Fair use image resolution

[edit]

Please note that copyrighted images uploaded and used under a claim of fair use must be of a suitably low resolution that the content can be made out without permitting duplication. For album and single covers the generally accepted size is 300px. Please reduce any images you upload to this size to save other editors the work of tagging them and resizing them after the fact. Thanks. Mfield (Oi!) 06:31, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

On fair use and living persons

[edit]

Please also note that fair use policy does not permit uploading of images of living persons - as a free use image could conceivably be taken. An exception to this would be characters in costume but the image would need to be highly illustrative of something discussed in the article, such that the article could not stand without the image, and text alone could not suffice to describe what is pictured. Also there has to be no free use alternative available to illustrate the same point. The bar is high on these matters, but without ensuring adequate rationales we would simply be violating other parties copyright, something we take very seriously as Wikipedia. Replaceable fair use Image:DOLCast.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:DOLCast.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 12:52, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Fred1.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Fred1.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 12:53, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:Freddie.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Freddie.gif. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 12:54, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:IWantyouMadonnaMassiv.jpg

[edit]
File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:IWantyouMadonnaMassiv.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:25, 8 July 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 13:25, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Madonna la isla bonita.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:VirginTour985.jpg.

Thank you. Stifle (talk) 13:38, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:DTMPromo.jpg

Apologies

[edit]

Sorry for leaving so many duplicate messages. Unfortunately I'm caught for time so had to stick to the automatic script.

However, you may wish to read over the image use policy before uploading any more images. Non-free images mustn't be uploaded unless they meet all criteria at WP:NFCC, which includes writing out a rationale on the image description page explaining how each one is met. Stifle (talk) 13:44, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your message, the above messages describe why your image uploads weren't appropriate or are missing information. If other similar images haven't been tagged, that's only because I haven't got around to it yet. Stifle (talk) 18:46, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't send me non-confidential messages by email. Use my talk page instead.
The messages above are in one of five categories:
  1. "Replaceable fair use" This means you've uploaded an image that's copyrighted, but what's shown in the image could be covered by a free image that exists or could be created. Usually, this is because it's an image of a living person or living people; these aren't permitted.
  2. "Orphaned non-free image" This means you've uploaded an image that's copyrighted and say it's being used under our non-free content criteria. One of those criteria requires that non-free images must be used in at least one article, and those images aren't in any article. You should add them to one.
  3. "Fair use rationale for..." This means you've uploaded an image that's copyrighted and say it's being used under the non-free content criteria, but haven't added an explanation of why the image meets the criteria. You need to add one. See WP:NFURG.
  4. "Disputed non-free use rationale" This means you've uploaded an image that's copyrighted and say it's being used under the non-free content criteria, but there is some other issue with the image. You will have to go to the image description page to read the exact issue.
  5. "File source problem" This means that you haven't provided details of where you found the image. You need to provide a web page or other location where the image can be found.
I hope this clarifies the issue for you. However, you must stop uploading images until you have resolved the issues with the existing ones and understand the image use policy. Stifle (talk) 17:33, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop sending me non-confidential messages by email. I find that it is contrary to the open communication I prefer. Further non-confidential messages by email will not receive a reply.
All the details regarding each image are clearly set out above. If you have any specific questions about a specific message, please specify which one. Stifle (talk) 20:44, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Blonde Ambition Tour .jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Madonn-bedtim 02.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Madonn-bedtim 02.jpg.

Thank you. Stifle (talk) 20:46, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Madonna22.jpg listed for deletion

[edit]

