Gratuitous use of Chinese in Vietnamese language

[edit]

Please note that Vietnamese no longer uses Chinese characters. Any use of Chinese characters in the article must be in context of this fact. If you mark every Vietnamese term with these characters, readers will be under the false impression that Vietnamese still uses these characters. DHN (talk) 19:11, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see how this is bad. Korean nowadays scarcely uses Hanja as well, yet all Korean-related pages have Hanja in them. There is no ill in adding tiny pieces of additional information. And no, adding Chinese characters do not incline to the reader that Vietnamese still uses them, because any sane reader would read the LEDE first when coming across an article. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 02:28, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, many Vietnamese-related articles are annotated with Chu Han in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and other Wikipedias regardless of whether the same Chu Han annotations are used in Vietnam Wikipedia or not. Besides, for readers who from East Asian Cultural Sphere or who are familiar with Chu Han, it will be a good help for them to understand the original meaning of the certain terms if Chu Han annotations were used. Moreover, Chu Han is still used in some special cases in Vietnam, such as traditional ceremonies, history studies, traditional literature or Han Nom studies. By the way, I insist that people should not forget their own history and cultures.--서공·Tây Cống·セイコゥ? ủybanphụchoạthánnômviệtnam 13:55, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unlike Korean and Japanese names, modern Vietnamese names are never annotated by Chinese characters in official records. Therefore, it is impossible to map a Vietnamese name into Chinese characters without original research. DHN (talk) 17:06, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help page

[edit]

Hi, Betoseha. I was doing new pages patrol, and I noticed that you created the page Help:Vietnamese a bit over a week ago, and designated a translation in progress. Nothing further has been done with it since. Since it is unusual to have pages in the Help namespace in a foreign language, and I don't read Chinese or Vietnamese, I was hoping you could clarify what you intend to do with this page. If the page is a mistake (put into the wrong namespace, for example), I would be happy to try to help you fix it. Any feedback you can provide would be appreciated. --RL0919 (talk) 15:53, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject East Asia Scope & Ratings

[edit]

Hello. This message is to inform you that I have called for a reexamination of the scope document and the ratings system used by the project. The ratings system especially has run into problems and could benefit from a simplification and generalizations. The scope, too, could be reexamined to the same end. Please come to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject East Asia and discuss the matters so that we can reach a community consensus. I'd like to have it done before Christmas, so I can spend the break making any necessary changes. The importance discussion is at the top of the page. The scope discussion is at the bottom, but we can move them together if we need to.

Thank you, Sven Manguard Wha? 07:14, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Betoseha. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Chinese characters in Vietnam".
