were made earlier and summarily ignored. Sometimes using imagery such as "please wash your own dishes" hits at the heart of the matter in a way that gets the job done. People then dislike me, but the task is actually completed, rather than left languishing for weeks and months, leaving perhaps thousands of Wikipedia articles looking like amateurish crap. Thanks for your attention to my remarks. • Ling.Nut 03:22, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We are working on the reflection part, so we have to reflect about all the celebrations and the important aspects of the current Mexico. If you have another suggestion please don edit it on that page . let us know so we can change them. thank you for all.Grrbibi18 grrbibi18 00:32, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This week students are working on the Bicentennial of Mexico article and working on proposals for their partial project. They need to have contributed material to the bicentennial article by today, and edit the contribution of one of their group members by Friday. The proposal is for a project due by Nov 5. They need to write a Wikipedia article in pairs or groups of three on any topic. As a companion, they will also write a standard opinionated 5-paragraph essay on the same topic, to get a sense of what "objective" is compared to constructing an argument. They are supposed to contact adopters/others in WP for help in selecting a topic to write about, especially if they are proposing a completely new article rather than expanding a stub or writing a horrible article.Thelmadatter (talk) 11:58, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion query

Hi there.

I just wanted to ask about your !vote here, because it seems rather unclear; I think, possibly, you mistyped or misunderstood something, because you said the page should be redirected to itself, and was more offensive than itself...probably just some misunderstanding?

Please don't think I am asking you to change your mind or anything; not at all...I suspect we have opposing views in there, but it is not my intention to start some discussion - just to point out that I think your !vote might be unclear. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  08:14, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Taiwanese aborigines

The licensing for the image is fine (it is only that the conditions for freedom of panorama has to be qualified). We have the official title, the authorship would be concerning if we go by a strict view (and there are those with a very strict interpretation of the actions required). We could just put down the Chinese government as the author (it is a governmental work in preparation for the Beijing Olympics), but there might be questions on whether an effort was made to contact them to clarify the authorship. Jappalang (talk) 03:55, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am reasonably confident as well that not one of the 5 billion+ human beings on planet Earth (except the minority of us on this project) will bother about copyright (whether this image was indeed published before 1923 or has a copyright notice or has its country of origin as India or Australia), plagiarism, reliable sourcing, aims of neutrality or such when it comes to Wikipedia articles. I think a lot of the issues participants of this project experience at FA/GA (re-)assessments are due to our interpretations of and adherence to the rules laid down. Plainly speaking, my commentary above is to state that while I might be fine with naming the Chinese government as the copyright holder, others might question if an effort was made to ascertain the exact author. Jappalang (talk) 13:33, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I believe {{PD-Art}} is what you are referring to by "Wikipedia believes that photos of flat works of art (paintings, murals) are not copyrightable". Your statement belies a slight misunderstanding; the actual gist of it is "the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) believes that photographs of two-dimensional works of art, which have fallen into the public domain, are not eligible for copyright protection". Their reasoning is based on the U.S. case of Bridgeman v. Corel (1999); the foundation believes such photographs added no new creative elements to their subjects (whose copyrights have expired) and as such do not deserve copyright protection (see commons:Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag). The copyright for the Chinese mural has yet to expire; freedom of panorama is an exception in the law to allow photographs to incorporate certain copyrighted art mainly because the law decides that those art (usually permanently installed in public areas) are just too prominent to be excluded from the "right to take photographs in public areas" (my interpretation).
Unlike the United States, not every government releases claims of copyright to its works (although most of them consider laws and statutes ineligible for copyright protection). The United Kingdom has Crown Copyrights (although it is 50 years compared to 70 years for private works), and Singapore's copyright law applies equally to private and government sectors. commons:Commons:Licensing presents the copyright laws of many countries (still, it is best to verify them instead of taking them at face value). Jappalang (talk) 14:52, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect you are talking about the photographs uploaded by one FormosaSavage? It does not matter what copyright tag he put on flickr. Unless he is the copyright owner of the subject (different from being the copyright owner the photograph of the postcards/photographs), he does not enjoy copyright protection for those 2D works of art if they are in the public domain (the PD-Art argument adopted by the WMF above). Unfortunately, that means we have to be sure (able to prove) that the subjects are in the public domain. Although postcards are published materials, they can be publicly distributed (published) years after the photographs were taken. The best indication is generally the postmark if the postcard was used, or rarely a printed date of publishing (usually at the back). Sometimes, the postcards' date can be identified by certain unique logos the publishing company adopt for certain periods. Unfortunately, FromosaSavage does not make it easy; he rarely uploads the rear of the postcards. This postcard of a Taiwanese shop is in the US public domain because it was published before the start of the Taisho reign (1912) and PD-Japan because it is created before 1945 and published before 1956. This image of aboriginal hunters bears the postmark of 1940 (Showa 14th year), so it is PD in the US as well as in Japanese-occupied Taiwan. The rest of the postcards, however, have to be evaluated separately (even though I am fairly certain they are of pre-1945 vintage as the uploader claims, without the evidence, we cannot say that). One piece of possible good news though, if we can pinpoint the date of this postcard envelope, we can pretty much decide the validity of File:Tsou youth of Taiwan (pre-1945).jpg. Jappalang (talk) 04:46, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Found this site. Unfortunately, since we do not know if the two expat webmasters are authorities on copyright, we cannot hold to their assumption of the postcards' being in public domain. However, there are some that bear the necessary postmarks mentioned above. Public domain photographs that we can assuredly use in http://www.taipics.com/abo_warriors1.php are:
There should be more if you are interested to dig through their archives. Funny enough, there is a 1893 (Meiji 25th year) colour drawing if you would like that sort of imagery at http://www.ramanon.com/forum/showthread.php?74710-Taiwan (image is http://www.baxleystamps.com/litho/meiji/fuzoko_129_18961201.jpg). Jappalang (talk) 05:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On another note, this 1744–1747 painting should be in the public domain by virtue of {{PD-China}} and commons:Template:PD-US-unpublished (although the institute has watermarked their scan...). Jappalang (talk) 05:10, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the 174x painting is printed in Andrade's book (the coloured plate between pages 7 and 8). Jappalang (talk) 06:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

November copy edit drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

Hi! Thanks for dropping by to say hi. I'm working on Falwell v. Lamparello and I would like the autolinking of "www.fallwell.com" to stop happening. I surrounded it in nowiki, but it didn't seem to take. Do you know how I can remove those auto-links? Is this something you can help with? Thanks! LisaFowler (talk) 01:27, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Lisa. I looked at the page in GoogleChrome and MSExplorer (I deleted Firefox; perhaps I should reinstall), and didn't see the problem you noted. The nowiki tags seem to work fine. Am I missing something?
  • OTOH, I did see several external links in the body text (e.g., David Sorkin), and that is considered bad form. If you want to include an external link, you can include it in the notes, or in a separate "External links" section. If you're interested in all the gory details, see Wikipedia:External links or WP:MOSLINK. • Ling.Nut 01:48, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
