Administrators' newsletter – April 2020

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • There is an ongoing request for comment to streamline the source deprecation and blacklisting process.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold a Arbcom RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. A draft RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC (Draft) and not open to comments from the community yet. Interested editors can comment on the RfC itself on its talk page.

Miscellaneous

  • The WMF has begun a pilot report of the pages most visited through various social media platforms to help with anti-vandalism and anti-disinformation efforts. The report is updated daily and will be available through the end of May.

Auckland railway stations

[edit]

Re the List of Auckland railway stations, someone has "had a go" at it by altering some station names so that they appear as "redlinks" to stations supposedly in Wellington, Lower Hutt or the Wellington Region – but when/who?: Hugo999 (talk) 09:17, 10 April 2020 (UTC) PS: and to some station articles e.g. Ellerslie railway station re Penrose in infobox.[reply]

  • Southern Line
    • Newmarket (Wellington Region)
    • Penrose (Wellington Region)
  • Eastern Line
    • Panmure (Wellington Region)
  • Onehunga Line
    • Newmarket (Wellington Region)
    • Penrose (Wellington Region)
  • Western Line
    • Newmarket (Wellington Region)
    • Grafton (Lower Hutt)
    • Kingsland (Lower Hutt)
    • Morningside (Wellington Region)
    • Avondale (Wellington Region)
The problematic edit appears to be this one, but I suspect this is an error rather than vandalism.-gadfium 09:35, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[edit]

Hi (Schwede66), the last time i requested autopatrol permission ([here you declined it. So I requested here may be if you can grant the request. Much Regards (F5pillar -->(Let's talk) 09:05, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well, this is definitely the wrong place to apply for it. Schwede66 00:58, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Otaihunga railway station article

[edit]

I propose to make Otaihunga railway station a redirect to Otaihanga railway station and have put it on the WikiProject NZR list of tasks. Current spelling and also the spelling in WMR advertisements and in Douglas Hoy’s 1972 book on the WMR (p52,120). I do not have access to Ken Cassell’s "Uncommon Carrier" at present. What to do when a user keeps misusing the "minor edit" option

[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you also have left a message on the user page of Ojotaranios concerning that user's continual marking of non-minor edits as minor. These notices have apparently been disregarded. The user additionally appears to continue to engage in edit warring and/or tendentious behavior. I'm wondering which next steps should be taken, and I'm mainly just hoping that you're keeping an eye on the situation. BirdValiant (talk) 07:16, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@BirdValiant: personally, I get quite annoyed by non-minor edits marked as minor. But then I remind myself: will this stop Wikipedia being a brilliant project? Well, of course not. In fact, it doesn’t really matter (unless it’s done with malicious intent). If you’ve seen the long deleted note that I’ve left this user, you will have seen that I predict a short tenure. Minor edits won’t be their downfall so don’t get distracted by it. Schwede66 08:59, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you have time, could you take a look at this draft article? It seems very borderline notable to me but hard to determine as there are some reliable sources about her, although nothing in the last 2-3 years. TIA! MurielMary (talk) 11:27, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MurielMary: Another editor has already approved it so let’s see what will happen. Without reading the refs themselves, it looks ok. Notability isn’t temporary so it doesn’t matter if reporting stops at some point. Schwede66 18:18, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for having a look. You are right about past notability being notability still; I was thinking that there seemed to be only one notable event (the 10 Tenors tour) which would put the article into that "notable for one event" exclusion (there's a criteria around that for bios from memory). MurielMary (talk) 22:20, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's true. There seemed to be unrelated reporting (singing carols on a plane). Schwede66 22:34, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Verna Coutts

[edit]

