Since you did such excellent work on the two maps of the northern operations in this little war, perhaps you'd like to take a stab at a map of the southern (coastal) operations? There is a map on p. 13 in this. If you are interested and need any help translating or interpreting the map, just let me know. Srnec (talk) 00:17, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Srnec: I can do that but not for a couple of weeks. If you can wait I will make a the map. --Goran tek-en (talk) 13:48, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Srnec (talk) 16:42, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, I can and am more than willing to wait. (I just wanted to remind you, in case you forgot. No rush, and if you're not interested, just let me know.) Srnec (talk) 02:28, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: Now I have started with this map and I do need a translation of the legend on p13, thanks.
Also I need to know if you want a map like this File:Italian_offensive_Mont_Cenis-1940.svg or you want a more topographic like the one we are working on here? --Goran tek-en (talk) 10:42, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Limite du sous-secteur des Corniches = Limit of the sub-sector of Corniches (cf. here)
Position de Résistance = Main line of resistance
Ligne d’armistice = Armistice line
Frontière franco-italienne = Franco-Italian border
Ouvrage d’avant-poste = Advance post
Ouvrage de la Ligne Maginot = Maginot Line fortification
Point d’appui = Staging area
Emplacement de S.E.S. = S.E.S. emplacement (post?)
Train armé de la Marine italienne = Italian naval armed train
Batterie d’artillerie lourde sur voie ferrée = Heavy artillery battery on railway
Projet de débarquement des Chemises Noires = Planned Blackshirt landing
Infiltrations italiennes = Italian infiltrations (troop movements? invasion routes?)
Batterie d’artillerie de position du XV° Corps = Fortress artillery battery of XV Corps (see here)

Note that we use avant-poste and ouvrage untranslated in our article. Point d'appui is also a term of art that often goes untranslated. All the terms on the map appear to be either geographic terms or unit names that need no translating, but let me know if there's anything that needs clarifying. Srnec (talk) 13:44, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think you can follow the format of the battle maps you've already done, for consistency. Srnec (talk) 13:45, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: Now there is a draft for you to look at. The handmade map that we use as base doesn't match OSM or Google maps, especially the rivers are difficult to match. To make this as accurate as possible I have tried to adjust the hand made map to the other. I have fixed peaks, border and so on. So you really have to check the position on all things because I have had to guess some. Maybe you guys with your knowledge can tell me what to change. Give me all kind of feedback so that the map will be what you want, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 15:11, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome work!
The sub-sector to the north of the dashed line is that of Sospel. Perhaps you could label the sub-sectors directly on the map? Pont Saint-Louis is right on the border (in fact, the actual pont [bridge] is mostly on the Italian side) just north of the railway, with the French ouvrage right on the French side of the border. Where you wrote "Ouvrage avant-poste", write "Ouvrage d'avant-poste". Where you wrote "Fortress artillery battery of XV Corps", I now think we ought to go with "Static artillery battery of XV Corps". A BAF is a Bataillon alpin de forteresse (alpine fortress battalion); a RAP is a Régiment d'artillerie de position (static artillery regiment); and a RALH is a Régiment d'artillerie lourde hippomobile (horse-drawn heavy artillery regiment). RI and BCN are French acronyms for an Italian infantry regiment and Blackshirt battalion, respectively. I would change them to RF (for reggimento di fanteria) and Btg.CC.NN (unfortunately, that's the only abbreviation for battaglione di Camicie Nere I can find). I know it's scrunched, but I think train No. 2 should be on the Italian side of the border, at least until I can confirm that it crossed the border. Castelbar is actually Castellar. L'Annoaciade is L'Annonciade. Sainte Agnes should be Sainte-Agnès.
That's all for now. Here is another PDF with a similar map (p. 8) if you want to take a look. Srnec (talk) 00:22, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
One other thing: I think the title in the legend should be changed from "Italian invasion of France, 10–25 June 1940" to "Battle of Menton, 21–25 June 1940". Srnec (talk) 00:24, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: Thanks for the feedback. New draft for you to look at. Did you want me to put in the translations for R.A.P. etc? Give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:54, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The "No. 2" got left behind when you moved the train. I should have put a period at the end of "Btg.CC.NN." You could show a projected Blackshirt landing on the other side of Cap Martin per the second PDF I linked to. Perhaps you could move the dot (ouvrage) associated with the text Pont Saint Louis immediately to the French side of the border just north of the railway and place a bridge symbol across the border next to it. Then just put "Pont Saint-Louis" in the legend next the bridge symbol. (I think it would be nice if we could get the border of the commune of Menton in there, and re-label the white dot "Vieux Menton". See the 2nd PDF. I'll leave this up to you, since approximating that border might be difficult.) If the legend gets bulky, perhaps just add "Sub-sector of" to the labels on the map and remove it from the box. There is also room to label the Blackshirt operations on the map if need be. I really would prefer to get explanations of the acronyms in the legend, but it might be too much. Srnec (talk) 03:14, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: Look at the draft and give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 20:06, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can you flip the relative positions of the bridge and the ouvrage at Pont Saint-Louis? This may require moving train No. 2 back from the border, which is not a big deal. Could you make the second legend look like this:
B.A.F. = Bataillon alpin de forteresse
Alpine fortress battalion
R.A.P. = Régiment d'artillerie de position
Static artillery regiment
R.A.L.H. = Régiment d'artillerie lourde hippomobile
Horse-drawn heavy artillery regiment
R.F. = Reggimento di fanteria
Infantry regiment
Btg.CC.NN. = Battaglione di Camicie Nere
Blackshirt battalion
I'm hoping that won't take up more room. Otherwise I'd just nix it, since untranslated explanations of the acronyms probably don't help the average reader. Srnec (talk) 00:57, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Srnec: Look at the draft and give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 14:02, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent! I think that's about it. Thanks, Srnec (talk) 19:49, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: Then I will need this;
  • Battle_of_Menton_(1940)
  • Map depicting the actions of the Italian First Army during the invasion of France (1940), based on p. 13 of this PDF, originally from Jean-Louis Panicacci, Menton dans la tourmente, 1939–1945 (2004).
  • Category:Battle maps of World War II —Srnec (talk) 23:20, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now you can find it here. Battle of Menton (1940) --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:54, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another map

