PNG represents gradients perfectly; it is, after all, a lossless compression scheme. What you probably mean is that PNG doesn't compress gradients very well, and that's true. However, JPEG doesn't represent the solid red top half of this logo well at all; on an LCD, ugly splotches in the red area are very visible. A PNG version would not have this problem. Image compression for an image this size really isn't that big of a concern, although I wouldn't be surprised if PNG was able to produce a smaller file size despite the gradient. —Bkell (talk) 05:36, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
