Please do not look at either of my articles at this time. I am in the process of collecting information from the artist Dale Enochs for my "Table of Contents" sculpture article. The article regarding "Glory" is nearly complete, but I am still having trouble uploading images, I hope to have them both finished soon.

Collections Management Systems Analysis

[edit]

I began this assignment by choosing three Wikipedia articles on subjects in which I have an extensive amount of knowledge. I then began to choose certain aspects of each article that I found useful and disappointing. The trend seems to be, the more popular the subject, the better orgainzed the article. I then used the Smithsonian Institution public database, SIRIS to look up random sculpture. I feel the system is really great as it gives almost any information about outdoor sculpture that you could ever hope to find. The only problem that I encountered was the lack of photographs. I realize that at the time of the SOS project digital cameras were non-existant, but the Smithsonian could provide a link to a picture that is currently online now. The SOS project of Indiana infofmation was surprisingly good. I found it comparable to SIRIS in a good way.

The first article I chose to research was a musician by the name of Tori Amos. I am huge fan and know quite a bit about her and her music. Her article would fall under the living musician category. I was really surprised and shocked to find that so much of the information was missing and unorganized. I was surprised because as a fan I know her fanbase can be very loyal, but also very rabid when it comes to information presented on the internet and various medias. For me the article was unorganized because it of the way it listed her career by labels or records companies. This was confusing as well as boring. The author never explained what a struggle it was for Tori Amos to remain with a record label which had her best interests at heart. I think after this project is over I might be editing that article.

The second article I chose was on Ancient Greece. I chose this article because my major is Classical Archaeology and I felt I could decipher right and wrong information. This article would fall under the category of history. This article was very organized and I liked how the information was presented. The author or authors give a summary and then start from a date that is considered the start of Ancient Greece and then continue from there. I like how the article is then broken up into sections concerning education, philosophy and art, which were three main accomplishments of the Ancient Greeks. I feel this article would be a good reference for our outdoor sculpture projects. I also found that the "Main articles" listed underneath these sections gave links to other Wikipedia articles which I think would be very useful for our project. For instance under Religion and Mythology the main articles listed were Ancient Greek Religion Hellenistic Religion and Greek Mythology. This would be an efficent way to communicate without make our articles tremendously long.

The third article discusses Anne Boleyn. She would fall under the historical figure category. I chose Anne Boleyn because I have read many books about her and Elizabeth I. I like how the article is written, it gives a summary and then breaks down a timeline leading up to her death and then even a section of myth and legends. For almost every name that is unfamiliar there is an internal link. I really feel that this is an advantage to us concerning the project. If there are credible Wikipedia pages that coincide with our work, then I think it would be useful to link everything we can. But I feel we should make sure these articles are correct because we do not want to link false information which can be seen as unreliable in the future.

As I mentioned previously, I found that SIRIS seemed to be a good collection management system. I put in many objects and even types of objects and it would pull it right up with all the known information listed. I would like to see our Wikipedia articles have as much information about our outdoor sculpture as SIRIS does, but maybe go a step further. SIRIS does not list the condition in which these sculptures are in, even on some of the SOS project peices. It is my feeling that we should consider doing a condition report, not a large detailed report, but something that says how the sculpture looks compared to what it did when it was first created. I also feel we should try to find a picture of the sculpture when it was dedicated or made and then a picture of what it looks like today. I do like how SIRIS has organized the information regarding the sculpture, maybe we could use this as a model for our contents boxes.

The Indiana SOS project seems good in terms of photographs and information given about Indiana sculpture. I liked the fact that you could click on the title and it would pull up a large image and most of the time a good amount of information on the subject. It was not as advanced as SIRIS, but it was not as bad as I expected. The system gives links to other intrests such as art deco. I like the way the information is layed out on the page where details are given. I think we could combine SIRIS and the Indiana Historical Society's set up by providing large pictures as well as links to other art and artists with the same connection.

We have at our disposal so many resources such as the SOS project, SIRIS, our own observations and online sources that I feel that we should combine the best of these resources to come up with a great template of our own. I believe to have a successful article we should have a description, which includes detail and dementions. We should also have a condition report along with photographs that coincide with these reports. I also think we should list the histoty, if any and possible story that will interest those who read our articles. With the help of these resources I am sure we will have the best articles about outdoor sculpture on Wikipedia.

File source problem with File:Glory Front.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Glory Front.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:49, 28 November 2009 (UTC). Survey

[edit]

Hi Eris1999!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Wikipedia! Thank you! SarahStierch (talk) 05:01, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