[edit]

Hi! If you're willing, I've got another map that could use drawing up. This one is going to be more complicated. Essentially, I want a map of the vicinity of Donetsk airport. This is important, as the recent battles there have involved a bit of moving about that isn't easy to show in prose without a map. Now, I don't have any template for such a close-up map. The only thing I've got as a source is this. Obviously, I don't want a satellite map. However, it shows the essential locations that should be depicted by the map I'm proposing. These include the airport itself, the village of Pisky, &c. The map should depict the airport and the neighbouring districts of Donetsk, such as Kyivsky. Here is an existing map of the districts, so that you can situate them relative to the airport. This seems a bit more daunting, but I'd appreciate if we can do some work on it. A map of the terminal buildings and the neighbouring districts would be a great boon to our article on the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport. RGloucester 03:43, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Right now I have a lot to do so I will not be able for some time, weeks up to a month. If you can wait I will look at it, if you can't wait please let me know, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 11:46, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's fine. Just tell me when you are available. RGloucester 14:13, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: I have started to look at this request now.

I'll get on the other stuff later, but the essential thing is that I want a diagram of the airport and the surrounding villages. No troop movements. Just a diagram that shows where everything is, so that the prose can talk about troop movements without it being confusing. Do you kind of understand that? I can work on translations, if you like, but Google Translate seems to give an adequate translation here, having checked. Openstreet might provide a useful layout of the area, as well. RGloucester 14:17, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@RGloucester: When I and other do graphic work we do just that, graphic work. The idea is that we provide the knowledge and time to make a request be made into an illustration, map or other. We do not make research, translations and other things. Mostly we have no knowledge of the subject, language and so on. So I will stick to this idea and wait for the translations from you. I hope you don't think I'm to hard on this but I make more use just sticking to graphic work, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:16, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, it seems the website for the the informnapalm map went down. In other words, we have to rely on this one. I'll requested a translation from Iryna Harpy. If she obliges, we should be set. Mimicing this map map, a diagram of the airport and surrounding area, is essentially what is needed for the article. The loss of the other map is not that grave. RGloucester 18:52, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: I have the maps downloaded and you can find them here [3] [4] and I also need translations for this File:Raions_of_Donetsk_and_Donetsk_City_Municipality.PNG. --Goran tek-en (talk) 20:19, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, excellent. I don't think the districts map is very useful. I only included it without thinking. It is the totally wrong scale. Forget about that. RGloucester 20:21, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please find the translated (enlarged version) of the map translation (as .JPG) requested by RGloucester here. The .RTF version can be downloaded here. It was far too awkward to write up a list pointing to every box, street name, town, etc. Instead, I plonked the English text on the original image. Damned awkward stuff, I have to tell you. I needed to research the A-1402 form of references that happen to be military units that don't have any standard English language form, nor do any English language articles use the conventions (they probably don't know what they mean themselves). Instead, I've tried an 'as good as I can get it without writing a treatise' version. Hope this helps. Cheers! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:55, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent work, Iryna, and much appreciated. Hopefully we can have a good map to use for this blasted battle. RGloucester 04:28, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Goran tek-en: the "Putilov Junction" mentioned by that map is more conventionally called "Putylivskiy bridge" in the sources that I've seen. RGloucester 04:30, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Scrap the previous versions if you've already downloaded them. I've run a search and discovered two street names in their Ukrainian form, so I've updated both the rtf and the jpg. I'm not certain about the M-4 route as it isn't listed on Google maps. It translates as being track/little road/route which fits in with news reports about the dirt tracks that have been used in blowing each other up. I thought it better to call it a route (with a capital letter) as it mightent be Route 66, but it's a strategically important thoroughfare. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 04:47, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That should be this: Highway M04 (Ukraine). It to the north of the airport. The scale on this diagram is a bit odd. RGloucester 04:49, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I did notice that the scale seems highly reminiscent of medieval 'maps' of Western European proximity to Jerusalem... but they weren't actually trying to depict an 'in this world' map. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 05:18, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It reminded me of the same. Then again, however, those maps served their purpose, just as this one does. Scale isn't as important as showing where things are in relation to each other. Regardless, the M04 is very important. It is the whole reason that there is a battle in Debaltseve, really. It links Donetsk, Luhansk, and the Izvaryne border crossing, which has been the source of much of the Russian rubbish. RGloucester 05:23, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the RTF and the JPG to reflect all of the changes (Highway M04, Putilov Junction and such). If there are any other outstanding issues, let me know. It's a lot easier for Goran-tek to have it ready to work from rather than sort through the blurb here. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 05:48, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Iryna Harpy:@RGloucester: Thanks a lot for the translations. There is one thing I don't understand though. The RTF file is a translation for image 17 and 27 but how do you want me to know which is which word? --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:01, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the translated map Iryna provided. It is easy to align them. Try and follow that map, rather than the others. RGloucester 19:31, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've re-uploaded the map and the corresponding text with a legend to make it easier to follow. Please download both files again: RTF with colour-coded legend + JPG map with colour-coded legend. I hope this makes your job easier, Goran tek-en. Thanks, in advance, for your hard work! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 00:54, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry but it was probably my mistake. I thought that the rtf-file was the translation of image 17.jpg and 27.jpg but now I realize that the translation was meant for the JPG map with colour-coded legend. So I will use the information/translation for this map and NOT use any information from 17.jpg and 27.jpg, is that correct?
I'm sorry for my mistake and the extra work you had to put in Iryna Harpy. --Goran tek-en (talk) 11:58, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. For now, do what you just said. Base it off the JPG map, and we'll go from there. RGloucester 14:08, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Correct... and not a problem, Goran tek-en. Thank you for the time you're putting into this. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 00:45, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: Now there is a first draft for you to look at. There is differences, as always, between our basemap and a map from OSM or Google maps. I haven't added everything from our basemap, it's a mix of both sources. So check it and give me feedback what to change/add/remove and tell me what total area you want, tell me what you want, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:09, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looking good so far. My only question is to ask what the light blue-shaded areas represent. I'd also say that you could remove anything north of the M04 highway. We don't need that stuff for the purposes of what we're doing here. It is more important to focus on the stuff south of the M04. RGloucester 19:00, 11 February 2015 (UTC) RGloucester 18:56, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@RGloucester: New draft to look at. The light blue irregular shapes are water, lakes/rivers. If you don't want them or you want me to dim them down just tell me. I havent really understood exatly which area you are interested in so if you can show it on a bitmap or something it would help me.
The important stuff needs to be labelled (with text), similar to the way the base map is labelled. The best thing to do is start by labelling it the way the source map is labelled. The only thing I would not include are the actual troop movements. All the other labels are needed. I wasn't asking about the rivers, but about the big blue areas. The focus should be on the area between the M04 and Stratonativ Street. The airport, Pisky, Spartak. The area south of Stratonativ Street is the Donetsk city outskirts. The area across the railway tracks and over Putylivskyi Bridge is Donetsk city proper. RGloucester 19:30, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@RGloucester: New draft to look at.
The blue areas was dark brown Ukraine areas from the base map. I have now changed so that all the areas has the same color. You have to tell me if you want different areas and colored in a special way. Look also at the box line to check if that is the total map area you want, give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 14:19, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, this is looking good. Is the attention to cut off the stuff that is outside the box? That seems like a good idea to me. It would make the map more visible. I'd argue that instead of writing "Donetsk", write "Kyivskyi District". All of this is in Donetsk. I'd also say remove the marker for the hotel. Having looked at the sources, it isn't an important thing to mark, and just add clutters. I'd also remove the aeroplane icon as un-needed. Replace "airstrip" with "runway". For Pisky, it is necessary to add a left arrow with the name, so that people understand that the village continues off the map. I think that, for the new terminal, old terminal, and control tower, and Putylivskiy bridge we should use numbers/letters with a legend, rather than full names. That will prevent clutter. The other stuff can stay as it is. I also think that the Kyivskyi district area south of Stratonaiv should have some indication that it is heavily populated, i.e. there are lots of residential buildings. It isn't just open space, like the area to the north. Other than that, the only thing missing are the territorial lines, i.e. the indication of who controlled what. RGloucester 16:01, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: New draft to look at.
I didn't add the arrow at Pisky but did some other things that i hope one understands as you mean. For the territorial lines you have to tell me specific what to put in. Also give me a "Titel" for the map, give me feedback, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:27, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is looking excellent, now. You really are a lifesaver with these maps. Anyway, first thing is that I think one should also show the populated area across the railway tracks. It shouldn't just look like there is nothing there, because once again, that is a populated area. I guess we scrap the territorial lines, for now. Unless I find a better source, it will be too difficult to demarcate. You can title the map "Battle of Donetsk Airport". Could you consider adding an arrow at the top of the map pointing to Opytne? That's where a lot of artillery was located, so just noting the direction will be useful. RGloucester 19:40, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Having done a bit of research, I also believe we should fill in the rest of the airport buildings. I don't think we need to label them, just put them there so it doesn't look empty. See this map. We should fill in all the buildings to the east of the terminals. If you want a translation of the numbers, I'll provide it here. Don't worry about labelling these.

