According to this plaque 710 Main Street was one end of the first two-way long distance telephone conversation, which extended across three hours on October 9, 1876. Thomas G. Watson was at this location, and spoke to Alexander Graham Bell at 69 Kilby Street, Boston, Massachusetts. This building had previously been the Davenport Car Manufactory, pioneering manufacturer of railroad cars, as noted in another plaque on the facade. |
