Dear Fellow editor, Please translate the article into German about the MDDF. Thank you in advance. Geraldshields11 (talk) 23:33, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Geraldshields11: Hi. At this time I am only confident enough in my foreign language skills to translate from German to English; not the other way around. When translating from German to English I can say "hang on, that doesn't sound quite right" if I've made a mistake, and then go back and fix it, but without the native speaking proficiency I have with English, I can't look at something I've translated into German and be sure I've done it correctly without an actual German to double check for me. If you have a German article you'd like translated into English, that's a totally different story. I do apologize and if I can find someone who is capable of doing that, I will pass that request on to them. Et0048 (talk) 07:31, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Et0048:, Thank you for your candor. Can you make a stub with a link to the English article so a native German speaker can do the translation? Geraldshields11 (talk) 12:18, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alabama Civil Air Patrol

[edit]

Thanks for creating the page Alabama Wing Civil Air Patrol. Do you have access to the CAP's eServices site? If so, I'd like to invite you to update the statistics for this wing article and any others you have time for, and updating the source date. Etamni | ✉   06:49, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Etamni: Hi. Actually I don't have access to that information; in the case of Alabama I was able to find a fact sheet from the Alabama wing in 2012 that listed these statistics. I'd have cited it properly but it kept screwing up when I tried to put a citation within the template parameters so I didn't. I know that since it was the exact same publisher listing those figures and that's exactly verbatim what the website would have said, if I did have access to it, which I don't, I figured not using that data would be splitting hairs too much. Some of the other individual pages also have outdated info so I didn't think outdated info would be too big a problem when it was that or nothing; I'd be willing to bet as long as the work of getting the page created was done, we can get one of the regular editors of one of the updated pages to simply fix that one little part of it. Et0048 (talk) 07:31, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I keep trying to find someone to do that. We have 18 wing articles now, and very few editors maintaining them. I have watches on all of them plus the 34 that don't exist yet, but since I am not a member, I cannot access eServices. arrg! You are correct that 2012 figures are better than no figures, but I hope we can get them updated soon.
Also, after you created the page, I thought I'd add a fix the link to the wing's official web page. Couldn't find one via Google. It might be out there, but since CAP HQ is in the same state, any Google search I tried kept giving me links for every CAP site that mentions that state -- which is most of them.
If you are interested in the CAP specifically, you might check out Draft:New Hampshire Wing Civil Air Patrol -- another editor created it. I've done a little work on it, but I feel it needs more. I could just move it to main space, but would like to see what AFC will do with it once it's more complete.Etamni | ✉   07:38, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating New Jersey State Guard for DYK

[edit]

I saw you recently created article for the New Jersey State Guard. It appears to be an excellent candidate for inclusion as part of Wikipedia:Did you know, where it would appear in the "Did You Know" section on the main page. If you are familiar / comfortable with the nomination process at T:TDYK I encourage you to nominate the article for inclusion. If not, I will be happy to do so on your behalf and create a model that you can use for other current and new eligible articles. Please ping me and let me now either way. Thanks again for creating the article. Alansohn (talk) 12:15, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Alansohn: I confess that I am completely unfamiliar with the nomination process, so if it is something that you are more familiar with, I would happily accept your offer of having you do it on my behalf and creating a model for future use. I'm very happy to know someone thought the article worthy of nomination. Thank you for your kind offer. Et0048 (talk) 19:44, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please look at Template:Did you know nominations/New Jersey State Guard for the details of the nomination of your article and look at T:TDYK for an overall description of the process. Feel free to try it yourself and to ask for help, if needed. I will monitor the nomination until it's approved. Alansohn (talk) 21:16, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Et0048, in case you hadn't been monitoring the nomination yourself, the issue raised in the late-December review has still not been addressed and needs to be. At this point, I think you only have a few days left to start working on the issue. Alansohn, we really need to hear from one of you very soon if you wish to continue pursuing this DYK nomination. Thank you both. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:37, 17 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nebraska Wing Civil Air Patrol

[edit]

The problem is: You didn't upload a logo. You uploaded a photograph of a patch that someone made out of a logo. That's why I deleted it. You didn't include any information on where the photograph came from (who took it, who has the copyright on the logo and patch, etc.) So you've written a fair-use rationale for the logo but that's not what you uploaded. Please adjust the fair use rationale to include details about the attribution and copyright status of the photo, or it will be deleted again. The URL where you grabbed the photo is not sufficient. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 18:07, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help verify translations of articles from German

[edit]

Hello Et0048,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from German to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original German article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including German , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from German. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

  1. Leithen Valley
  2. Maite Beaumont

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the German article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.

