Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Football

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Allan Nonymous (talk | contribs) at 11:21, 29 June 2024 (Listing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alex Punay.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

For American football, see WikiProject Deletion sorting/American football

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Marek Švec (footballer) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

The article of this men's footballer has not received enough significant coverage to pass WP:GNG.

The only secondary source I could find is SME's sub-website My Nitra. It mentions Marek Švec scoring a goal in one paragraph after translation: "The oldest and the youngest players scored a valuable draw. Anton Sloboda was everywhere, and we could see the 34-year-old fighter passing between the stoppers in the back, serving teammates in the middle and setting up a goal for the teenager Marek Švec in the front. The academy graduate scored his third goal, no one under the age of 18 in the top 30 European leagues has scored more in a season... Wow! The youngest debutant in the history of FC ViOn will celebrate adulthood only on New Year's Eve and has already made 22 league starts with five goals." The coverage of Švec is written in bold, but something tells me that the rest are more of a trivial mention.

If this article gets deleted, we should consider moving "Marek Švec (wrestler)" to just "Marek Švec".

Union Stadium (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

The article has no non-dead sources and searches for "Union Stadium south africa" return real information (i.e. not maps or directions). The only search results on JSTOR are a university paper in Wisconsin and a local paper in Ohio, both of which are hardly reliable sources for a stadium in South Africa. For this reason, I feel the article does not meet general notability guidelines. WikipediaNMP (talk) 09:17, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The page was previously deleted because it fails WP:NFOOTY and WP:GNG and it still holds true. Coderzombie (talk) 10:25, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Most of these sources are interviews and paid promotions and do not help pass WP:NFOOTY. The player has not garnered significant reliable coverage for any other achievements because he has not played at an international level and he has not played for an entirely professional league to satisfy WP:GNG. He is an upcoming player but it is too early to warrant a page on this subject because of insufficient significant achievements.

RangersRus (talk) 12:37, 27 June 2024 (UTC)'[reply]

ALl of the sources have tons of secondary coverage that I will gladly cite if asked and there is no indication that any of them are paid promotions... Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 05:34, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thats one of my more minor points, my point is that he was considered such a good player and significant figure in Indian lower leagues that he was called up to senior nationl team. This proves my point that all delete votes are by users who seldom vote on football deletion debates who still think that players have to both meet WP:GNG and WP:NFOOTBALL. Either way, he has many secondary sources about him. Article needs improvement, not deletion. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 23:16, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I never said has to meet both WP:GNG and WP:NFOOTBALL. I am saying he passes neither. Doesn't pass WP:NFOOTBALL because he hasn't played professional football and the sources that exist don't justify WP:GNG Coderzombie (talk) 09:00, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tell me how this article doesnt meet WP:GNG. Im listening... just because he played in thje lower leagues doesnt meen he was a clear topic of interest in Indian football who is probably only lower league Indian palyer to be called up to senior national team.. • Comment - to the closer, nobody has explained how he doesnt pass WP:GNG which he clarly does... just because he played in thje lower leagues doesnt meen he was a clear topic of interest in Indian football who is probably only lower league Indian palyer to be called up to senior national team. Article needs improvement, not deletuon. THanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 02:34, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep These are excellent references. The article is crap, but the subject clearly meets GNG. The previous deletion discussion years ago is irrelevant, given the amount of media coverage is major national papers since then. The GNG policy clearly supports keeping. I don't see what policy supports deletion. Nfitz (talk) 17:19, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - the comment about him being an "upcoming player" is nonsense as the subject is 34 years old. Per Das osmnezz and Nfitz, I cannot see any policy-based arguments for deletion here. The sources mentioned in this discussion would help the development of the article, but coupled with what is already in place there, they appear to establish a sufficient level of notability. C679 16:02, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is a long-unsourced article of a football club that seems to have never played in the highest Slovak First Football League. I can't find any significant coverage of this club that meets WP:GNG. My Google searches, even with "site:.sk" next to the club's name, only come up with club's official website and match reports, the former of which is not independent. Corresponding article on Slovak Wikipedia has been tagged for notability issues for years, which certainly may not help copy over English article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. • Weak keep. Had a good look for sources, plus information in general about this team. They most likely never played in the second tier of Slovak football either. Sport.sk seems to have nothing about them at all. Looking at the SME sources provided by SportingFlyer, I have summarized details of those references to aid the discussion here.
Sources linked on page discussed above by SportingFlyer
Article Overview "more than a trivial mention"

Senzácia v pohári. Fortunaligista vypadol s amatérmi Amateur team Rovinka knocked fully-pro side Senica out of the national cup. Yes

For me there are 6 instances (some overlapping) where I would argue for it being more than a trivial mention – see third column. In addition to the SME sources, the first source from Nfitz in their comment above (Deník) discusses a 2017 "Super Cup" match between winners of regional cups in the Czech Republic versus Slovakia. According to that, Rovinka played in that on account of having won the Bratislava football association cup beforehand, which I found a primary source for here. All in all, I feel this scrapes WP:GNG. More sources may of course exist. C679 15:45, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment The proper time for article creation is likely to be if they earn a cap on the main squad, certainly not before that. Who their parent is doesn't give them a notability multiplier regarding article creation since they're still only on a U15 squad as part of a national league that is effectively on par with a local AYSO club. Fails WP:SIGCOV and WP:GNG. There doesn't seem to be anything here, and a single appearance for the North Korean national team in 2000 doesn't cut it. Anwegmann (talk) 07:18, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article does not meet any notability standards. The most notable thing about him is that he is the father of two players, but this is Wikipedia, not WikiTree. That he managed a high school team may get him some mentions in newspaper articles, but where those don't relate to his more famous sons, they are "local newspapers", which also don't make him notable. The rest is best handled on his sons' pages. Renerpho (talk) 22:47, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Butler is clearly a significant figure in Jamaican football, as shown by the amount of coverage he receives in Jamaican media... Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 06:52, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result was soft delete‎. Based on minimal participation, this uncontroversial nomination is treated as an expired PROD (a.k.a. "soft deletion"). Editors can request the article's undeletion.

