License tagging for Image:Judith-novel.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Judith-novel.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:BrianC.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BrianC.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:11, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading Image:Brian - RTE Still (Original 1962) Low Res.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 10:00, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I saw you ignored my edit comment regarding a revert of a previous edit made to this article. The notable alumni list is growing into an example farm. Actually, it already is one. I've not reverted your new addition to this list, but have instead raised the issue on the article talk page. I'm sure it wasn't your intent to edit war, but it might have been better to have opened discussions on the talk page yourself before adding another name to the list after seeing the edit summary. In any case, I've tagged the article section as an example farm and have raised a discussion on the talk page if you'd like to join in! ColdmachineTalk 21:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have undone that last addition to the list. No edit war intended! Good luck with cleaning up the article. Jim Bruce 12:14, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Luke Kelly & Deirdre O'Connell

[edit]

Are you a fan of Luke Kelly and Deirdre O'Connell? I saw you made some edits on both of their pages. (Red4tribe (talk) 04:49, 23 April 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Yes, I'm a fan of Luke Kelly for many years. My interest in Deirdre O'Connell comes from my admiration for one of her first students, the actor Tom Hickey. Although Luke is rightly acknowledged in Ireland for his tremendous contribution to music here, Deirdre is less well remembered and that is why I created the Wikipedia article. Jim Bruce (talk) 13:08, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They are actually my Aunt and Uncle,I do not remember Luke Kelly so well because he died when I was very young but I do remember Deirdre O'Connell quite well. (Red4tribe (talk) 18:06, 23 April 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I am sure you are very proud of both of them. They were two very gifted people. Jim Bruce (talk) 09:42, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Condensed Milk Company (small logo).jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Condensed Milk Company (small logo).jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. Irish/British

[edit]

Hi Jim, I noticed you repeatedly changed A.J. Potter's national categorisation from British to Irish. Don't know who often you may have done similar things in other articles. Please note that Potter was born in Belfast in 1918 and therefore had a UK passport. I know that "British" may include England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland. Yet I think in this case a British category is not wrong. User:Ser Amantio di Nicolao this morning (9 June 2015) included a British category in about 30 articles relating to Irish composers (on my watchlist), all historical people, where this is justifiable, don't you think? Aklein62 (talk) 09:06, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. I changed my mind. Actually, you are right. A few minutes ago I asked "Ser Amantio" to stop installing "British" categories where Irish people are concerned. Ireland may have been part of the United Kingdom, but it certainly never was "British". I will delete those British categories in all Irish composer articles. And I already got a message from him that this is okay (in my own user talk). Aklein62 (talk) 15:57, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying this. The question came up several years ago when someone tried to reclassify as British anyone born in Ireland prior to 1922. That category includes among many others Patrick Pearse and former Taoiseach Jack Lynch. Thankfully common sense prevailed.Jim Bruce (talk) 08:41, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jim. I edited the Wikipedia entry for George Morrison (documentary maker) to include his middle name, Edward. You've now taken it out. Why, lad? Cé'n fáth, a bhuachaill? Percebushby (talk) 08:49, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Perce. I removed your edit because you did not cite any source and I could find no authority to suggest that your edit is valid. You have since re-edited the article, this time citing the ODNB. However, all the subjects in this dictionary are dead and, because he is still alive, George Morrison is not listed in the online version which I have just consulted. So I am afraid I have had to remove your second edit. Hope you can find a valid source next time. Slán leat. Jim Bruce (talk) 13:30, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Good man, Jim. Try consulting the ODNB entry for George's late wife, Theodora Fitzgibbon. Percebushby (talk) 00:20, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted edit in article Charles Acton (critic)

[edit]

Hi Jim,
I was wondering why you reverted this edit. Am I missing someting? Regards, Mill 1 (talk) 09:26, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Yes, I reverted your edit in which you added the adjective 'British' to the introduction of this article. Although born in England, Acton was from an Anglo-Irish background and spent most of his life living in Ireland. Perhaps you added 'British' to the descriptor because of Acton's place of birth? The rest of the Acton article provides his residency details so I don't think it is necessary to classify him as Irish or British in the first sentence. What do you think? Jim Bruce (talk) 10:19, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The name of Cecil Sheridan's wife

