Bully Hayes was not a pirate! He was one of the harder of the so-called "blackbirders". He may have engaged in smuggling, and possibly theft, but he was no pirate. Incidentally, is there any evidence that he was involved in fillibustering (which I definitely wouldn't define as privateering)?JohnC (talk) 06:30, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Intro edit

[edit]

The intro wanders all over the place and is in need of serious rewrite. It starts with an incomplete sentence that lacks terminal punctuation, and then immediately launches into a lengthy discussion of the source of his nickname, without ever explaining who is is or why he's noteworthy. The rest consists largely of trivia about his "job title", again without explaining why he warrants a Wikipedia article. Someone knowledgeable about the topic should step in, delete the existing intro, and craft a new one from sourced facts. 71.200.89.119 (talk) 20:19, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's taken seven years, but it's now trimmed, and much better. Snori (talk) 00:47, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

material removed

[edit]

Some five years ago I included updates on Bully Hayes and a collection of other men associated with the McIvor Escort Robbery in 1853 and the sinking of the ship Madagascar. I include detailed evidence of this on my website thesilentmoon.com. It is extremely disturbing that since then someone has come onto Wikipedia and deleted my references and made declarations that Bully Hayes was not a pirate. We may debate that fact on historical evidence but it is dishonest and disgraceful to alter the historical record for some unknown motive. History under goes many revisions and to delete a part of the story destroys the fabric and importance of history. Whomever is responsible for this editing needs to restore the page to record all the evidence and references that was provided. The person who is trolling wiki to change the historical record for their own motive or arrogance needs to cease. You wrote and published an e-book. It's not a reliable source, and you have a conflict of interest in adding mentions of your book. Meters (talk) 03:54, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Meters but you are wrong it's very appropriate to refer people to the source of information when you add information. the website www.thesilentmoon.com provides extensive primary source material to support all that I claim. This current page is historically incorrect and you wish to defend this misrepresentation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Redbacks Again (talkcontribs) 06:43, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have referred the conversation to the mediation committee for assistance and so await their response. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Redbacks Again (talkcontribs) 04:09, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Redbacks Again: There is no record at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation of your having requested mediation concerning this or any other matter. Before doing so, please review the requirements at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution requests/MedCom carefully. General Ization Talk 04:48, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just to avoid confusion, Redbacks Again referred certain matters to the Mediation Committee via email, but has been informed that the Committee does not accept requests for mediation in that manner. Bully Hayes Alternative History

[edit]

Dear Editors: I've spent 25 years researching this man and events surrounding him. I can provide specific primary source material that discredits much of what is written here. The existing article is based on a book by Basil Lubbock who claimed he served with Bully Hayes and admired him greatly. Much of this primary source material is found at The Silent Moon on the web. In coming months if I can find a away I will re-edit this entry so that it more accurately represents the truth. I'll give you and insight into evidence none other than the founder of Federation Sir Henry Parkes comments in an article to the newspaper about Bully Hayes and pirating and many other horrendous acts.Redbacks Again (talk) 23:32, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, no. As you have already been told several times, you can not use your own research based on primary sources, and you can not use your own web site and self-published book as sources - you would be violating both WP:OR and WP:RS. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 07:03, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
