Trailer Music

[edit]

I saw the trailer for Sunshine this afternoon, and I'm certain that the music is actually Marion Barfs - though it is indeed from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. I'm certain of this, but I'd prefer for someone to confirm this before I changed it. Thanks, Cipher (Talk to the hand) 20:25, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cipher, I saw the actual movie a few days ago, and it appears that Requiem For A Dream is only played on the trailer.Stylus 11:26, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the confusing thing is that there isn't a single trailer. I saw a couple of them, with different theme songs. Actually I'm trying to find what song was used for Not Alone trailer ([1]). I've tried browsing the net - no answers. Any clues? Wyglif SMS 11:54, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The music from the trailer I saw was very similar to the main theme from the movie "The Edge." 65.184.187.76 (talk) 03:30, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just for closure, the piece is called Requiem for a Tower, and is a remixed version of Lux Æterna from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. The remix was originally created for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers trailer, and used since in many different trailers and idents. drewmunn (talk) 08:18, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Famous Progression"

[edit]

if the Adagio progression is so famous, how about telling us WHAT it IS?! wiki routinely goes into gory detail with every last chord change for lengthy nicki minaj or rihanna songs, but here where it's only 4 chords and "famous"?? cmon, someone pls post it!

btw, i believe "god is an astronaut" by dark rift and "dark waltz" by haley westenra are also basically this same progression. but i'll leave it to someone with a better ear than myself to confirm before adding to the list. 67.150.83.156 (talk) 00:07, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are a few issues here, mostly stemming from two sources. Firstly, should the "gory detail" be included in every song? I personally doubt it, but I see your point. In this article's case, Adagio's progression is fairly important to the context of a major section of content. For that reason, I think there is probably grounds for inclusion. The second issue is the potentially huge and ungainly list currently forming in the article regarding the track. I'm currently in the process of rewriting much of the article (updating references, restructuring to improve readability and article coherency), so some cleanup of the list will occur. I've lost count of the times I've heard renditions of Adagio (and other tracks, in fact) used in fairly notable works, so some of the more minor uses may need to be removed to avoid over-expansion in the future. I'm padding out other parts of the article, however, to help develop it into a larger and more encyclopaedic account of the album, thereby reducing the overall percentage that the list inhabits. I may invite the WP:LAUNDRY lot over to look over it, and see what they say once I've had a go at trimming it into something cohesive; they can work wonders. drewmunn (talk) 12:38, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
i'll agree with all of that. have a listen to god is an astronaut, tho - that goes beyond "sampling"; i thought it was the same damn clip until i listened back and forth!
i have NO EAR for music, or i'd post the progression myself. isn't it something basic like I-IV(5)-I-V7(2)?
btw, i'm still confused over what exactly CONSTITUTES "the adagio" -- is that just the "theme" of all these works? i mean, even in sunshine it sits as a SUBTITLE to 2 distinct pieces. so what's on that remastered disk exactly?
or is the adagio yet a THIRD ("pure") version, on which these 2 (as well as the 5 on kick-ass) are all seperately BASED?
rly confusing! 67.150.84.226 (talk) 18:22, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can't claim to be much of a musician (I'm limited to basic score arrangement), so I'll find an expert floating around in a wikiproject. The remastered edition is a carbon-copy of the track Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor) with the annoying voice-over removed, and mastering. Kanada's death Part II (Adagio in D Minor) is a remix of Sunshine, so would be worth a mention in the other uses section if it weren't on the same album. My reworking of the page puts the track listing in a table similar to the one used in other soundtrack pages, so this fact can be mentioned alongside the relevant tracks. See this track listing as an example of using the notes section to mention variations upon themes. drewmunn (talk) 21:01, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
ok, so what do all THESE correspond to then? http://www.google.com/#hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=Kick+Ass+Soundtrack+-+Hit+Girl+Rescue+Scene&oq=Kick+Ass+Soundtrack+-+Hit+Girl+Rescue+Scene
nothing in the kick ass score (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kick-Ass:_Music_from_the_Motion_Picture#The_Score) with quite the right name, and none of the 5 adagio derivatives even CLOSE to the right length! is that, in fact, the SUNSHINE ORIGINAL despite the caption/graphics?
btw, intro paragraph there indicates only ONE piece in kickass (strobe) comes from the adagio, whereas THIS article lists 5! wassupwiddat?!
in any case, i tried strobe (despite the length diff), but no, it is definitely NOT the same as the ones labeled "Hit Girl Rescue Scene" above.
sigh. i suppose i'm going to have to download ALL 8 (?) VERSIONS to sort this out once and for all.... 67.150.81.180 (talk) 06:58, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've got all of the derivatives listed, and it seems to me that this is the layout:
  • Sunshine is the original Adagio in D Minor.
  • Kanada's Death Part II is the first derivative.
  • Kick Ass is full of at least a million other derivatives. I debate the relevance of Flying Home as a derivative. However, I think that it may end up with one sentence saying "Many tracks in Kick Ass are derivatives of Adagio".
  • The original Adagio is the most used version in other works.
  • A few other tracks on the Sunshine album are used in other works.