[edit]

I was reading <<On reflection>> written by Cecil Sheridan's son, Noel Sheridan. The part which is called "The Head"(pp.153~164) of the book was dedicated to his father Cecil. I found the name of his mother not Ann Doyle but Nan Doyle on the page of 159. Where did you get the name of Cecil's wife? Can you double check it? 선의의 바람 (talk) 01:02, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Quite often 'pet names' or nicknames are used instead of proper names. In this case, Ann Doyle, as she was before marriage, was apparently known within family circles as "Nan". I found this information in the entry on Noel Sheridan and Cecil Sheridan in the Dictionary of Irish Biography. I have altered the Wikipedia page on Cecil Sheridan to clarify his wife's name. I hope this helps. Jim Bruce (talk) 11:13, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Cleeve

[edit]

What's the problem? See WP:SUBCAT. GiantSnowman 08:59, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your edit because the new cateogory does not seem appropriate. Cleeve opposed apartheid when he lived in South Africa between 1948 and 1954. That's what led to him leaving the country and settling in Ireland. He was never a public opponent of apartheid after that. So I don't think he fits well into a category that includes 'activists outside South Africa noted for their opposition to apartheid'. If you think a more precise categorisation is required "White South African anti-apartheid activists" would probably be better. Otherwise I suggest leaving the article where it is. Jim Bruce (talk) 09:42, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to move to 'White South African anti-apartheid activists' then do so, although that is less appropriate because he was not South African. GiantSnowman 10:36, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
True. I don't want to overcomplicate matters so I'm happy to leave the article under the original category. Jim Bruce (talk) 13:50, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Are you saying he stopped opposing apartheid as soon as he left South Africa? Was he a non-South African opponent of apartheid? Then the SUBCAT is valid. GiantSnowman 09:00, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes to the first question, if you mean publicly opposing apartheid. While he lived in South Africa he was a vocal opponent of apartheid. That's why he had to leave. He may have remained opposed to apartheid after that, but he did not, as far as I know, continue as a public activist. This sub-category includes a lot people who never lived in South Africa, but who opposed apartheid from afar. Cleeve was the exact opposite. Am I pedantic to suggest that the sub-category is being loosely interpreted? Genuine anti-apartheid activists such as Trevor Huddleston are included along with people like Bruce Springsteen and Idi Amin! Not your doing I know. Just venting my frustration. Jacob's award

[edit]

Hi, Jim. It's actually a good article (well done) and I was glad to see it there, years ago. Although the article needs citations, I don't dispute any of the contents, which are accurate. It's just that the citations are missing for what I described as the "bulk" of the article, by which I mean most of its length contains lists of awards (sections Winners – multiple awards and Winners – full details), only a handful of which have citations. The preceding prose sections are all well referenced.

The article recalls amusing memories of the awards ceremony at which famous actresses and on-screen personalities in elegant evening gowns could be seen tottering precariously on high heels after numerous visits to the free bar, and Frank Hall mounted a table and banged an empty Jacob's biscuit tin with a dinner spoon to call on the Taoiseach to sing. The leader of the nation, also being very well lubricated by free drink, freely obliged.

Attendees in formal evening wear were collected from home by a black Princess limousine (very far from which most of them were reared) and were delivered back, very much the worse for wear, at the end of the night. The legendary occasion is missed. — O'Dea (talk) 11:03, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments. I suspect the longevity and success of the Jacob's Awards was entirely due to Frankie Byrne. When she died so did the award show. What an amazing woman she was. I think I see why you added that tag to the article. When I listed the winners for each year I stuck a single citation at the end of the list. The reference in question is usually a newspaper report of the ceremony listing the winners. So I didn't think it necessary to put the same footnote after each winner's name. Maybe I should? The summary list at the top of the article is drawn from the individual years' reports further down. Perhaps I should also add the same list of references to these?
