New avenues in car design were being pursued in the late Nineties and early Naughties with models such as the Smart (also see Smart Roadster and Smart Forfour), "revival" models such as the Chrysler PT Cruiser and New Mini. One particular design lineage seems to span the Audi TT, New Beetle and Mazda RX-8.
