Hi, since your name's down on this project, I'm just writing to let you know that there's a discussion going on at the moment on how to format events – and in particular, events that go on for multiple days – on year pages. Your input would be appreciated. — Smjg (talk) 18:21, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Communes of the...department

[edit]

Hi Olivier- It looks like you done a lot of work creating articles listing communes by department. I wanted to make an observation if you don't mind: the word order of the titles, e.g. "Communes of the Isère department", is tad awkward in English. A more natural way to word this would be more "Communes of the department of Isère", or simply "Communes of Isère". I also wonder--and this is a question, not a challenge--if these should maybe be categories rather than articles. I am not passionate about this; just wanted to throw in my two cents' worth. If you and others see my point and agree, would there some automated way (via bot?) to change them all? I know it would be too much work to manually move them. Hi Eric. Thank you for your comments. Some background first: I started creating many French communes articles at a time when few of them existed. To give some structure to my work and in the hope of attracting other contributors, I started Wikipedia:WikiProject French communes. The Wikiproject by itself has not been very active, but some people have put a lot of work in the project, as you can see at Wikipedia:WikiProject French communes/Status (check this page history as well). While I have been active there at the beginning of the project, other contributors have been far more active than myself afterwards. In the initial stages, the lists of communes were useful because they were listing the articles to be created, and helped identifying where disambiguation was needed. Now to answer your questions:
  • Name of the articles "Communes of the...". I really don't mind. If there is a more appropriate way to name these articles, that's perfectly fine with me to have these titles changed. That probably could be done manually.
  • Categories: the categories exist for each department. You can see the list there Wikipedia:WikiProject French communes/Status. The question could be: do we really need to have a list AND a category? Then my answer would be that I tend to prefer keeping the list articles, since they can contain more information than categories, for instance: number of communes, "intercommunalities", partial list of former communes, history of merger and demerger of communes.
I hope that I have answered your questions. If you want to collect more opinions, you could post your comments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject France, but I am not sure that you would receive much comment. You could also ask directly people who have been strong contributors to the project: User:M-le-mot-dit, User:Markussep, User:Rich Farmbrough, User:Kiwipete, User:Dr. Blofeld. Thank you again, I hope this helps. olivier (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Olivier- I see your point on the utility of the list articles, and recognize several of the users working on the project from my wanderings among France articles. The form of the article names was just something that has struck me a few times and I thought I'd run my observation by someone involved. But I'm not sure it's worth distracting others from their work to change it. Bravo on all your work here, by the way. Eric talk 13:23, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All right. Thank you. olivier (talk) 17:37, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