I would usually consider an opinion to Draftify an article but with no one offering to work on this article, I think it would just be G13'd down the road. As a Soft Delete, it can be restored to main or Draft space should an editor be interested in developing it further. Liz Read! Talk! 04:53, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can't seem to find any WP:SIGCOV on this player beyond basic coverage either from the clubs, his college, or transfer notes. It appears as though he never actually played a professional match, which might be a failure of WP:SPORTBASIC. The only thing of basic substance I found was this, which is local and behind a paywall. • Weak keep per above. This is clearly not a hoax, and SportingFlyer makes a good point. It's weak, admittedly, but it's a keep for me right now. Anwegmann (talk) 01:21, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • The article is a hoax, because it conflates "national team" with "expat team", and relies on puffery from primary sources to the degree that it makes claims that are demonstrably false. Some actual organization may exist; but it is entirely "we let people put out press releases that pretense to importance which we do not have". Walsh90210 (talk) 02:03, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, a hoax is generally something that's completely fictional, whereas this is an actual organisation similar to ConIFA. SportingFlyer T·C 09:45, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result was keep‎. The eligibility of an article does not depend on its title. If the topic would meet our inclusion criteria under some title but not its current one, then it should be moved, not deleted. After discounting !votes based solely on the impropriety of the title, we're left with a clear consensus to keep. Any editor is welcome to move the page to a better title. Esperanto national football team (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

This isn't a "national football team". In an attempt to propose a move target, I determined that it should be deleted rather than renamed.

For the first match: some attendees at the 99º Universal Esperanto Congress had a friendly game of football during the event. [37]

The rest appears to be cosplay. Walsh90210 (talk) 18:48, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That is simply not true... it literally played in two non-FIFA organization tournaments (COSANFF Cup and Zamenhof Cup) among other games against teams in non-FIFA organizations (Mapuche etc), and on top of that it does meet WP:GNG by any means. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 04:31, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Playing in a non-FIFA tournament is not the claim to fame you think it is... GiantSnowman 17:29, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge to World Esperanto Congress or Universal Esperanto Association. The subject is notable given the multiple reliable sources talking about it, but there's not much long-term coverage and not an enormous amount that needs to be said about it, so it fits better in context with other things the same people have been doing. Mrfoogles (talk) 21:52, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Third option could be Esperanto, maybe in the Culture section Mrfoogles (talk) 21:52, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also like to say that if it does not get merged or deleted, it should be moved to "Esperanto (football team)". I would move it, but this is during an AFD. Mrfoogles (talk) 21:55, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Very weak keep only if the name is changed to "...football team" rather than "...national football team—It feels absurd to vote in favor of something this fluid, semi-official, and undefinable. We can't even figure out what to call it, much less exactly what it is. This is clearly not a national team, because Esperanto is a language, not a nation. It's also not a sub-nationality, ethnic identity, tribal affiliation, or diasporic community. I want to vote "Delete" so badly, but the sources are there to establish WP:SIGCOV, unfortunately. That said, this is a ridiculous article on a ridiculous subject that shouldn't really exist. But standards are standards, and this article meets those standards. Anwegmann (talk) 01:37, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - this article has been shown to meet GNG which no editor has refuted so should be kept. As it stands, there are one delete vote, one merge vote, and four keep votes. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 05:35, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit unsure about this one, as he seemed to have a rather robust career, but it was entirely at the non-league, semi-pro level. There doesn't seem to be much of any WP:SIGCOV outside of this local newspaper coverage. I'd like to see what consensus is here, as it feels like a "delete" for me, but I'm curious what others think. • Seems to have been pretty prominent; though searching isn't helped by the fact that the same team had another prominent Harry Dunn at the same time... There's an interview here, and while an interview, it does note that "Harry became a legendary player for Scarborough Football Club. ... Harry Dunn, in what was a 22 year period from 1965 to 1986 you played over 900 games for Scarborough FC, you scored many goals and created many more. You had well over twice the number of appearances of any player in the Club’s history and well over three times the number of appearances by any local player. You have been described as: -the ever present Harry Dunn -competent, reliable and dependable -a calm presence on the field -a gentleman on and off the field – everything that was needed for a team captain to lead Scarborough Football Club to the success it enjoyed and particularly to those Wembley victories." Also some briefish pieces on him: [45] [46] [47] [48]. Kind of expected more... BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:06, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep The three sources in the article and the interview linked by BeanieFan are enough, in my opinion, to meet the GNG. Add to this an excellent claim to notability, far beyond what I'd expect for a run-of-the-mill football player stub that gets taken to AfD. I don't have access to British Newspaper Archive, but those links at least show there's some "offline" coverage, as would be expected. Toadspike [Talk] 09:03, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