Not even the Requiem for a Tower entry is this complex, and that's used by everyone. Once I'm done with this article, I may look at cleaning the Kick Ass one as well. drewmunn (talk) 12:21, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
looks much nicer now; i would just tweak it to add "in at least 5 seperate pieces" or "many tracks" or some sort of yardstick to that "john murphy reused" line. and maybe add "heavily" to reused.
also, is it accurate to say that anything is a variation on kanada's theme? if that is ultimately a variation on "sunshine" itself, can't all the others (incl the 5+ in kick-ass) be considered direct variants? i haven't heard kanada yet, so i suppose there's something unique to it, but i dunno. explanation above seems at odds to me.
put another way, the paragraph you wrote in the article is CLEAR, but the explanation ABOVE is MUCH CLEARER! might wish to ponder.
anyway, hope i'm not whining. you did a great job and i look forward to the kick-ass upgrade. oh, and btw (asking again) WHICH of all those versions do those "rescue scene" youtubes correspond to?!
Sorry, never got around to answering that one! The rescue scene music from YT seems to be an unreleased track, so it's technically another variant for the list! There's no telling how many pieces were actually used in the film, so all we have to go by is the OST, which, in some cases, contains barely half of the total tracks used. I'll add a bit in saying that he heavily reused, as that doesn't quantify, but shows that it was a lot. Kanada's Death Pt. 2 is the first of the 'variants' to add the guitar that is prominent in much of the later variants, so I consider them to be a strand, whilst other tracks use the guitar-less Sunshine variant (the original) as a basis. It's not for me to say whether this is or isn't true (that'd be OR), so I'll maybe look at clarifying the fact that everything's a variant on Adagio. Thanks for your feedback. drewmunn (talk) 17:09, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
ANOTHER variant?! egads. this guy should be BANNED from ever playing those 4 chords again! (you don't suppose that 18 month delay over copyright issues was b/c he accused HIMSELF of plagiarism...??)
and i'd be surprised if the "score" album really did lack much. there are 39 entries, after all! (17 of which written or co-written by murphy)
i'm still open to the idea that that "rescue scene" clip is among the other 16. but it's defintiely not #28, "strobe", despite various things implying it is. 67.150.83.65 (talk) 23:22, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Having re-listened to the YT track whilst watching the page (for the first time), I finally realised that it's not actually 3:58 long. At 2:58 in length, the YT track is a perfect match for Kanada's Death Pt. 2, so that's what it is. I shall endeavour to re-watch the scene in Kick-Ass (I may re-watch the entire thing), but I don't believe this track was used raw in any part of the film. It turns out that Shazam recognises the Kick-Ass soundtrack (but not the Sunshine one), so I'll see if I can Shazam it and get a clean enough rip to see what track it is in the scene. drewmunn (talk) 08:33, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just finished watching Kick-Ass again, and as far as I can tell, Kanada's Death Pt. 2 doesn't appear in it anywhere at all. There are plenty of variations of Adagio throughout, some of which I'm sure aren't on the soundtrack, but they sound similar to ones that are. This could be because they were remixed for the final edit of the film, or because they were deemed unnecessary inclusions because they sound similar. Basically, it seems that someone got confused when hearing Kanada's Death Pt. 2, thought it was Strobe, and they uploaded it to YT just to confuse us. drewmunn (talk) 13:23, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(Side note, I've done as you suggested and added 'heavily' to the sentence, and added a clarifying phrase.) drewmunn (talk) 13:26, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
lol. bear in mind i've seen NEITHER film, and only discovered this clip while looking for BARBER'S adagio!
but i liked it so much that i had to know who the composer was. that's where the trouble began. :P
btw, one more tweak: i would restore "[adagio]...with its DISTINCTIVE 4-CHORD PROGRESSION" or the like. especially if someone is going to fill in what that progression IS at some point.
even before i went googling/wikiing, i was asking around about "that progression" specifically. 67.150.84.102 (talk) 17:11, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, good point, it shall return imminently. I'd recommend Sunshine, it's an excellent film. Kick-Ass is good, but not anywhere near Sunshine's level. drewmunn (talk) 17:19, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
i finally SAW the FILM! (same anon as above but new IP these days). in any case, just wanted to mention that i've heard the theme in 2 new things lately (2013). one I forget (not a samsung ad)...the other a PSA, of all things! save water, stop forest fires, sumpin ladat. it played a lot about 6 months ago; i should have posted this while it was still fresh in memory.
either way, there's a NEW kid in town -- piano track from "hall of fame" (rap song). heard that in a couple ads and several OTHER rap songs since it first came out. (in my day this was known as "plagiarism"....)
i dunno what "requiem for a tower" is, btw - i'll have to check that out. i thought the real king of reuse was o fortuna? isn't that in like 98% of all action movies ever made?!  ;) 209.172.25.14 (talk) 19:26, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good film, isn't it? Anyway, Requiem for a Tower is from the Two Towers trailer, and is in turn based on a track called Requiem for a Dream. You've no doubt heard the RfaT theme around even without knowing what it was. O Fortuna's coming back into fashion as well lately, after a dip for a few years, but it's similarly overused.  drewmunn  talk  20:32, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
good film, except that i keep thinking "solaris" as the title, so I ended watching ALL FOUR films back-to-back....one in russian no less....
here's SNL's take on sunshine (or solaris...or alien...or 2001...or...): http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/mars-mission/n27709
rly dumb skit but TOTALLY cracks me up! 209.172.25.14 (talk) 03:56, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

