Zhenzhou Puhua (Chinese: 普化; pinyin: Zhenzhou Pǔhuà; 770-840) [1], whose name is read as Jinshu Fuke in Japanese, was a Chinese Ch'an (Zen) bhikku-priest, as well as a contemporary and disciple in the [eponymous] Linji/Rinzai lineage of Linji Yixuan (临济义玄; pinyin: Línjì Yìxuán; Japanese: Rinzai Gigen; 800866). Puhua, historically considered one of the most prominent students of his master, shīfu Panshan Baoji (Jap: rōshi Banzan Hoshaku) had a rather notorious reputation as a multi-talented Zen ascetic who was at once inventive, innovative and absurd as well as rough and uncompromising in the way he expressed himself.
