Hi Veej!

[edit]

Hammy or HS is fine. Thats a very good question you have there! There is a line (somewhere handy I'm sure) that states in essence "do not contribute unless you have no problem with your work potentially being mercilessly edited, scrutinized, altered, deleted and alternately exaulted or spit upon(in a figurative sense, of course!). I must admit to you, although I do a fair bit of editing, I stay almost exclusively with text, images are not my bag at all! The brilliant thing about this WP is that you can always find another editor to collaborate with, whose strengths best compliment your own, which is how I've been able to operate as an editor. The information you added to Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by fields of interest, well thats in that list now for all to see. There is a watch page tab at the top of every Wikipedia page. By clicking it you can track that page on your "Special watchlist" page. That holds all the pages you are watching for changes. Also,if you look in the section right above the "show preview" and "Save" buttons on the pages you contribute too, you will find a small box that says "watch this page" and it performs the same function. By clicking that box, you will be able to subsequently find the page easily, and you will also be able to track new additions to it from other users. If it hadn't been for you, I would never have found it (the List) in all likelihood, and I was able to add my own particulars there. So, thanks! One word of advice, if I may, is that you use the preview button before you save, just to see what the page you have been working on will look like in WP space. Another thing is, there is a box below the text box on pages you edit, for leaving an edit summary. Please use it to leave a short description of your most recent edit, or change, or addition. It makes life a lot easier for the people who are checking these types of additions for vandalism. Veej, I hope I have been of some help to you, of course, feel free to ask my assistance whenever you want. If I can't help, I can usually steer you in the right direction. See you 'round the wiki! Hamster Sandwich 05:51, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, Veej! Anything I can do to help is a pleasure for me. Happy editing! Hamster Sandwich 06:15, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of 'green wikipedians' category

WPians by philosophy

[edit]

Those categories are factionalizing - they have a tendency of splitting the 'pedia into certain factions that feel hostility towards one another. And that is a bad thing. They encourage people to, in a conflict, tag in a couple of like-minded people to shout down the opposition, rather than discuss what the problem actually is about. And we have too much of that already. Radiant_>|< 14:19, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And they have been used to organize (successful) drives to keep clearly POV categories. Two I've noticed recently are Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2005_November_24#Category:Pro-life_politicians and WP:CFD#Pro-choice_and_pro-life_celebrities. "Pro-life" is an intentionally POV term, now plastered on hundreds of wikipedia articles in the name of "categorization". Nominations to delete such categories are met with organized resistance, facilitated by the existence of Category:Pro-Life Wikipedians. To be fair, I didn't just single out this category, but all subcats of Category:Wikipedians by politics. I haven't seen others of them used in this way (from my own POV, I think I'd be less likely to notice), but the possibility for such abuse is clear. And, if they're used to rally votes at CFD, and users become aware of this technique, I think it is very likely the same technique will become common at AFD (if it isn't already) and even in article content disputes. IMO - organized POV pushing is far more dangerous to wikipedia than vandalism. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:12, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It seems somewhat pointless, but sure I'll add a comment on the CFD page. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:27, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Radiant, i may come across as patronising. i don't mean to. i don't think you should be too disappointed about the lack of support. effectively, this is about the use of categorization of wikipedians in general. removal of that, is bound to be an uphill struggle because of the sheer number of wikipedians that have categorized themselves. however some excellent points have been made and serious problems highlighted. how do we deal with POV fuelled mis-application of categories? how do we deal with factionalization? regardless of which side has most support, these problems still need solutions. the debate has stalled of late & become one sided, which is a shame because that brings us no closer to solutions. i totally disagree that further comment is pointless. Your vote has been cast, but your debate can rage on. Veej 00:51, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Top level priority

[edit]

I don't really know how that list came about, and I actually happen to like "dry" topics like those listed, but yes, more topics related to contemporary Indian culture would be great. You should of course feel free to nominate additional topics. Tom Radulovich 16:15, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The talk page of Wikipedia:Notice board for India-related topics seems to me to be the most appropriate place to start a discussion. Tom Radulovich 21:14, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The idea behind WP:INCOTW is to raise the level of articles to FA status. The article is decided by consensus/voting. However, lately there hasn't been very active participation, and we haven't been able to raise any articles to FA status. I think more active participation of more people in both selection of articles and their improvement on INCOTW will address most of your concerns. deeptrivia (talk) 05:11, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Veej. Bollywood or more inclusively Cinema in India would be a great article to bring it up for FA status. Would be glad to help you, if you take an initiative and propose it for INCOTW. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:48, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The topics mentioned are more peoples general preferences then anything else. You are free to propose more topics and/or simply work on them. You can always ask for help on any article that you might be working on, both on the India notice board talk page or on peoples talk pages. kaal 20:22, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Priority