1 - Monastery and graveyard; 2 - Metro supermarket; 3 - Lexus car dealership; 4 - New terminal; 5 - Bus station; 6 - Fuel storage tanks; 7 - Airport scrapyard; 8 - VIP terminal (under construction); 9 - Hangars; 10 - Control tower (outside of the map); 11 - Old terminal; 12 - Old VIP terminal; 13 - Control centre for DonbasAero; 14 - Hotel; 15 - Civil Aviation office; 16 - Aircraft repair centre; 17 - HVAC for terminals; 18 - Command and control room; 19 - Firehouse; Objects coloured blue are not airport buildings

I hope this is helpful. RGloucester 23:58, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@RGloucester: Thanks for the info and a new draft to look at. I'm not sure that I got all the buildings but just tell me what to change. I also added "area" for two things, just tell me if you like it or not as it's not buildings. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:25, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're missing buildings 2 and 3. In addition, it seems we're missing the old tarmac to the north of 13, where there are big red cyrillic letters. Also, I'm fairly certain that Opytne is not 60km north of the airport. It is about 6km, I think. RGloucester 18:39, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it seems that the Opytne arrow is in the entirely wrong place. Take a look at Google Maps. It is just off the M04 on the north side. It is just north of the airport, not north-east. RGloucester 21:48, 15 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: The really interesting thing is that this link at Google Maps doesn't really show you a position mark. So if you click on the search glass without changing anything you will see the place I had marked out, you have to zoom out to get Donetsk in view. That was how I searched and with out local knowledge that's were I put it. Anyway it's changed now. New draft for you to give me feedback on, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:51, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. Time to wrap up. Call in "Battle of Donetsk Airport" or "Battle of Donetsk Airport map". Should be in the "War in Donbass" category. RGloucester 17:55, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now you can find it here Battle of Donetsk Airport. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:35, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 Done

