Ivan Wayman (born September 28, 1989) is an American musician, recording engineer and producer best known for his work with Warpaint, Julian Casablancas and The Voidz, Adele, The War on Drugs, and The Killers.[1]
Early Life
[edit]Born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, Wayman took to music early in his life. He started playing the drums at age 5 and spent most of his childhood and teenage years playing in bands and producing tracks with his friends under various project monikers. In 2009, after High School and a brief stint working construction in New Orleans, Louisiana, Wayman moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.
Career
[edit]Assistant Engineering & Janet Jackson
[edit]Early in His Career, Wayman was hired as an assistant engineer at Redstar Recording in Silverlake, California. His first assignment was assisting on writing/vocal sessions for the Janet Jackson album Unbreakable (Janet Jackson album). During his time at Redstar he would work with many different artists and producers like 'Mike Ness and Social Distortion, Rancid (band), The Avila Brothers, David Hidalgo, among others.
VS Colour
[edit]In 2016 Wayman joined Los Angeles rock band VS Colour as their drummer. He would go on to engineer and produce an EP with the band, '9-9-D9', in 2016, and a full length LP, 'Entitled', in 2019. In 2020, VS Colour was booked as an official artist at Sxsw before the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.[2]
Dave Jerden
[edit]While Engineering on a session in 2013, Wayman met Producer Dave Jerden. They quickly developed a working relationship, and worked on a number of projects together over the next six years including an album for LA punk band 'The Shrine'.
TT and LoveLaws
[edit]In 2016, Ivan was enlisted by his sister Theresa Wayman to help produce a solo album of her own songs and productions. The result was LoveLaws, "a resounding and devastating collection of songs about motherhood, loneliness and romance in an unromantic age"[3], according to Tristan Gatward of Loud and Quiet. Ivan Wayman co-produced 7 of the 9 tracks and co-wrote 2. The album received generally postive reviews from critics.
Shawn Everett
[edit]While working on the Warpaint (band) album Heads Up (Warpaint album), Wayman met mix engineer/producer Shawn Everett, and began working as his engineer. Over the coming years to present day they would work together on many acclaimed records by artists like The Killers, The War On Drugs (band), Local Natives, and Adele, among others.
Julian Casablancas+The Voidz
[edit]Ivan's latest work has been as producer with the American Rock Band The Voidz, fronted by Julian Casablancas. They worked closely together to produce a song and other content for Grand Theft Auto V in 2020, and are currently working on an album for the band.
Awards and nominations
[edit]In December 2020, Wayman was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical category for his work on Devon Gilfillian's Black Hole Rainbow[4]