any particular reason pt 2 comes before pt 1 in the score? does the movie involve TIME TRAVEL? 67.150.81.223 (talk) 21:16, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, there's no time travel! I can but assume that they... Um, maybe they... It could be that... Sorry! Not a clue. I'd have to rewatch the see if they're in 1-2 order or 2-1, but I think they're 1-2. Saying that, the closing piece of music in The Dark Knight Rises is the fourth-to-last in the the soundtrack, so it's not limited to Sunshine. drewmunn (talk) 21:37, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
if it were 2 pop pieces on some affiliated "soundtrack" album, i wouldn't think twice about it (trying to push the big single as last song, etc), but where this is the "score" full of all the little background snippets, i simply ASSUMED they're laid out in the right order. what would be the motivation for jumbling the order of dozens of 1-2 minute long instrumental clips?! 67.150.81.150 (talk) 02:28, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I assume that a cat sat on a keyboard somewhere and jumbled the order. There is little logic behind the listing at all, with tracks like Avenue of Hope, which comes from the credits, being track 2 on the album overall. Granted, there is a little login here an there; the first track on the album is then opening scene, and the climactic music is second-to-last, followed by the first credit track. drewmunn (talk) 08:28, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

January 2013 Taskforce

[edit]

Hello All! I've just completed a rewrite/shuffle/cleanup. However, there's still work to do. I'd appreciate it if you'd help bring the article up to spec. Below are the changes/additions that'd be good:

  • List cleanup. The Adagio list is still ungainly, but I've swapped a bit into prose. More of the list needs trimming, and it'd be great if you could help convert the general content of the list into more prose. We don't need every example of Adagio's use, and prose would be more acceptable. I'd suggest making prose out of extremely notable uses, or group-able instances.
  • More release info. A little more possibly on the release of the soundtrack. I can't think of anything else to add, but if there are any glaring omissions, please do add to it.
  • More in the Other media section. There's not much in here at all outside the Adagio stuff, but if you can find citable uses, it'd be great to pad that section out as well. I know of a few uses, but trying to find citations is proving a little difficult. I'm sure the collective will prevail!
  • Critical reaction. If anyone can find any reliable reviews of the album, then a Critical reaction section wouldn't go amiss. I'll add this section in comment, so if you come across anything, you can add it in and remove the commenting.
  • Any error correction. I'm far from perfect, so please correct any mistakes in my edit; there's bound to be at least one. I'm specifically weary that I may have missed some notes in the track listing. If there are any tracks that have quotes mixed over that I haven't mentioned in the notes, please can you add them? I didn't have time to sit through the entire album, but I scrubbed through, and I'm pretty sure I've found them all.

Finally, if you've got any more information, citations, or content that you think is appropriate, please do add it. Hopefully we can pad the article out with notable information, and squeeze down the ungainly list. Thanks. drewmunn (talk) 15:07, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

first and foremost: cud someone PULLLLLEASE add what the progression...IS?!
i still think it's something like I-IV/I-I-V7/VII, but I have a lousy ear (and no keyboard to fiddle with atm). 209.172.25.14 (talk) 19:52, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
