Peter Agre is an Eagle Scout, as are both of his brothers.

Last Name

[edit]

How is his last name pronounced? It is \'äg-rē\ in the phonetic alphabet of Merriam-Webster? Could it be \'ā-gər\?Patchouli 19:27, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is pronounced "ah-gree", like the name "Audrey" but with a G.

Shameless Eagle Scout plug removed

[edit]

I have removed the following sentence from the text: "There are four known Nobel Prize laureates who are Eagle Scouts: Agre and Dudley R. Herschbach for chemistry, and Robert Coleman Richardson and Frederick Reines for physics." The sentence is about Eagle Scouts, not Peter Agre, and doesn't belong here any more than does a list of all Nobelists from Johns Hopkins. The article gives ample attention to the fact that Agre was an Eagle Scout, and more comprehensive information is available at List of notable Eagle Scouts.

I will remove the similar text (no doubt inserted by the same author) from the articles about Herschbach, Richardson and Reines. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.232.225.7 (talkcontribs)

Well, at least whomever put it in there had the guts to get an account and sign their talk page entries. Sumoeagle179 23:14, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mentioning in the article that Agre is an Eagle Scout is appropriate. Mentioning that one of his brothers was also an Eagle Scout is questionable, but there's nothing wrong with including this information. Using this fact as an excuse to list other prominent Eagle Scouts is going off on a tangent, which is not appropriate. That information belongs in another article -- which, as I noted, already exists and already contains the information. My edit was thus proper.
Making a proper edit is what users are supposed to do and has nothing to do with "guts". My edit reflected no personal interests of mine (I respect Eagle Scouts as much as anyone else), yet you took it personally and lashed out against me in response. I note for the record that you also emailed the same comment directly to me mere moments after I made my edit. I hold Eagle Scouts in high enough esteem to expect better from them than this.
The fact that you wish I hadn't made this correction is no cause for a personal attack against me. Even an improper edit would not justify a personal attack; at most it would warrant a correction along with a note about why the correction was appropriate.
Your comment also violates the Wikipedia policy against biting newcomers.
Your desire to promote the Eagle Scouts is commendable, but it doesn't justify twisting Wikipedia's purposes in order to further that agenda. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.232.225.116 (talkcontribs)
You seem to think I'm the one that put that info on the pages, but I'm not (read the article history pages). I did not email you, I posted on your talk page. You seem to know a lot about wiki for a "newbie" and so you should know to sign your entries, even if you're using an anonymous account. Sumoeagle179 12:15, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He is now back at Johns Hopkins University. He is director of the Malaria research institute and a professor in molecular microbiology and immunology program at the Bloomberg school of public health. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.22.29.72 (talkcontribs)