Hi. Hope you are well. If you have a moment, I was wondering if you could find any more info on Verna Coutts, who played for the New Zealand women's cricket team in the 1950s? Cricinfo has her as still being alive, but Cricket Archive shows she died in January 2010. The latter is behind a paywall, but it does include her full name of Verna Reed Coutts, her married name of MacDonald, and that she worked as a radiographer at Wellington Hospital. Thank you. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:42, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lugnuts: Nothing jumps out, eh? A mention on the NZCricketMuseum website and beyond that nothing. Schwede66 19:00, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that was all I was able to find. Oh well, thanks for taking a second look. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 06:38, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. This is an invitation to join the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week. £250 (c. $310) is being given away in May, June and July with £20 worth of prizes to give away every week for most articles destubbed. Each week there is a different region of focus, including the last week dedicated to NZ and Oceania, though half the prize will still be rewarded for articles on any subject. There's a potential £120 to be won in total for destubbing on any subject or region of your choice. Sign up if you want to contribute at least one of the weeks or support the idea! † Encyclopædius 12:03, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking suggestions – Water in New Zealand

[edit]

Hi, I have posted a discussion starter on Talk:Water in New Zealand. However, this article has few watchers, and there has been little editing over many years. The article is rated as High importance, but is currently only at Start Class quality. I am willing to have a go at making significant improvements, but this seems like a big project, and I would prefer to have some collaborators, and to get consensus on direction. I don’t expect to get much reaction from the Talk page as things stand at present. Is there some way I can find other editors who might be interested in helping out ?Marshelec (talk) 22:01, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

awb script needs some work

[edit]

With this edit, your awb script wikilinked |title= in a {{cite news}} template when |url= in that same template has an assigned value which causes URL–wikilink conflict errors. Please fix your script.

Trappist the monk (talk) 10:52, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Trappist the monk: Thanks for the heads up. That's not my script failing (I wouldn't know how to teach it to not look within a specific parameter) but me not checking the suggested edit thoroughly enough before I hit the save button. Schwede66 21:11, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Queries relating to draft article - Rangitata Diversion Race

[edit]

Hi, I seek some brief feedback and help with a couple of points related to an article I am developing about the Rangitata Diversion Race. I hope you can help. Please see a link to the draft article and my questions on my talk page here: User talk: Marshelec#Help_with_Rangitata_Diversion_Race_draft_article Marshelec (talk) 21:28, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

[edit]

Hi Schwede66, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Arbitration

  • A motion was passed to enact a 500/30 restriction on articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. Article talk pages where disruption occurs may also be managed with the stated restriction.

New Zealand English

[edit]

I'm sorry about mispelling "traveller" as "traveler" on the New Zealand articles. I keep on forgetting. But I'll remember now to fix those issues. Andykatib 00:08, June 19, 2020 (UTC)

Hi

[edit]

Please don't be shady. You have a COI. cookie monster (2020) 755 19:59, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was rude. cookie monster (2020) 755 20:00, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@CookieMonster755: I'm sorry but WP:BEFORE simply is part of the process you go through before nominating at AFD. You even stated that you hadn't done it. If you aren't prepared to do the necessary background work first just don't nominate at AFD. You'd do yourself, and all other editors, a favour, as the time that you saved yourself by not doing a proper job is wasted several times over by others having to look into it. And, thus far, they have all come to the conclusion that you got it wrong. Which is exactly my point. Schwede66 20:13, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I never stated anything to you nor anyone. I simply asked you not to throw shade or be rude. Which you have done. I am thankful that you have provided resources to help me, but you could have done it with a better attitude. But again, this is the internet so maybe I misunderstood the tone you are using. I will try to be better about policy and guidelines regarding AfD but please don't be rude or throw shade. cookie monster (2020) 755 20:24, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Whether I got it wrong it not is not a justification for your poor attitude. cookie monster (2020) 755 20:25, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@CookieMonster755: My intention was not to upset you. Obviously, I have done so, hence I shall apologise. What my intention was is to let you know that WP:BEFORE is part of the process. If you have come to the conclusion that you've got this wrong, the correct thing to do is to withdraw the AfD so that others don't waste more time looking into it; WP:WDAFD gives instructions on how to do that. Howdy - more Campbell-Browne edit-warring from 90.207.98.44, maybe you can intervene. Cheers --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 22:40, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
