Hi, Ludo29, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page or place helpme on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

Additional tips

[edit]

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Question

[edit]

<moved from Village pump> Excuse me but I'm french, and I don't speak english very well. I don't know if it's the good place for this question. On wiki:fr we have a question. How many town in UK, in England ? Thanks. Ludo29 10:00, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a difficult question. Although towns in England are distinguished from villages and cities, it is not always clear whether somewhere is a village, a town or a suburb of somewhere else. We have a list of towns in England, which I think has about 800 towns listed, but every now and then somebody adds another one. Warofdreams talk 16:20, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unitary authorities

[edit]

Hi - unitary authorities are subdivisions of metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties of England - or in many cases, are counties themselves (see for a list). However, "county" means different things to different people, and Stockton-on-Tees is a unitary authority falling in two ceremonial counties of England.

Metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties are subdivisions of regions, so unitary authorities are also subdivisions of regions.

Hope this helps! Warofdreams talk 02:28, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request of unblock

[edit]

@331dot: any reason why not to apply the Wikipedia:IP block exemption? Ludo is a long-time trusted user (he was sysop for ~10 years on fr.wp). Cheers, VIGNERON * discut. 12:20, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's my understanding that the user needs to demonstrate an exceptional need as well. 331dot (talk) 14:13, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, how about "Contribute to the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit" as a need? Like, it's literally the second first sentence on the front page (right after "Welcome"). Popo le Chien throw a bone 14:50, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot: where does this « exceptional need » come from? I've never heard of it, it's not documented on Wikipedia:IP block exemption and on Wikipedia_talk:IP_block_exemption/log I can see many user with nothing exceptional (I even see a « Affected by a rangeblock not intended for them. » which is exactly the situation here). Pinging @SQL: who granted a lot of these exemptions (and who blocked this IP range). Cheers, VIGNERON * discut. 15:16, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
These types of blocks would mean very little if exemptions to them were handed out to anyone that asked. There are currently only 381 accounts with exemptions. This user is free to ask for an exemption, another administrator will review such a request. 331dot (talk) 16:28, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot:
I've made a request to be unlock. I know that i'm blocked not about my contributions, but just about my IP address. So, Yes, since the beginning i ask to have an exemption.
I make contributions on the wikimedia projects since 15 years. I don't understand the reason of your refusal.
Which ones of my contributions here are a danger for Wikipedia ?
Ludo29 (talk) 17:00, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did not say your contributions were dangerous to Wikipedia or anything about your contributions. This only has to do with your IP being a webhost. If you want to ask for an exemption, instructions are given below. 331dot (talk) 19:21, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) Since I was pinged here:
    From Wikipedia:IP_block_exemption#Used_for_anonymous_proxy_editing,
An editor who demonstrates a need, and can be trusted not to abuse the right.
It is correct that an exceptional need isn't required, but there must be a demonstrable need to edit via open or anonymizing proxies. With regard to requesting IPBE, the same section even goes on to say (emphasis mine):
Email the checkuser team at checkuser-en-wp@wikipedia.org ensuring your email includes your username, or contact a CheckUser directly, explaining why you need to edit via anonymous proxies.
A vast majority of the requests I've granted have been editors from China, Iran, Turkey, and other situations where editing is literally impossible without using a VPN or other anonymizing proxy (which is what that range pretty clearly is, [1], [2]). The rest have been editors affected by checkuser rangeblocks not intended for them.
This isn't a no, but an explanation of the process, and the conditions surrounding IPBE on the English Wikipedia. SQLQuery me! 17:14, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • SQL Apologies, I think my use of "exceptional" gives a stronger meaning than I intended. 331dot (talk) 19:21, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot: The IPBE policy did indeed use the words "exceptional need", but it was softened some time ago.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:27, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@331dot:@SQL: Ok, I looked it up and I see where the misunderstanding stems from Ludo29's work IP being somehow listed as a proxy on your side, whereas it's just a regular ISP on his (why, I do not know; first time I see such thing). I see here that a couple of IPs within the range are attributed to secondary schools, so yes it can be source for disruptive editing. This being said, frwp have lifted the rangeblock so I don't think there's any reason to think things should be any different here. Popo le Chien throw a bone 09:37, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
