Shortcomings of article

[edit]

No time to fix them myself right now, but here are a couple of areas for work:

  • The article says that becoming a missionary "required that Max get a graduate degree in Bible and have at least two years experience ministering to a church." This statement badly needs a source, as there is no indication who/what "required" this. The churches of Christ have no centralized authority making these sorts of decisions, so the only possibilities would be (a) some specific congregation or organization had these requirements or (b) Lucado himself felt these preparations were necessary or (c) that's what actually happened before he succeeded in being sent as a missionary by a congregation.
  • The present version of the article doesn't give any sense of how he went from being the author of one collection of columns (On the Anvil), to being a missionary and author living in Brazil, to being minister of the Oak Hills Church and nationally known and praised (cf. the CT "America's Pastor" item and the as-yet-unmentioned listing in Reader's Digest as "America's Best Preacher" or something similar - think this was 2005 or maybe 2004). Without this information, many will assume naturally that Lucado's rise as an author took place after he came back to the U.S. However, if you check the timeline, the first two and possibly three books were published while he was still a missionary.

Just some thoughts that I'll research next week if no one else has done it by then. Lawikitejana 15:00, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And a degree in "Bible is vague. Theology, maybe? Or ministy, counseling, etc.? -- 12.116.162.162 18:00, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, "Bible," rather than Theology, is the title used by many evangelical schools to describe this general area of study. This reflects a suspicion of academic theology and an appeal to plain sense of scripture as the authority for the church. (Mark Noll is an interesting read on the issue of evangelical suspicion of academics, if you are interested.) In any case, Lucado's web site says his MA is in Biblical and Related Studies.131.238.31.40 14:33, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Another shortcoming of the article is the mention of the change in the Oak Hills Church of Christ to Oak Hills Church in 2003, without mentioning how instrumental Max and his choice to stop pretending to believe in baptism was in this decision. Max could not very well keep making fun of the Church of Christ as wanting to throw people off of the Fellow-ship to get them baptized if he continues preaching for a church that shared that designation. Grace without obedience is a much more popular message, and will sell a LOT more books. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cnjmorris75 (talkcontribs) 19:25, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Revamp

[edit]

I am working to make this article easier to read. Adding books that are missing, education information, missing biography information. I have added information about his books, and will continue to add more information as I have time. Looking for standard bibliography. I am also wanting to add an awards section.Flofor15 (talk) 17:05, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