If you can help, please {{ping}} me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 06:57, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article Los Angeles Police Department Cadet Program has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

a local program, fails WP:ORG, and not enough detail to cover independently. Useful encyclopedic content can and should be covered in LAPD's article. Unneeded content fork

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Texas Light Foot Militia

[edit]

Et0048,

Your removal of facts and your comment that my input was "less than neutral and has been removed." is unfounded. First, please reference LFMS2014. The Texas Light Foot Militia was modeled after the Idaho Light Foot Militia and as such are a non-private, non-paramilitary organization. You may also reference the mission statement on that same document...which you also removed from the wiki page.

Furthermore, I also don't see how an establishment date in the notes section of the wiki table under the organization section was considered "less than neutral". Yet again you removed the mission of the organization as stated in the LFMS2014...

All of the information I posted and changed was correct and had no weight either side of neutral. I was simply adding correct information to the page, and I hoped to continue to do so. The Light Foot Militia is nothing more than men and women in a community becoming trained and organized to take care of one another and to become a well organized militia to the service of our community, state, and nation.

very respectfully, cmcelvain — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cmcelvain (talkcontribs) 23:43, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of militia

[edit]

This is the definition of militia as taken from the Wikipedia article. "A militia /mɪˈlɪʃə/[1] is generally an army or some other fighting organization of non-professional soldiers, citizens of a nation, or subjects of a state, who can be called upon for military service during a time of need". Those groups are not armed and do not fight. You wouldn't consider the Salvation Army an actual army, why do you consider these militias? Look at all the other groups on the list. They are armed groups. The Proud Boys doesn't consider themselves a militia anywhere on their website and the Republic of Florida is made up of ex cons who are legally not allowed to own firearms and whom also deny owning firearms. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.68.172.20 (talk) 10:32, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are multiple definitions of the word "militia." Merriam-Webster defines it as "a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency." Dictionary.com defines it as "a body of citizens organized in a paramilitary group and typically regarding themselves as defenders of individual rights against the presumed interference of the federal government." United States code defines it as "all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard." There are many definitions of militia; there is no consensus that a group has to be armed to be considered a militia. For example, the state defense forces of the United States are recognized as militias under state law despite the fact that most of them are not allowed to carry weapons on duty. Et0048 (talk) 15:53, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay so even in its lowest form "paramilitary" still means an armed group. Neither of those groups are armed. Dude you're not getting the point here are you? A militia is a FIGHTING group, that is the lowest common denominator. You can't get around this. Just because you can't carry a weapon during peace time doesn't mean anything. Touch that article again and I'll be reporting you for vandalism. You've lost.

"Common name" copout

[edit]

Hello. I felt compelled, because this is the line constantly used (actually mis-used) to defend this mythical and nonsensical and counter-factual discredited term "Spanish Flu". I support the change for accuracy's sake, having ZERO to do with the current Chinese Flu. (Yes, I called it that.)

I support the change per d:Q178275#sitelinks-wikipedia where many other languages do not use this provably inaccurate discredited and arguably obsolete term. It's not because of "China Virus" either (which is actually accurate too, since China is unquestionably provably the origin of this latest coronavirus).

If Spain was in fact the true and actual origin and maker of this 1918 flu virus, then I'd have no qualms at all in retaining the name "Spanish Flu". It would be accurate. But Spain was not the origin of it. Nor Spaniards. That's not even debatable. So why perpetuate the myth?

The problem with the "common name" argument that so many give as their excuse for keeping a mythical term is that it puts tradition over truth, feelings over facts, myths over merits, and also it's not "common" at all in many other parts of the world, and even today many American and British historians use "1918 flu" instead. Thanks for uploading File:California Cadet Corps logo.png. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or provided a license tag. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.