Oh no! Another map

[edit]

Thanks so much for the above map, Goran tek-en. It is absolutely excellent work. Now, I left this section here as I have another task. This one should be easy, as the source is very good. It is for the Battle of Debaltseve article. The source is a map that appears in this article from the BBC. I'd like a copy of that map. The only thing that should be left out is the box showing all of Ukraine. If you're willing, I'd like to work on this. Ask me if you have questions. RGloucester 01:57, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: Just started to work on it.
But I need your feedback on this here, look at this image. I have moved a piece of the area from the left map to the right map, green line.
That was the case. Take a look at the map at the right, which shows the individual villages. The south-west bit is the village of Chornukhyne, which was not captured by the separatists until 20 February. I'm not sure about the south-east spike, though. The source is reliable, so I assume that that was an attempt by Ukrainian forces to break-out of the encirclement. RGloucester 18:59, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not totally comfortable with to copy their maps right of. I have tried to make another version of the information so have a look at this draft and see if you understand it. Give me feedback on it, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 20:04, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
First off, there are some spelling corrections to be done. Change "rebel" to "DPR/LPR". The spelling should be "February". Also, write "Artemivsk", not "Artemisk". In addition, please change the colour of the DPR/LPR territory to a lighter shade of red, to allow the arrows to show-up better. Also, it would be good if you could add Luhanske and Horlivka to the map. RGloucester 20:26, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@RGloucester: New draft, feedback. --Goran tek-en (talk) 14:37, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That's excellent, except that it is the wrong Luhanske. We want the one in Artemivsk Raion. One last thing, please add a symbol for Donetsk airport. RGloucester 14:40, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A few more revisions, if you don't mind. If possible, please also add Vuhlehirsk to the map. Remove Kramatorsk, and add Sloviansk in its place. This should make the map show the more relevant areas. RGloucester 17:09, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@RGloucester: New draft, feedback. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:09, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, excellent! One final thing, and then we can create it. Instead of saying "after 18 February", please say "on 18 February". Also, make sure to use endashes (–) for the dates, rather than hyphens (-). After you've fixed those two things, please create the map as "Battle of Debaltseve" in the "War in Donbass" category. Thanks again! RGloucester 19:17, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@RGloucester:That file name "Battle of Debaltseve" is already taken by your own file. Please give me another name, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:33, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"Withdrawal from Debaltseve" is good. RGloucester 20:07, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now you can find it here Withdrawal from Debaltseve. --Goran tek-en (talk) 23:09, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 Done

Thank you so much! However, it seems I missed one spelling mistake. Presently, it reads "Ukrainan" instead of "Ukrainian". Please fix this error. RGloucester 00:09, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Updated. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:01, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For your patience dealing with me over the last two months to produce an excellent map of the Alpine Line, and your great work in general to help illustrate the Italian invasion of France article, i present you with this small token of my gratitude.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 01:24, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Any chances to have those completed, please?

[edit]

Hello! I apologize for bothering, but would you, by a chance, be willing to pick up a few requests I've placed quite a long time on Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop‎? Or do you maybe know someone else willing to do that? It would highly benefit the articles in which those illustrations would be used, and I have one or two more illustrations that could be created. Any help would be appreciated! — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 12:39, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Dsimic: If you can link directly to the different requests it will be easier for me to check and see what I can do, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 14:23, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing, please have a look:
It would be great to have some of these completed, if possible of course. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 14:28, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Dsimic: OK, I will take them but not all at one time.
Also I have a thought I would like to hear what you think about. I have used computer for many years and my first was Amiga 500 and now I run Ubuntu 14.04. I'm not a high educated computer person but I have learned in different ways and done many different things in this area. I regard my self as a doer. I know where I want to go (achieve) and often I get there. I'm also an image person, not a text one. Anyway I saw that you are a part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing and my thought was this: Would that group have any use of me, not as an editor but as a graphist and a generally interested person? --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:04, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you soo much! I'm so happy that those illustrations will be created or updated. :)
Regarding the WikiProject Computing, unfortunately the number of editors who are really active in that field is quite low. There are just about a dozen of regulars, with not too many editors actually contributing new content, but various small article improvements are quite frequent. I'd say that your contributions could be highly useful, as numerous articles lack illustrations that could really improve the overall quality of articles. I don't know how much time do you have available, but I'm running into ideas for new illustrations quite often, and I could post them on Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop‎ – it you're willing to contribute to WikiProject Computing that way? — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 18:36, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure that's fine but it's not always I check so you can try to send me a ping. About that first file, I have some problems. I can't open it but I have contacted the last who edited it and hopefully we can sort it out. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:59, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen your comment on Victor's page; it might be worth trying to open the SVG file in some of the online SVG editors, and saving it there if opening succeeds. Also, it might be worth it to try opening some of the file's older revisions in Inkscape. Just my humble two cents. :) — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 19:06, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I did think about opening the older ones but then I will have to add more into the image so I will wait a little while. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:15, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Totally agreed. There's no hurry, and waiting for some time may save a lot of effort. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 19:19, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Dsimic: It seems as someone else is working on this Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop‎ § Two illustrations for the PCI Express article so I will move on to another one. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:09, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! I've provided some feedback at the Android version chart's entry on the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop‎, please have a look. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 00:26, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Dsimic: What I can see other graphics have completed the other two. So there is not any more for this time, correct? --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:25, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 Done
Exactly, what's great! :) Thank you once again, and I'll feel free to create new requests at the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop when I find some good new illustrations that could be created, while feeling free to ping you. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 21:59, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Update map request

