It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Hello Tim!, could you explain the removal of Germany-related categories in [1] and several other articles please? A lengthy CfD discussion in May/June 2015 about Germany vs. HRE ended as "no consensus". We have a completely functional category tree at Category:Establishments_in_Germany_by_decade for all years covering Germany's complete history - please keep the Germany-related categories intact. An additional HRE-timeline as categorization tree is certainly useful, but such categories can easily be implemented as additional categories to affected articles, or as additional categorization in the Germany-related categories themselves. GermanJoe (talk) 08:17, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can you link the CFD discussion please? Tim! (talk) 20:37, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Here and here are 2 discussions, some more (with varying results) are linked within the threads. I'll readily admit to be biased on that issue, but the notion that Germany didn't exist within the larger HRE or that Germany's history only starts with the 19th century is more misleading and ahistorical than a slight inaccuracy in terminology. Also most modern historians, acknowledged German and English experts alike, are well aware of this ambiguity, but still use "Germany" as clearest designation for the territory north of the Alps all the time. GermanJoe (talk) 15:18, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What would be the inclusion criteria of 1678 in Germany, the current borders of Germany? If so what are the inclusion criteria of 1878 in Germany - current borders or contemporary borders, because it is then ambigous whether you exclude, just with one example, anything that happened in those parts of Prussia which are now parts of other countries. Tim! (talk) 07:12, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would keep Prussia in a separate timeline for Prussia-related events (that's the current handling, afaik). But its role within the German Reich is clearly part of German history too, and such events equally belong in a Prussia- and Germany-related timeline. Prussia and Germany have overlapping topics, just as Germany and the HRE obviously have large overlaps in their histories. Frankly, I don't have a perfect solution either :), but I noticed that other country categories have similar ambiguities to a lesser degree. Maybe in the case of Germany the difficulties are just more visible, as "Germany" has no clear geographical border and the territorial composition changed several times. On a sidenote: whatever the community decides, it would be really helpful to add such "definitions" for complex categories to the main category's page as usage information. I.e. Category:1700s in Germany should have 1-2 brief sentences, how "Germany" is defined in that context for Wikipedia's categorization purpose. That would help new editors to use the category correctly and reduce the amount of miscategorizations (OK, at least a bit). GermanJoe (talk) 04:07, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would say that establishments in Germany pre-1800 is a highly questionable category scheme. A realistic use of the term would have to include Austria. Exclusion of Bohemia would be arbitrary. The Holy Roman Empire is the best way to reflect reality for this period in such categorization. We can call people German, but to say things are happening in Germany is to impose the present on the past. The support for use of the Germany term comes from debates about the 19th-century, not pre-19th-century events.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:08, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Arctic Fox Center Merge

[edit]

You put a merge tag on The Arctic Fox Center and Arctic Fox Centre back in May. There have been no comments. I believe this to be a non-controversial merge, as they are clearly about the same place, and the Web site uses "Center" rather than "Centre". I have just finished the merge. Hopefully I didn't forget something --- its been a while since I did a merge. Don Lammers (talk) 23:20, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with years/country categories

[edit]

Hi, Tim!,
I've been working through Wikipedia:Database reports/Red-linked categories with incoming links and most of the red-linked categories involve "Year in Country" type categories. After going through a lot of these, I can see over time how much work you've put into organizing this area. I've also noticed that there are probably a dozen different template/category assignments that have been placed on the category page over the years and it's gotten more stream-lined over time.
I ran into a problem with Category:Establishments in Macau by decade with some of the categories calling the area Portuguese Macau and some Macau and it doesn't seem related to the time period where Macau was a Portuguese colony. I thought of looking for help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Macau, Portuguese Macau and History of Macau but it doesn't seem like much activity going on on the talk pages.
Assuming that you have learned a lot about territories, names and history while creating this category structure, I was wondering if you can help sort this out...I guess I'm asking whether all of the Year in Macau categories prior to 1999 need to be renamed Year in Portuguese Macau or if you could point me in the direction of an editor who could tell me how to clear this up. I don't want to make a proposal at CfD that isn't accurate. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 17:55, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Liz, I'll have a look at this and have a think about what might be the best course of action, regards Tim! (talk) 07:11, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
we had the problem with Netherlands east indies and Indonesia, but not much discussion on the issue. The cutoff date of the 1940s from one to the other, and also the issue of whether the dutch project or the indonesian project might be the parent project as opposed to categories. Have a look it might give you both some ideas. JarrahTree 07:17, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
oops, maybe I dont understand what happened after all (I do a lot of project tagging, and a lot less category work, which might have contributed to my misunderstanding), we might have had some items netherlands east indies as part of dutch project, and some might have been assumed into indonesian. I hope one or other of you might offer further info on the issue. cheers JarrahTree 00:25, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hanover/Kingdom of Hanover

[edit]

My first thought is to keep the Kingdom of Hanover category. My first reason to say this is that when you do the establishment category for country it creates a link to the article in the heading. The problem is that the article on Hanover is about the city of that name, not the kingdom.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:01, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