[edit]

Top level priority would mean core India topics. Topics which attract a lot of attention. Topics such as the History of India; Flora and Fauna of India, major cities, states etc. This does not mean that topics on Bollywood should be neglected, if you would like to bring up Bollywood etc to featured status, by all means please do so. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:33, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CfD: Wikipedians by politics

[edit]

Per your request, I have expounded further on my "delete" vote in the Wikipedians by politics category. I am not opposed to the category per se, but I think that the category can be used as a tool which can damage the more democratic ideals of the Wikipedia. Of course, you can always fight pro-this categories with pro-that categories, but that kind of escalation should best be avoided. JRP 17:09, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Muslim Boycott

[edit]

Because the article is not about the boycott. The Boycott is relevant and needs to be mentioned, and the external references to BBC articles are relevant to that sub-issues.

However, by placing entire transcripts in the encyclopedia entry, your edit completely dominated the article, giving the issue far more coverage than the actual day that the article is supposed to be about! This is an encyclopedia, not a political issues debate forum.

I did not erase your entry - I moved it to the discussion page, where it is more appropriate. Some of the external links can and likely should be be worked back into the section on the boycott.

You may wish to include the material elsewhere. Perhaps the issue deserves it's own article? But a side-issue to the actual event should not "crowd out" the topic which the article is about. - Beowulf314159 15:28, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It should not be ignored, and it has not been ignored. Many of the links have been written back in by other authors as I suggested they probably should. If the issue is such a controversial one, perhaps it deserves it's own article, but I repeat, a "side issue" should not dominate the topic of the main article. At the very most large related issues should have a brief mention in one article, with a follow up article of their own. - Beowulf314159 16:55, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion ?

[edit]

What do you want to discuss ? Should we discuss Jamaat Islami page ? Should we discuss your daily addition to anti-Muslim propaganda in Wikipedia ? Or should we discuss 2002 Gujarat violence ?

Siddiqui 04:52, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a personal attack. I asked basically to know your motives. Are you motivated by hate or love. Are you interested in peace and justice or just propaganda. That is the basis of my question. If you are motivated by hate of Muslims then we don't have anything to discuss since you have already made up your mind. If you are motivated by peace and justice then you should also add links about violence in Gujarat at all Wikipedia related pages. Do you understand my reasoning.
Siddiqui 05:07, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you are ... interested intellectual critism of individuals, organisations & concepts. then may be you can also take some time and have some "intellectual" criticism of "individuals, organisations & concepts" involved in 2002 Gujarat violence. I just want you to judge your own motives. Clearly you are only motivated by anti-Muslim propaganda.
Siddiqui 05:21, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You said: I am interested intellectual critism of individuals, organisations & concepts. So my question is why Jamaat Islami fits this mold but not 2002 Gujarat violence ? Why are you so much interested in Jamaat Islami ? Your Page says that you like Gujarati food that is why I brought up the issue of 2002 Gujarat violence. But you are avoiding the issue. I am ready and willing to discuss all issue with you including Jamaat Islami. But may be you explain you real motives then we can proceed.
Siddiqui 05:36, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why are you interested in Jamaat Islami ?
  • Why are you not interested in discussing 2002 Gujarat violence ?

Siddiqui 05:43, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • You said I spend a lot of time searching the net looking for intellectual critisms. Why do you think that genocide in your Gujarat state does not interest you ? Is that not intellectual ? Why is Jamaat Islami seems very intellectual for your taste ? Your motives are clearly spreading anti-Mulim propaganda. May be you should read each line of 2002 Gujarat violence before you discuss Jamaat Islami with me.

Siddiqui 05:54, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • You said I know nothing about the Gujarat riots Why is that ? Is Jamaat Islami a sexy babe compared to ugly Gujarat genocide ? This subject is not intellectual for you ?

Siddiqui 05:58, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Clearly, your motives are even clear to yourself. You have never contributed Jamaat Islami page before yesterday and now just want eager to add some propaganda. But you say that you are not interested in genocide in your own state ! You don't know anything about it or care to tell me your thoughts on this subject.

