March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Order of gusuku

Hi - I just noticed we were both editing gusuku at the same time. I am not particularly fussed as to the order of the groupings (focus: Okinawa, Sakishima, Amami) or (alpha: Amami, Okinawa, Sakishima), so let me know which is preferred and I will standardise accordingly. Thanks. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 00:00, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

@Jabberjawjapan: Yes, I tried adding more castles but met edit conflicts. I originally had it ordered alphabetically by island, but if you group them by island group it makes sense to order island groups geographically.
I noticed you changed the islands from subheadings to bullets, except Okinawa, which looks uneven. As long as it looks even, I'm fine with whatever you change it to. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 00:18, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Yes - I did Okinawa last as it was the longest and needed most edit time. It should look ok now, and by condensing the groupings, the castles can now all be (hopefully) easily viewed and understood on one PC screen. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 00:28, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Kazoku title creation

Also for the post-1879 Marquess rank, the Kazoku page states that the title system was not created until 1884, hence Sho Tai could not (AFAIK) have been made a Marquess in 1879, so it could be (safely?) inferred he was therefore a generic Kazoku between 1879-1884. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 00:09, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

(edit conflict) I'll look into it and get back to you, but my sources about Shō Tai only indicate that he was given the Peerage rank of Marquis, presumably immediately. I'll try to find a dedicated source about the kazoku system. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 00:19, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
This source (http://www.unterstein.net/or/docs/JapanPeers.pdf) may help, but is partly written in French and some lists are noted as incomplete (and Sho Tai or Okinawa/Ryukyu does not seem to be included). Jabberjawjapan (talk) 00:58, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
@Jabberjawjapan: I speak French so it was no problem, but all this document tells me is that Shō Tai and his descendants weren't included in the House of Peers. Also, I did verify that Shō Tai received his rank of marquis in 1884, but I don't see that he was given a rank before then. Prince Ie and Prince Nakajin were "granted the status of peers in Japan" the day the kingdom was annexed, basically allowing them to keep their stipends, and they became barons in 1884. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 01:17, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
I have just altered some recent edits from today to match the dates. Hopefully this is ok - it is not my basic intention to unilaterally "kick open doors and stomp around someone else's house" so to speak, but merely make similar details on different pages consistent. Also, while we are here, should the 1884 date be referenced (as you cited) on these pages as well? Thanks. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 01:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
@Jabberjawjapan: It's totally fine and encouraged. And we can cite it, are you wanting the citation on the Shō Tai article or on another? Or both? ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 03:03, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Shō Tai should be fine, since he was the one affected by it all, where an appropriate reference to "Kerr page 397" would suffice. And why not add those other useful details (re Ie/Nakajin) too, since they seem helpful in explaining the transition process too. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 03:33, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Have just (boldly!) copied this section to Talk:Sho Tai where it seems the most relevant place to list/archive these details. Guess you could blank it here to free up some space then? Jabberjawjapan (talk) 03:39, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

@Jabberjawjapan: I keep everything on my Talk Page until I archive it, but it was more appropriate at the article talk page. You've visited Okinawa before, yes? ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 03:57, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Yes - 3x, most recently in the days before the explosion of edits to Shuri Castle. I find the "Ryukyuan" culture fresh & interesting, and easy to culturally access, after the everyday routine of life here on the mainland (in much the same way I guess, of people heading off to Hawaii from the continental US). Jabberjawjapan (talk) 04:21, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
@Jabberjawjapan: Well, it is good to have someone else interested in these articles. I've literally spent the last 5 years working on them, but I can still find something missing or wrong. I appreciate the help. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 04:47, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Statue of Peace

There seems to be a lot of news regarding this and other such statues going up around South Korea and maybe China. I guess Japan made another agreement regarding comfort women and then South Koreans put more statues. China is getting into the act - attempting to drive a wedge between South Korea and Japan? Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 07:00, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

@Jim1138: If China builds statues, I don't think it's related to South Korea except that maybe they got the idea from them. Are you talking about recent news? ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 12:37, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
Fairly recent news. I think China's involvement is calculated. Dividing South Korea and Japan would be to their benefit. The Japanese jp:慰安婦像 and Korean ko:평화의 소녀상 articles have a lot more content. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 20:02, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
@Jim1138: There is only a very small mention of China at all in the JaWP article, which only mentions a set of statues co-produced by China and Korea and that another one will be built in China in the future, and I don't speak Korean. There were plenty of Chinese women either raped or used as comfort women, and Japan has offered much less of an apology to China than to Korea, so they have good reason to build their own statues and other monuments. You are right to be suspicious of the CCP, but I'm not suspicious in this case. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 00:10, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Flag

Hello,

I noticed that you reverted someone removing the purported flag for the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom from that entity's article. Do you know if that flag is actually the flag of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom? I'm agnostic on the issue, as I haven't found anything on what the flag actually looks like in my reading yet.

Dbrote (talk) 22:36, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

@Dbrote: Hi, I was simply reverting an IP's unexplained removal of content, so I don't know if the flag was authentic or not. This can be further discussed at the article's talk page. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 23:01, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
