[edit]- 1839 – Bristol and Exeter Railway adopts 7 ft (2,134 mm) for its track gauge.
- 1872 – George Westinghouse receives a patent for the Westinghouse air brake.
20th century
[edit]- 1956 – The last steam locomotive purchased new by Southern Pacific Railroad, cab forward class AC-12 4-8-8-2 number 4294, is retired from revenue service.[1]
21st century
[edit]- 2009 – The Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge is officially opened to rail traffic.[2]
- 2011 – E5 Series Shinkansen trainsets are first introduced on the new Hayabusa services between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori, Japan, initially operating at a maximum speed of 300 km/h (190 mph).