Siddiqui 06:08, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You could request assistance from the village pump. If his behavior continues to be disruptive you can request administrator assistance and/or file an RfC. Usually I get more involved in disputes, but I have a fever so I'm steering clear of getting involved here. All the best. - RoyBoy 800 18:17, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Boy, Siddiqui has been a nightmare since hes arrived in December. I've been bogged down, policing his edits to India related articles. IHe unlike other vandals adds subtle misinformation to articles under guise of Pakistani perspective. I could write a book on his vandalisms here. Would help you with the RfC, but i'll be taking a Chemistry GCSE on 10th, so will be busy till then.

category

[edit]

To create a category, just put "Category:Your category name" (without the quotes) into the search bar and click "Go". Then click "Create this article." Give a short description of the article, and put it in a higher level category in the same way you would put a page in. Then, you can add pages to the category and they'll show up in it. For more info see Wikipedia:Categorization.

As far as the specific category you're suggesting I would highly advise you not to create it as it is inflammatory and will likely be deleted. Your choice though. Peace, --Urthogie 21:15, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See someone beat me here, I'd just like to ditto Urthogie. That particular category sounds like a bad idea™ Creating categories in general is, as explained, just like creating any other page though, it just have to start with "Category:" to do it's magic. Adding a category link to a category page makes it a sub category of the "linked" category. Other than the namespace prefix (Category:) there are no other technical naming issues, but there are numerous naming conventions that should be followed (see how ralated categories are named). And again, the "Wikipedians censored by Islamist editors" category you outlined is probably a bad idea, spend some time watching WP:CFD debates to get a feel for what is acceptable and not in the category namespace. --Sherool (talk) 22:31, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Easy there boy, i've seen too many people banned on the charge of "Islamophobia" to think any good will come out of it. You may not have a category, but still you can have a "Sub-User Page" like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Veej/Islamists where people can possibly vent their feelings as to whether they are being bullied by extremists or not.

अमेय आर्यन DaBroodey 05:15, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Linda Smith

[edit]

Thanks for your message about Linda Smith and her use of the word Satan. Your concern for the family is admirable, but with respect I don't think it applies, for two reasons: I see no reason to think they would find the debate objectionable even if they happened to stumble across them on the Talk page, which isn't that likely; and Wikipedia is not in the business of stifling (or hiding) reasonable debate in order to spare anyone's feelings. As for whether it should stay, that must depend on whether it can be verified, as is the case for anything on Wikipedia. I really don't see how it can be, unless you could turn up some comment by Smith or a close contact confirming that the concept of the devil was more "figurative" to her (whatever that would mean in practice) because she was a humanist -- which seems pretty unlikely. Otherwise, it's just your interpretation, which might well be perfectly valid and interesting, but is not the business of an encyclopaedia. Also, there's every chance that it will be deleted later on by some unconnected person coming across it, unaware of this discussion. At the very least it needs to be made clear what is meant, because after all it is quite a subtle point. I do sympathise with your affection for the phrase, something we've all felt I expect, and no doubt it's harmless enough in the great scheme of things; but I do feel the encyclopaedic principles should prevail, rather than the luck of the draw, in terms of the next person to comment -- sporting though your offer is! Why so few Wikipedians are engineers?

[edit]

I am trying to understand why there are so few Wikipedians who are graduate engineers. Once I get a grasp on that, perhaps I may be able to formulate some ideas on how to attract more experienced engineers to become Wikipedians. It would be very helpful if you would respond to these a few questions:

  • Are you a university graduate engineer?
  • Please indicate in which of these engineering disciplines you obtained your degree:
    1. Aeronautical or aerospace engineering
    2. Bioengineer or biological engineering
    3. Chemical engineering
    4. Civil engineering
    5. Electrical engineering
    6. Environmental engineering
    7. Mechanical engineering
    8. Petroleum engineering
    9. Other
  • In what year did you obtain your degree?
  • What attracted you to participate in Wikipedia?

If you would rather not answer these questions on your Talk page, then you may respond on my User talk:mbeychok page. Or you may respond to me via Wikipedia's email which I have enabled on my User:mbeychok page.

If you would rather not respond at all, that's fine also. Regards, - mbeychok 04:28, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

London Wikimedia Fundraiser

[edit]

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 00:09, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on User:Rabhyanker, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. [edit]

Hi Veej,

In the last several months, you've participated in a discussion on Talk:Zoë Quinn about which preferred gender pronouns to use in the article. So I thought I'd give you a heads up that I'm starting a WP:RFC to hopefully resolve this issue! You can find the relevant discussion here.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Jin Air, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page CAA. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Re-TROS moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Re-TROS, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Modussiccandi (talk) 15:46, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A quick google of the band shows me that there is better coverage out there. Please use some of that and try not to use social media sites for references. Best wishes, Modussiccandi (talk) 15:48, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Re-TROS

[edit]

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted.
