WikiCast: Dormant account?

[edit]

Hi, Sorry to come back to you, but do you want me to declare your account on WikiCast as Dormant?

ShakespeareFan00 12:57, 20 April 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Yes, thanks for asking. Shadow1 (talk) 18:40, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Shadow,

I'm new to Wikipedia, so I apologize if I am not following protocol. I had recently edited a page by adding an external link, but your bot reversed the page I had added an external link too since the domain of the external link contained the word "porn". The external link is actually pointing to a review on the page's subject, so I did not think this would be considered spam. Here's the page [1]. I read on Wiki that external links to reviews are acceptable, but can you clarify if this is in fact spam, as I do not want to violate any of Wiki's policies. Thank you for your time...Llaxina 20:08, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not technically "spam," as you weren't trying to be a spammer with it, but I'm not entirely sure that the page needs another review link. It was essentially a false positive, nothing more. Shadow1 (talk) 12:03, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duran Duran Message Board

[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duran_duran

I've tried to post this message board address twice and it got deleted, it is a valid board, supported by Duran Duran. Hopefully it can stay where it is this time. Thanks.

http://duranduranboard.proboards86.com/ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Markuk (talkcontribs) 15:26, 21 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

The message board was removed because it is an unnecessary external link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guidelines for more information. Shadow1 (talk) 15:45, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bot archiving

[edit]

Please take a look at Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship. Although ShadowBot3 is said to be archiving to archive 88 at the top of the page, it's actually sending old messages to archive 86, and now archive 87 is older than archive 86. There's probably a simple process to fixing it, but I'm not sure how it's done, so please help out if you have a chance. Thanks! Dekimasuよ! 06:03, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, that's not the code that tells Shadowbot3 to archive pages. In order to specify where the bot archives to, you need to go down about 10 lines and look for the big HTML comment. Apparently no one noticed that the actual directive was set to archive 86, so I've changed it to archive 88. However, I have no idea how to sort out the mess that the bot made, as the archives seem to be a bit mangled. Shadow1 (talk) 12:02, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have deactivated the bot for that page for the moment; archiving based on time alone seems not good enough for this page, as the bot can't write a nice summary. Probably it's easiest to fix the bot problems by re-archiving from some specific oldid's. Kusma (talk) 14:38, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for addition to bot

[edit]

Hi there, people have been persistently trying to add http://www.antibodyresource.com/ to antibody and monoclonal antibodies for months now. Could you add this link to your bot list please? Thanks TimVickers 04:28, 23 April 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Adding

[edit]

Is the perlwikipediabot able to add content to the top of a page without modifying the bot framework's current source? For example, can I mark a page as uncategorized or for speedy deletion? Thank You.--eskimospy (talkcontribscount) 01:50, 24 April 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Can't you just use a get_text and a concatenation? Seems to be worthless to make a function for this, if you need one write it. ST47Talk 03:43, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with ST47. You should be able to use:

use Perlwikipedia;

my $editor=Perlwikipedia->new;

$editor->login($name,$pass);

my $page_text=$editor->get_text($pagename);

$page_text="stuff..." . $page_text;

$editor->edit($pagename,$page_text,$summary);

Shadowbot3 cat

[edit]

Given that it now appears that Werdna's absence is to be long-term if not permanent [2], it may be time to update [[User:Werdnabot/Archiver/Linkhere]] to put pages in Category:Discussion pages automatically archived by Shadowbot3 to reflect the practical reality. I did so and then realised that would mess things up if your Bot used the old cat to work out which pages to archive so reverted myself. Its probably an update that should happen when you have a moment ton do it properly though... WjBscribe 03:30, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm planning to write a series of scripts to transfer everything Werdnabot-related over to Shadowbot3 soon. Or just mirror all the old pages into the new cat and write new instructions. Either way, I'm working on a solution and should be ready to implement shortly after I can get my laptop working again. Shadow1 (talk) 19:20, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks for working on it- there's definitely no hurry though... WjBscribe 02:56, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ilyushin Il-86

[edit]

I am trying to update a lot of the Russian aviation articles, and am working on Ilyushin Il-86 at the present time. In updating the active aircraft list, I have used a well known and reputable online database at [4]. Shadowbot has reverted my edit saying that I am spamming? Firstly, I am not connected with aerotransport.org, so have nothing to gain from 'promoting' the website. Secondly, the links I have provided take a user directly to the relevant information, information which is up-to-date. Why is this bot telling me I am spamming? The bot edit is here. Regarding edits to Janet Gordon-Lennox, Countess of March and Kinrara

[edit]

Please check out the actual work done for the article "Janet Gordon-Lennox, Countess of March and Kinrara", and check out the differences.

I respectfully suggest that you delete/ removed those two sites from your list of sites to be blocked automatically.

Those two sites have been used as "References" and not as "External Links". They have been created by two genealogists Paul Theroff and Hein Bruins, and contain a lot of genealogical material indexed and referenced on several other Wikipedia pages (and websites created elsewhere by other genealogists). Those are the only freely available online sources for the original genealogical information for those interested.

Can shadowbot be limited to a particular page?

[edit]

Internet Censorship has an edit war going on with a controversial editor. He wants to put his web site in that particular article. Can Shadowbot be configured to autorevert his URL from just that article until he convinces the rest of the editors that the link needs to stay? See Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Limited-IP-address-range_semi-protect_bot and the links in it for some history. Davidwr 21:12, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, no, but I'll definitely see if I can write the functionality in soon. However, a linksearch shows that the link isn't particularly well-used, and since Shadowbot will only revert new/unregistered users by default, blacklisting this link temporarily would most likely have the desired effect. I'll work on a solution and get back to you. Let me know if this is the course of action that the editors wish to take. Shadow1 (talk) 21:18, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
After writing some fairly nifty code for this function, I've added savetheinternet.com to the bot's blacklist, modified the rule so that it will essentially "edit war," and locked the rule to Internet censorship. Please let me know if this malfunctions in any way. Shadow1 (talk) 21:51, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please de-blacklist this until the most of editors of that page say it is A Good Thing. My intent was to find out if it is possible before offering it up as a solution. I will post a link to your user page on Talk:Internet Censorship and see what people think. We may not need to use it if we can solve our problems on our own. It's nice to know it's technically possible though. BTW, I hope your bot will not blacklist the talk page. Davidwr 23:08, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the link from the blacklist. And no, the bot will only touch the actual article, it doesn't pay any attention to non-mainspace pages. Shadow1 (talk) 23:11, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Announced availability. See Talk:Internet censorship#Proposed bot to auto-revert anonymous edits that post the disputed link. If someone asks you to activate the link, ask them what the vote was :). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Davidwr (talkcontribs) 23:15, 4 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Jeffmcneill! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia.
