Summary
Description7402 Gtown Cresheim Cottage.JPG |
English: 7402-7404 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA, part of the Colonial Germantown Historic District expansion. Known as Cresheim Cottage, now houses a restaurant. A Plaque on the SE corner of the building states "built in 1700 by the Palatine German Settlers from the Rhine Valley. The first house on the great road, Germantown Ave. in the Cresheim Valley. The land was secured from William Penn in 1683. William Penn Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists 1976."
The NRHP inventory is much less specific, stating that it was built before 1804 by Garret Rittenhouse. It is a 2 story, 4 - rank, stone dwelling with a center door opening to an enclosed portico with wood sills and cornice. The windows are 6/9 double hung on the 1st floor; 6/6 double hung on the 2nd floor. A 1.5 story wing extends south. Additions were made in 1933. The inventory considers the building Significan. Perhaps the difference in dates in the 2 sources is due to the 1.5 story building; but the inventory looks more authoritative to me. |