[edit]

Hello Goran tek-en,

You've helped in this map before, was wondering if you can again: File:Nations_recognising_the_Armenian_Genocide.svg. The Czech Republic needs to be highlighted in Dark Green. Would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Étienne Dolet (talk) 18:23, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 Done --Goran tek-en (talk) 09:39, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Sorry to bug you again :) Can you add Austria as dark green? Thanks in advance, Étienne Dolet (talk) 08:22, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 Done --Goran tek-en (talk) 09:07, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Goran,

Is it possible to have a vectorized version of this map: [5]? Étienne Dolet (talk) 06:09, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You know it's possible so is your question really if I will do it? --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:47, 22 April 2015 (UTC) Haha! Yes :) how should we start though? Should I upload this map? Étienne Dolet (talk) 17:02, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can fetch it from that link but I will also need a link the the source. If you have one with higher resolution that would be great. I also assume that you have checked so that we can use it like that. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:29, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the source: [6]. By the way, I found this: File:United States Recognition of Armenian Genocide.png. But for one, it's not updated. And two, it's not vectorized. Hope that helps. Étienne Dolet (talk) 19:44, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
At the bottom of that page there is a copyright mark. To me this means that you will have to ask for permission for us to make a svg version to upload to https://commons.wikimedia.org. You might think I'm to hard on this but that is how we have to work. So check it, get an answer, preferably in writing and get back to me, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 21:47, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright isn't an issue at all here. The map is our own SVG map of the United States, all we have to do is fill which states recognized it or not based off of the information provided from the source. The copyright would be same as File:Same-sex marriage in the United States.svg, and I believe the blank USA map is here: File:Blank_US_Map.svg. Étienne Dolet (talk) 22:05, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Regarding copyright, to me it could be a matter of this if the knowledge/information that is used to create the map is not free.
  • Do you want the legend to be in the information on this file also?
  • Do you want the letters for each state to be in the map?
  • This blank map USA territories have I used as base as all their territories are in this one. If you now look at my draft you can see some blue islands encircled with a blue line in the bottom right corner. According to this map that should be MP which should be Northern Mariana Islands. What I can see it's not included in your reference map. Do you want me to remove it or do you know the status of it? Give me feedback, thanks --Goran tek-en (talk) 11:14, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dark green as which other map? We have a number of maps with different colors and I can't see any green... --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:59, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This one: File:Nations_recognising_the_Armenian_Genocide.svg. Étienne Dolet (talk) 18:06, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can you add dark green for Bulgaria as well? Sorry I keep bugging you about this. But, it's the 100th anniversary and things are moving fast. Étienne Dolet (talk) 09:28, 24 April 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]
Check this draft and give me feedback.
I will need the following;
  • Name of the file
  • Description
  • Category/ies at commons
to be able to upload it at commons, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:24, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey what happened to Alaska and Hawaii? It should be included in there. Étienne Dolet (talk) 16:07, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well you wrote "Remove the island's and such." so I removed what I thought was included in that. New draft to look at. Don't forget the information I asked for above, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:03, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay that's good enough! I'll handle the uploading myself. Earlier, when you said you didn't want to do it due to copyright issues, I made my own USA genocide recognition map here: File:States_that_recognized_Armenian_Genocide.svg. I'm just going to update this map with your draft since mine may be a bit too amateurish. Thanks for everything. Étienne Dolet (talk) 18:13, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@EtienneDolet: I don't like that option that you upload it yourself. I didn't say I didn't want to do it, I asked if you had checked if we needed permission to use that one as base. The draft that you have seen is NOT the final file regarding code, validity W3 and so on.
  • Do not use it, I don't allow you to do that. Even though we use open copyrights here we still use them so that creators get there credits, statistics and so on.
  • If you want to use it I will upload it to commons, and then I need the info I asked about.
  • If you have made one yourself, why do you ask me to do one, that doesn't feel good to me. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:42, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Goran, please understand that I really thought you didn't want to do it. I panicked a bit, since April 24 was approaching, and I went along and did it myself. In other words, I wanted the map to go up by then. If I left it to this discussion, the map wouldn't have been prepared yet. I'm sorry if I caused any sort of grievance. But it's okay, you can upload your map, and I'll delete mine. Be sure to use the description and sourcing from my map when you upload it. You can change the filename to: US states that recognized Armenian Genocide.svg. You can use the same description and information as well. Étienne Dolet (talk) 18:49, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you had a deadline you could have told me, I try to fulfill things like that. Now you can find it here US_states_that_recognized_Armenian_Genocide.  Done --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:28, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can you make Texas green on this map File:US_states_that_recognized_Armenian_Genocide.svg? Thanks so much. Map looks great! Étienne Dolet (talk) 05:54, 4 May 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]

