Suggestions for possible new articles

[edit]

While we do disagree in some particulars, I don't want you to think I don't appreciate your value to Wikipedia, the Military History project in general, and the ACW task force in specific. With this in mind, I'd suggest two new pages in your "in the American Civil War" series: Cotton in the American Civil War and Immigrants in the American Civil War. I'm not sure I've captured the intent with the second title, perhaps "Immigration in the American Civil War" would be better, or even another title. It's just that so many non-native-born soldiers participated in the war and there are some notable leaders on both sides (Siegel and Cleburne to name two) which deserve an unified treatment. When thinking about your next new work, please consider the enormous usefulness of at least the first page. BusterD (talk) 14:19, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First, happy new year!

Chee kufta

[edit]

Hi, in your new article you use the spelling kufta for this dish. However, Armenian cuisine consistently uses the spelling kiufta (except for your addition of Chee kufta). Could you address the question of these variant spellings -- here or on my talk page? It is obviously desirable to have consistency. Thank you. --Zlerman (talk) 15:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Northwest Territory task force?

[edit]

Would you be interested in forming a task force for the Northwest Territory? I've never started one, but I thought we could form up under Wikipedia:WikiProject United States History. The reason I'm considering it is that many of the articles dealing with the NW Territory (or the daughter territories) are dealt with as individual state histories, and I think we could do better if we instead focused on the enormous Indian territory that the new United States inherited after the Revolution. Let me know what you think.Mingusboodle (talk) 17:59, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Under WP US History? Could work. I'd give it a go.--Gen. Bedford his Forest 18:07, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unless we get more than three guys, it's probably not worth creating a task force. I'll keep you in mind if it ever happens, though. Thanks. Mingusboodle (talk) 03:17, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Harmar Campaign

[edit]

Hey Bedford! If you should have a chance, could you take a look at Harmar Campaign. It could prolly use a Milhist assessment, and also could you comment on the proposed merge. I removed the latest comment from you about Sceptre over on AN.[1]

I don't care if you like Sceptre or not, but keep your comments productive. Snide little commentary? Not so much. EVula // talk // // 05:35, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say it was rather productive, as it illustrated a point worth considering.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 05:42, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do it without being a dick. The "Uhh, remember..." comment earlier in that thread, I thought, was perfectly fine. But the one I removed was just being a dick for the sake of being a dick. EVula // talk // // 05:46, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom declined to get involved - although selected quotes such as "Bedford's insistence on using crass language that he knows offends some of his fellow Wikipedians is churlish and reinforces why he is no longer an administrator" and "# Bedford is reminded that such extreme hyperbole reflects mostly on his own character, and that he would be well-advised to redact it himself. " are hardly support. No, I'm sorry to say that while the primary harm may or may not fall on your head with your bad behavior, its very much outside of the point of user space. All things on Wikipedia are a privilege - including the use of "your" userspace - a privilege you are abusing, as you has been pointed out to you repeatedly by many editors. Please stop.--Tznkai (talk) 05:54, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK copy edit

[edit]

General: I noticed an odd error of phrasing in one of the next DYK tags, but I can't figure out how to edit it (since it's in a template somewhere). It's the one informing us "... that sprint canoer Thomas Zereske's life was dedicated by his former teammate Christian Gille's gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the C-2 1000 m event?" "Dedicated by" should be "honored by" or "memorialized in," or something similar. I'm posting it on your talk since I know you often work on DYK. Thanks. --Amble (talk) 23:35, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Should be "... that Christian Gille dedicated his 2004 Summer Olympics gold medal to the life of his former teammate, sprint canoer Thomas Zereske?" You'd have to find an admin to change it since it's in the queue.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 23:41, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but it looks like someone avoided that phrasing in order to put Zereske's name first. Thanks. --Amble (talk) 23:49, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--Dravecky (talk) 01:03, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Bedford. - Thank you for your comments on the article. I want to explain some of my reasoning, and hope to prod you into some more work.

1. I leave the citations in expanded form (that is, repeat the titles, etc.) as something of a convenience for later editors. If someone decides to eliminate, or move, the first citation of a book, he then does not have to revise other citations. I know it is a rather remote likelihood, but it is no inconvenience to me, as I cut and paste from my bibliography.
2. I have not requested peer review for higher status because I do not think it should pass. The text is not stable - I have made sure of that myself. What I hope is that it can soon be put into more or less final form, and then we can settle down and anticipate the final judgment.

