My username relates to my interests:
"Big Blue" - Aircraft, the RAF
Crayfish - small freshwater lobsters, of which the Blue ones are most prized
Kray Twins - British gangsters. And I was born a twin, in the UK
There is also a pun in there relating to computing -IBM (known as Big Blue) and Cray
But if I have to change it, so be it

Bird taxonomy

[edit]

Hi, I've noticed that you have been changing the genus of birds in Wikipedia articles such as the blue crane, the demoiselle crane and the bluethroat.

English Wikipedia uses the taxonomy and the common names of the IOC World Bird List as explained here.

There are other world checklists including BLI/IUCN, Clements, and Howard & Moore 4. A project has been established to create a single taxonomy for world birds by the "Working Group Avian Checklists" – you can read about it here. It uses the IOC list as a starting point. - Aa77zz (talk) 09:16, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I did not realise. I did check the Talk pages, but did not see anything regarding wp:consensus. I did notice that Anthropoides had been wp:BLAR with the note Change to a redirect to Grus - wikipedia follows IOC classification but no explanation of why, who decided this, etc. So I thought [citation needed] and wp:BeBold Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 11:21, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has used the taxonomy of the IOC for a long time. In 2017 this was confirmed by a vote of the bird editors who were active at that time - see the archive here. By following a single authority we can keep article consistent - species, genera, families etc. The BirdLife International (BLI) taxonomy used by the IUCN (see here) lags the IOC and Clements - probably because BLI lack the resources to keep up to date with all the changes. For example the classification of the hummingbirds was reorganised based on a big study published 2014 (see the tribe Trochilini - 11 genera resurrected etc) - but BLI haven't yet implemented these changes. - Aa77zz (talk) 12:13, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Taxonbar placement

[edit]

Taxonbars should not be placed above an External links section, as you had done at mayhaw, nor above a navbox as you had at Pildra. Taxonbars go at the end of the page. The only things that should come after them are {{Authority control}} (if present), categories and stub-sorting templates (if present). Plantdrew (talk) 17:28, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox

[edit]

Please note that user sandbox pages, such as your User:Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins/sandbox, are not allowed to be filed in mainspace categories as if they were already finished articles. The page must stay out of categories while it's in sandbox, and categories are to be added only if and when the content is actually being moved into a real article. Since I've already had to remove the page from categories three times in the space of just one month, please also note that it is a thing you can be sanctioned for being disruptive if it continues, so please do not readd your sandbox page to categories again. Bearcat (talk) 13:47, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. And Thanks for deleting stuff from MY Sandbox. I'm sorry you had to do it three times, yet only warned me now. This crackdown probably explains why I have seen articles produced from Drafts with lots of <-- remarks all over them.
As you seem to be a Very Important Wikipedian, perhaps you can convince the higher-ups to simply filter Users Sandboxes out of Categories instead? So that we juniors can actually experiment with a FULL page preview in our private, testing areas ?? I'm sure that is not beyond the realms of standard coding? Your GA nomination of Nuptial tubercles

[edit]

The article Nuptial tubercles you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Nuptial tubercles and Talk:Nuptial tubercles/GA1 for issues which need to be addressed.