Hello, can you make Brazil dark green? Thanks. Étienne Dolet (talk) 09:47, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I can if you tell me on what map? --Goran tek-en (talk) 11:28, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[edit]

Hello Goran tek-en,

Hope all is well. I stumbled upon this map which I thought would be useful to have on Wikipedia. Can you help make the map? If you're willing to do so, can you add the shaded areas to this map? It's only going to be the Turkey portion of the map. Thanks in advance, Étienne Dolet (talk) 00:32, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@EtienneDolet: I could do that and what I can see britannica.com gives you permission for that. But what shaded areas in the britanic map do you mean, to me there is gray and then green for the Kurdish settlement? --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:41, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The shaded areas would be the green area. And remember, it should be limited to Turkey. No other country. Will you be able to apply the green shaded area to the map of Turkish provinces successfully? If so that will be perfect. But I found this map: [7]. It can be a good guiding point for you. In fact, you may want to just use this map all together. It was published "M. R. Izady" from the Kurdish Institute in Paris and this is their official website: [8]. Étienne Dolet (talk) 18:13, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, I found that the map is already uploaded: [9]. It just needs to be in English. Perhaps we can just work off of this one? Étienne Dolet (talk) 08:07, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If that png file is good for you I can do a translation of it but I need the translation like this:
Kurdi text - English text
--Goran tek-en (talk) 13:12, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That map is the same as this one: [10]. Except it's in Kurdish. So can you use the legend found on that map? You can have it easily replaced. Also, limit the map to only Turkey by using the blank Turkey map I provided above. Avoid including Iraq, Iran, Syria and etc. Étienne Dolet (talk) 17:19, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@EtienneDolet: You do confuse me a bit but what I have done you can look at here, it's a draft and I want your feedback on it.
You have to tell me what country names and other things you want to be included, removed, edited.
As always one map doesn't fit another one so you have to check the Kurdish areas if the are good enough or what, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:55, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It looks good Goran. It's exactly how I wished. If you can change the "Majority of population is Kurdish" to "Areas where majority of the population is Kurdish". Also, can you change the color to some kind of green? But not a bright one. Étienne Dolet (talk) 18:00, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@EtienneDolet: New draft.
If it's OK then I will need the following;

  • Name of the file
  • Description
  • Category/ies at commons

to be able to upload it at commons, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:40, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Filename: Kurdish majority Turkey
  • Description: Map showing Kurdish majority areas within Turkey.
  • Category: Maps of Kurdish-inhabited regions

Thank you very much for you work. Étienne Dolet (talk) 16:51, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@EtienneDolet: Now you can find it here Kurdish majority Turkey. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:32, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
