This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 17:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MILHIST B-class checklist

[edit]

This article has a few issues; first, the photograph needs to be moved to avoid text sandwiching. It also appears to be using an outdated infobox, the current version should be used instead:

Assam Rifles

. It also needs to be separated into sections, and additional referencing, as well as in-line citations. Parsecboy (talk) 23:42, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

[edit]

Assam Rifles is a Paramilitary Force whereas Assam Regiment is an Infantry Regiment and part of the Indian Army.

The Gurkha Hats talked about in the talks section are worn by both, however the pictures in question are in fact that of the Assam Regiment soldiers in the their green summer drill rig and angola shirt winter drill rig. Both wear the same combat rig and are pretty much indistinguishable in Full Combat rig. The Assam Rifles drill rig consists of a cloth called Mazari. It is a shade of grey. Despite being a paramilitary force, it is officered by the officers on deputation from the Indian Army, therefore operates on the similar lines as the Indian Army and shares its ethos. This perhaps explains the huge number of gallantry awards accrued by the force which makes it the most decorated and respected paramilitary force in India and earned them the epaullette "The Sentinels of the NorthEast".

A member of the Assam Rifles stands guard in New Delhi, Delhi.

The following picture (left) was removed from this article by a well meaning user who believed that the picture was not the Assam Rifles but the Indian Army Gorkhas. Can this be confirmed? I believe that it may in fact be the Assam Rifles. I believe that they wear hats that are similar (or in fact the same) to the Gurkhas because they have a large number of Gurkha recruits. I believe that this is confirmed by the second picture (right).

They are wearing Gurkha hats, but if you look closely at their eppaulettes, you will see ASSAM shoulder flashes. Also in both pictures the soldiers are wearing the same colour patch on the pagryi of their hats and the same cloth belts (colours) are the same. This leads me to believe that both are in fact of the Assam Rifles and the original image perhaps can stil be used.

Can an expert confirm this please? Cheers.AustralianRupert (talk) 23:30, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

==> It has been suggested to me by another user that both of these photos are actually of a soldier from the Assam Regiment not the Assam Rifles. As such I have removed both. I will keep them here on the talk page though so that others may review or discuss this decision. Of course, there is a lesson in this - when uploading photos to Wiki, label them well! :-) AustralianRupert (talk) 06:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, the photo on the left has been used on two other pages as Assam Rifles Paramilitary and Paramilitary forces of India, however, unless someone can categorically state it is I will defer to the user who originally removed it. AustralianRupert (talk) 06:45, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The image to the right surely is that of soldiers from the Assam rifles.[1][2]. The second image may be of the soldier from the Assam regiment of the Indian Army.[3], but this cannot be confirmed.Chanakyathegreat (talk) 13:24, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Gentlemen I see that changes have been reverted both images are of Assam regiment here is a better view of things

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=147636, just look at those photos. Also technically India gate is a military establishment, so for all ceremonial purpose Indian army's guard will be used. Assam rifles is a paramilitary force. Assam rifles has a different uniform. just pay attention here http://assamrifles.net/site/PhotoGalary.aspx just look at the shirt color lanyard and shoulder tabs. That photo is wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Armybrat (talkcontribs) 16:39, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually both the photos are Assam Regiment. The difference in uniform are as follows 1) Assam Rifles use blue gray trousers & gray shirt with red-black lanyard, Indian army uses olive green half sleeves shirt over the year except in winter when the second khaki-green colour (don't know what it is called)full shirt is used. 2) In Assam Regiment the word ASSAM is writen in silver metal and on left and write shoulder as you can see in both immages, Assam Rifles use a curved ASSAM in yellow over red. 3)The headgear of Assam Regiment is khaki with light khaki band and the insignia is black on the left side. On Assam Rifles the hat is still khaki with light khaki band but has a red border and insignia is on red background and worn on right side. See assamrifles.com it has very good images but I dont know how to embed them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.195.7.50 (talk) 09:27, 29 November 2009 (UTC) I am removing the image from this page as well as Paramilitary page. I have some images of Assam rifles and will soon upload after confirming the copyright issues. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.195.3.150 (talk) 08:50, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

References and other fixes

[edit]

This page needs more references to make it credible. I've added the Parker reference, but it only touches on Gurkha recruitment. I have no other sources. If someone possesses some more specific sources, please feel free to put in the citations and list them in the references and notes sections. Other than that I've had a go at dividing the article into sections and worked on an introduction as per earlier discussion on this page. The infobox probably needs fixing too - I will have a go if no one else does, but I am not an expert on this unit at all so it may be best left up to someone with information and sources and who knows a bit about the Assam Rifles. Cheers. AustralianRupert (talk) 23:38, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pre Independence Decorations

[edit]

Can anyone help with pre Independence decorations for Assam Rifles members? I'm looking at the history page on the Assam Rifles official site and it lists quite a number of British decorations in World War I and World War II. I will try to include these in the text of the history section as I work on it, but I don't think it is a comprehensive list so I haven't as yet included it in the decorations section. Is Assam Rifles a CAPF or a paramilitary force?

[edit]

So, recently there has been edit-war on this page about whether Assam Rifles is a CAPF or a paramilitary force. I've started a discussion on Central Armed Police Forces talk page regarding this. Please contribute over there. Let's build up a consensus, before making any further changes to this article. Link to the discussion: Talk:Central Armed Police Forces#Are Assam Rifles and NSG considered as CAPF?. Thanks. —Sarvatra (talk) 06:27, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sarvatra and Septrillion: I have added my comments on the CPAF page. Adamgerber80 (talk) 14:51, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This appears to be a Huggle mistake. I have no opinion on this. \\\Septrillion:- ~~‭~~10Eleventeen 15:38, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nowhere are any of the controversies (use of human shields, rape under colour of law, allegations of Assam Rifles DG Lieutenant General Rameshwar Roy misusing official funds), despite being covered in international news? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.81.94.68 (talk) 18:24, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of content

[edit]

This is a general overview article about one institution, I rm some content what looked as just a collection of news and Wikipedia is not a newspaper or internet news portal and not every news is content for Wikipedia. No need for local news, individual cases, individual misconduct cases only if some news is big to change the functioning of institution or made a huge impact on it. Editors need to pay attention to WP:NOT policies and maybe to make own blogs or so if interested about did someone brough some gift or individual cases or similar stuff.