If you agree with my reasoning, perhaps you can see where I am leading: This article is probably close to FA quality, and needs only moderate effort to bring it back up there. I have done what I think I can do, and whatever else needs to be done must be done by others. I hope that you are one of those others. - PKKloeppel (talk) 14:59, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Corned beef sandwich

[edit]

Hi. I explained my deletion in corned beef sandwich. It's a digression, as discussed in WP:COATRACK, from the topic of the article that sheds no light on the topic. As such, it warrants deletion. You restored the text without explanation. I'd like to remove it again but I wondered what your rationale was for restoring it. —Largo Plazo (talk) 02:21, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1) It isn't a coatrack; 2) we had engaged in lenghty debate about it a few months ago, and the result was it was kept, 3) It is the famous moment for that particular dish, and therefore deserved to be mentioned there. Therefore, it stays.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 02:26, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
1) It is a coatrack by the very definition of coatrack. Can you tell one thing that one can learn about corned beef sandwiches from reading that story? 2) The discussion was about deleting the article. 3) It wasn't a famous moment about corned beef sandwiches. It was a possibly famous story that happened to involve a corned beef sandwich. There was nothing about the fact that it was a corned beef sandwich, as opposed to a tuna sandwich or a corned beef empanada or a chocolate eclair, that made any difference in the way the story played out. The bottom line is that three quarters of an article that purports to be about corned beef sandwiches is actually about astronauts misbehaving on a space flight. Doesn't that seem odd? —Largo Plazo (talk) 02:46, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What needs to happen is adding to the article. It didn't get done before during its AFD, but now should get done. Tomorrow I'll fill it out so that less than 50% of the article is about Gus.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 02:49, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I mentioned how it's the better part of the article to emphasize my point, but it will still be a coatrack, especially given the amount of detail that was put into explaining the incident. —Largo Plazo (talk) 03:07, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indiana in the War of 1812

[edit]

You seem to be off to a very strong start on Indiana in the War of 1812. I'll give it a better look, later, when I'm not on company time. Thanks for the review of Spur's Defeat, by the way. If you'd like another interesting contribution for DYK, I recently found and added something that was too good to pass up:

Did you know that the Siege of Fort Wayne began on 5 September 1812 when Chief Winamac's warriors attacked two soldiers returning from an outhouse? Mingusboodle (talk) 17:13, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, since we're talking about 1812 articles... can you tell me why the {Indiana history} template defaults to an expanded view in some articles (like Kekionga) but is collapsed in others (like Siege of Fort Wayne)? I prefer the collapsed view, but I can't figure out how to change it. Mingusboodle (talk) 17:28, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Indina history template was Charles; I've done nothing on it. The Siege of Fort Wayne hasn't been expanded enough.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 18:48, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working on it. I had added a big section during my lunch break, today, and didn't think to copy my text before clicking "Save." Wouldn't you know it? Wikipedia had a hiccup, and my hour was wasted. Is there anything more frustrating? But anyway... yeah, I'll keep working on it. Mingusboodle (talk) 23:26, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NRHP in Louisville

Are you planning to split out any more cities besides Anchorage? I ask because I really don't feel like renumbering the sites still on the county list if it will need to be done again soon :-) Nyttend (talk) 14:47, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'll be splitting more off soon. (I'm trying to get breakfast done). As I'll eventually get the pictures for all these, best to plan ahead and split off cities one by one. Probably Portland next. However, the US Marine Hospital is showing different lat/long on the article page than in the edit page for me. But then, WP is slow for me today.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 14:50, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No complaints; I'm not saying that you're slow. Thanks for the help — I've never been to Louisville, except for interstate travel, so it's good to have someone who knows what he's doing :-) Nyttend (talk) 15:33, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kentucky in the War of 1812

[edit]

Yeah, I might be able to help on that article, but it won't be next week, as I'll be out of town on business with very spotty access to Wikipedia and even spottier access to anything resembling a reliable source. I'll also be juggling a few FA and GA noms, but given the current "molasses in January" rate that those things are going, it shouldn't interfere too much.

Since I did the bulk of the articles on Isaac Shelby (current FA nom), Richard Mentor Johnson (GA), and John Adair (GA), I could probably do some additions regarding the Battle of the Thames and the Battle of New Orleans. Particularly of interest to me is the feud between Adair and Andrew Jackson over the supposed cowardice of some poorly-armed Kentuckians at New Orleans. I think fleshing out that section of Adair's article might be enough to elevate it to FA.

Looks like you've already done a little looking into the Battle of Frenchtown (River Raisin), which was unquestionably of major importance to Kentucky for years to come. Maybe you can continue to flesh this out, and we'll go from there. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 16:12, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Like you, I am also busy in several things. Still, it's a fun little article to do. You know more about the people involved than I do. If it takes time to do the article, so be it.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 16:15, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, then. I'll try to add a few names I know to the template and maybe flesh out a Further reading section in the article so we'll have some place to add good resources as we find them. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 16:17, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ancestry.com has a book entitled Kentucky in the War of 1812 for free viewing. Might be helpful.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 16:21, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have a good day. --IvoShandor (talk) 17:02, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Marianna Fault

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Marianna Fault at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! I can't find support in any of the sources for the claim that the fault was discovered in January (or precisely on January 21, as the article says). More likely, the work was done over many months and the press release came out in January. --Amble (talk) 07:24, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Food for thought: as of the 23:09 Jan 27, 2009 update, in 5 of the 10 pools one contestant has over half the points in the pool.--King Bedford I Seek his grace 23:16, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

And in honorary pool K, one honorary contestant has 100% of the points in the pool! Chergles (talk) 15:56, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