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, File:Madonna22.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 22:00, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your email (you really should use talk pages; it's quicker and more transparent) no, they should not be deleted. They are free images. There is a difference between free content and non-free content. The use of non-free content must be in-line with our non-free content criteria. J Milburn (talk) 22:09, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again, please use my talk page to contact me. These non-free images should probably not be used anywhere- the free ones you can use where ever you like. J Milburn (talk) 22:18, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just as I have created a new section here? The use of ==Title==? I have seen Stifle's message above, and, by rights, I should be blocking you now, but it seems as if you are willing to discuss this issue and learn. Please, please be more careful about the use of non-free content in the future- if necessary, contact me on my talk page, and I will help you judge whether an image should be used. I will be watching your uploads, and definitely blocking if you continue. J Milburn (talk) 22:26, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, as that would add nothing to the article. Please read the non-free content criteria, specifically, point 8. As you have both me and Stifle watching your uploads, and you clearly don't "get" non-free content, I advise you are extremely careful about your uploads now. J Milburn (talk) 22:33, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you feel it would add to the article? J Milburn (talk) 22:36, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, "visual feel" doesn't really count for anything, I'm afraid. Again, I must point you to our non-free content guidelines and, specifically, our non-free content criteria. Thank you for being cooperative here, and please be more careful in future. J Milburn (talk) 22:40, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would be fine. Feel free to contact me on my talk page- hopefully that will allow us to avoid the need for deletions and blocks. J Milburn (talk) 22:42, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As the appearance of the music video is discussed (with discussion of the tinting/colouring) this image is probably legitimate. I have modified the rationale a little. J Milburn (talk) 23:20, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, that was is not required. There is already an album cover, and this new one is not discussed in the article, and is not particularly important. It should be removed. J Milburn (talk) 01:55, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I've deleted the file. J Milburn (talk) 01:59, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nope; again, there is already the main album cover, and this one is not particularly important, so it shouldn't be used. J Milburn (talk) 02:05, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The cover of the DVD is not important. If the DVD was notable enough to warrant its own article, then it would be a useful addition. However, at the moment, I would not bother with it. J Milburn (talk) 11:37, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A single image would be useful in the infobox to identify the tour itself- I guess it's up to editors of the article to decide whether it is this one or the one there already. Personally, I'd go for the poster, but either would probably work. However, if we already have an identifying image in the infobox, I can't see why the other would be needed. J Milburn (talk) 16:44, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What I'm saying is that you should not use File:Blond Ambition.png and Image:Blond Poster.jpg- one of them should be used in the infobox, the other should not be used. It's up to you/the other editors to decide which is which. Understand? J Milburn (talk) 16:50, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that one looks fine. J Milburn (talk) 00:15, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The other's probably fine as an infobox image as well. J Milburn (talk) 00:20, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey!

Stop changing the image at the Virgin Tour. Alecsdaniel (talk) 11:10, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No it's not. Anyway, you can't put just what image you want, if there is already one. Alecsdaniel (talk) 18:40, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

C'mon man! We're botj actin like immature Brats lets just use mine, your has been up there for a really long time. Its time for a change.

Pff..No need for a change. You just want an image by you to be used. Just, stop reverting, mine was there first plus she looks better on my image. Alecsdaniel (talk) 18:52, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Madonna22.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Madonna22.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 20:24, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on The Virgin Tour. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. J Milburn (talk) 18:57, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please see my comments at Talk:The Virgin Tour#Page protected. Please take discussion to the article talk page. I am contactable on my own talk page if you have any questions. J Milburn (talk) 19:01, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that's fine, don't worry about it. Probably best to continue to the discussion on the article talk page- I'm not going to make a judgement about which image is better; you'll have to discuss that with the other editor. J Milburn (talk) 19:15, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually this time I have to agree with you. However, his image nees to have a proper rationale and a strong use as to why a non-free image of a living person is being used in the article. --Legolas (talk2me) 03:38, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will give you an example. Go to the Hung Up page. Then compare the music video image there, with all the images that you have uploaded. What difference can you find? You will understand. Also please go through WP:NFCC to understand about image uploading further. --Legolas (talk2me) 13:14, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you need to understand it thoroughly, otherwise all your images will be disputed like above. And never lose your cool like User:Alecsdaniel is doing. Always have good faith in what you are doing. Be polite and you'll see how wonderfully things work out. Let those people who are rude, be rude, you just do your job. --Legolas (talk2me) 13:21, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I absolutely love it. However, I am afraid that a free image like the performance of Confessions Tour exists in the Wikimedia Commons, hence this image may be deleted. So remember boy (i'm not sure if you're boy or girl ,assuming) whenever a free image exists, a non-free image is of no use. --Legolas (talk2me) 13:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also hey could you check out the virgin tour image I made some editing to it, I juss wanna c if thats what you mean and if thats right.

An orphaned image is one not used in any articles. You can deorphan an image by placing it in an article. However, do not place an image in an article where its use would not meet the non-free content criteria. Also, please only use email for private matters- you can reach me on my talk page for these kind of questions. J Milburn (talk) 22:57, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop edit warring on this page. You keep adding in that this 2001 tour supported Madonna's Bedtime Stories album from 1994. This is unrealistic, is completely your opinion and not a fact. Any further disruptions will lead to you being reported and possibly blocked. Please take this on board. JWAD talk 19:54, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The image still needs to address the issue of replaceability. --Legolas (talk2me) 03:29, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. Please comment here. Also would you be interested in joining the Madonna wikiproject? Another thing, please donot change the Drowned World Tour article as stated above. Alecs and Jwad are right, the tour didnot support Bedtime Stories. --Legolas (talk2me) 12:06, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because a non-free image is not allowed when a free image is available. And please stop adding non-free images to the tour articles. You did the same in Re-Invention Tour and Sticky & Sweet Tour. You have been told before to stop this. --Legolas (talk2me) 03:42, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Madonn-bedtim 02.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Madonn-bedtim 02.jpg.

