Year of Return

The Year of Return,Ghana 2019 was formally launched by the President of the republic of Ghana on September 2019 in Washington, D.C. for Africans in the diaspora, to unite Africans with their brothers and sisters in the diaspora.It is a symbolic year to commemorate 400 years [1]since the enslaved Africans touched down in Jamestown,Virginia in the in the united States[2] and also, diaspora's achievements and sacrifices.[3]

The Ghana Tourism Authority, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, have year marked calendar of activities in “celebration of the resilience of the African spirit”.[4]


Objectives

  • To make Ghana a key travel destination for African Americans and the African Diaspora.
  • This is in supports of one of the key developmental agendas in Ghana Beyond Aid adenga
  • To rebuild the lost the past over 400 years
  • To boost tourism in Ghana and foster relationships with Africa Americans and African Diaspora.


Visitors

Jackson Lee linked the initiative with the 400 Years of African-American History Commission Act that was passed in congress 2017.[2]

American actor and Director Michael Jai White visited Ghana towards the end of 2018.Over 40 African diasporans participated in the "The Full Circle Festival",which aimed to attract visitors to Ghana.The list includes, but not limited to,Idris Elba,Boris Kodjo,Naomi Campbell,Anthony Anderson,Kofi Kingston[5][6],Andriene-Joi Johnson and Steve Harvey.[7]

The Akwamuhene Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, the Akwamu Paramount Chief, enstooled White as Chief "Oduapong" meaning "Tree with strong roots that does not fear the storm" during the visit[8]