Thank you. — Σxplicit 04:06, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, his edits seem sound. The cover is not discussed in the article, and is not even that different from the original- what do you feel it is adding to the article? I would like to say that your edit warring to keep it in the article was not appropriate- instead, you should have raised the matter with the editor in question. J Milburn (talk) 22:48, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because nobody thought to remove it before? The fact something has existed for a while doesn't mean that it is legitimate. Wikipedia is a work in progress- it is not perfect. J Milburn (talk) 22:52, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see why it does. Books are routinely published with numerous covers- we don't need to show all of them. Wikipedia uses non-free content as an absolute last restort. J Milburn (talk) 22:56, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've just seen this image- clearly in violation of our non-free content criteria. You have been heavily warned in the past about abuse of non-free content, and I have fought your corner, requesting that you are not blocked because of what you have said to me. This is the last warning I am going to give- if you upload any more non-free content that is clearly not required, I will block you from editing. I advise you steer clear of non-free content issues from now on, as you are clearly struggling to understand our policies. J Milburn (talk) 23:01, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Holidayliveperformances.jpg

[edit]
File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Holidayliveperformances.jpg.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 08:06, 27 August 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 08:06, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

[edit]

You've already had final warnings from me and J Milburn; I have now blocked you for 24 hours for persisting in uploading images which violate copyright and/or the image use policy. I'm not sure what more we can say to you about this, but I'll try once more to go through the main points that will keep you from being blocked again, possibly indefinitely.

  • Do not upload images that are copyrighted.
  • Do not upload images where you do not know, or are not willing to specify, exactly where the image came from.

If you wish to upload an image and you are not 100% certain that it is a free image and usable on Wikipedia, ask first (i.e. before you upload it). You can ask me, or any of the users who have left you a message here, by leaving a message on our talk pages. You can also ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

We are doing our absolute best to help you here and we appreciate your non-image contributions, but you simply must understand that you can't upload images without a care. We have strict policies and ignoring them will not get you very far. Stifle (talk) 08:16, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Myantoniocast.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Myantoniocast.jpg.

Thank you. Stifle (talk) 09:05, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

[edit]

Despite previous requests and warnings from me and other users, you have continued to upload copyrighted images in violation of WP:IUP and WP:NFCC. Indeed, you uploaded two images (the Rock of Love and Flavor of Love cast photos) that have been deleted before, so you must have known they were not appropriate. As a result, I have no option other than to block you for 3 days to prevent further violations of policy.

When your block expires, please make sure you do not upload a copyrighted image of something that already has an image. If you think your image is materially better, propose it on the talk page of the article first.

If you continue to upload inappropriate images, the next block may be indefinite. Stifle (talk) 09:11, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploads

[edit]

Please stop uploading images that do not meet out WP:NFCC policy. Images should not be uploaded merely for decorative purposes, which many of your images seem to be. Please aware that non-free images should be used for identification purposes if free alternatives don't exist and cannot be created or if they increase the readers' understanding when text alone cannot. The images you upload seem to be for these purposes, but fall short of the criteria. Be aware that that after blocks over this same concern may lead you into an indefinite block. Look over the aforementioned policy and please refrain from uploading such images. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reply to this message or contact me on my talk page. — ξxplicit 16:09, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked indefinitely

[edit]

You have had every possible warning and last chance concerning your use of non-free images, but have continued to upload them without regad to policy. Therefore, you are blocked indefinitely from editing.

You can contest this block by editing this page to add {{unblock|reason you should be unblocked}}. However, the unblock request is unlikely to be considered unless you provide a compelling reason, explaining why you have chosen to ignore all the many repeated requests to comply with image use policy and the steps you have taken to inform yourself of that policy, and providing an undertaking to comply with it in the future. Sockpuppet investigation

[edit]

Hi. An editor has opened an investigation into sockpuppetry by you. Sockpuppetry is the use of more than one Wikipedia account in a manner that contravenes community policy. The investigation is being held at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ElPilotoDi, where the editor who opened the investigation has presented their evidence. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with the guide to responding to investigations, and then feel free to offer your own evidence or to submit comments that you wish to be considered by the Wikipedia administrator who decides the result of the investigation. If you have been using multiple accounts (in a manner contrary to Wikipedia policy), please go to the investigation page and verify that now. Leniency is usually shown to those who promise not to do so again, or who did so unwittingly, but the abuse of multiple accounts is taken very seriously by the Wikipedia community.
