Political capital?

[edit]

I think we need some information about Colombo's past and present status as the national capital. Reading the articles on Sri Lanka, Colombo, and Kotte, I'm confused about what parts of the government are situated in which cities, and when they moved. Epl 06:46, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Population

[edit]

I reverted the population to the official census count. If someone can find a source for the 1 million+ number that was there as a "2006 estimate", feel free to put it back up. Bodhitha 02:40, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, the last time Colombo city's population was about 350,000 was back in the 1960's. Please don't write down incorrect data unless you can state your source! Sri Lanka Statistics states Colombo with 647,100.

377,396 according to 2001 census: Colombo Population. Bodhitha 13:47, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand those figures. If you add the DS Divisional Sectors up, it comes to about 1,969,522. That's short by 264,767, when looking at the total population for Colombo District. Colombo is split into Colombo North and Colombo South, and the statistics website does not include one of the divisions. So adding 377,396 to 264,767, it comes to 642,163 for the Colombo Municipal area (Zones 1-15), which is the more accepted figure.

Can people please STOP changing the population of Colombo down to 377,000!!! The census quotes 642,020!!! I have provided sources, and I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. STOP it whoever it is from changing to a lower figure. If you can't understand, I've given my reasons above, and here they are: COLOMBO MUNICIPAL COUNCIL includes THIMBIRIGASYAYA AND COLOMBO Divisional Secretariats!!!!!!!

New Upto-date Colombo Article

[edit]

I have just changed the Colombo article and the look and feel of it, the article really needed some attention, it was in pathetic condition. My aim is to make it to the featured article list, so have carefully followed the guidelines of wikipedia and inculded only the required sections and there are some sections of the article that I am still working on. If you need to add anything please add it on the article or at My Scratchpad (I have included some more nice images from Colombo here!!!). It would be helpful if you discuss the changes to be made on the article talk page or in my personal talk page.  «Mÿšíc»  (T) 06:03, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Buildings from all three regimes stand in their glory as reminders. The city and its people show an interesting mix of European clothing and lifestyles together with local customs. The city is by far more modern than most others in neighbouring countries and continues to be a blossoming metropolis of the East." Is this a travel ad for Colombo?

How we may change the sentence? If doesn't sound good.  «Mÿšíc»  (T) 11:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Climate

[edit]

Quote from article, "Colombo’s climate is fairly temperate all throughout the year. During the month of April the temperature averages around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). The only major change in the Colombo weather occurs during the monsoons from May to August and October to January, this is the time of year where heavy rains can be expected. Even though during the day time no severe drop in temperature takes place the nights could be very chilly closer to the coast."

Is this correct? The 35C (95F) temperature given for April seems too high. Also, the periods for the monsoons seems to be a bit off.4.235.81.137 05:59, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Tim G[reply]

WikiProject Cities Rating

  • Rated Start Fails to meet B quality for the following reasons:
    1. The nine section article contains only 12 sources. Data in Infobox City does not reference a source.
    2. Infobox City lacks a skyline picture.
    3. Red links to Wiki articles that do not exist.
    4. Lead section does not meet WP:LEAD
    5. Brief subsections should be written as paragraphs under one larger section. (Shorter TOC)
    6. Copyright questions regarding image:CMCLogo.jpg. Please find a free license image, pref png.

City population

[edit]

There seems to be a disagreement regarding the Department of Census statistics as to whether the population of the city is 377,000 or 640,000. Two different places of the DoS website give two different numbers. As explained by an anon user above, the Colombo Municipal Council area covers the Colombo DS (Population 377,000) and the Thibirigasyaya DS (Population 264,000) giving a total of around 640,000, which explains the conflicting figures.

As to which figure is considered the official "population of Colombo", it is the second one, per the CMC website which states the "city" has a population of 640,000[2], so I am changing the figure to that throughout the article. --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 02:03, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Light Rail

[edit]

Odd syntax makes it difficult to understand the contributor’s intent with the piece on light rail transport, however by following the link provided it is clear that Colombo does not yet have the light rail system. The link states that the Sri Lankan government has given a private consortium of Indian and Singaporean firms the authorization to develop a proposal and financing plan. If it doesn’t exist yet, then how has it “begun to control the excessive traffic in the city?”

I suggest rewording to something a little more plausible, such as:

A proposed light rail system, the Colombo Metro Rail, is under study by NEB Rapid an Indian and Singaporean collaboration.[30] [31] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.79.62.19 (talk) 06:58, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted that section, under the Crystal ball clause, this issue was raised in 2007, theirs still no light rail system in 2017. --Eng. M.Bandara-Talk 19:02, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tourism

[edit]

Along, with the city's ample sources of fashion, Colombo has a number of tourist sights and other places of interest, which span quite a few centuries and three sets of foreign rulers- the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. Some of these, like the Fort area are not really monuments.

Others are the monuments, buildings and gardens – sights that are a part of the city. These include:

  • Wolvendaal Church, Colombo’s oldest Dutch church, still in use. Its floor tiles are made from tombstones from the Dutch church in the Fort, and were brought here in 1813.
  • The Sapumal Foundation, with a permanent exhibition of Sri Lankan art over the past 8 decades.
  • The Dutch Period Museum (formerly a town hall, a hospital, an orphanage, a police station, a post office, and a residence, but now an interesting reminder of colonial times).
  • The National Museum has an interesting and large collection of antique porcelain, manuscripts, royal regalia, antique furniture, masks and other pieces.
  • The Viharamahadevi Park (which is next to the National Museum, the National Art Gallery and the Natural History Museum), Colombo’s largest park. Well known for its flowering trees, water channels and fountains, the park is overlooked at one end by the pristine white-domed Town Hall.
  • Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, an important Buddhist temple. This temple is believed to be at the spot where the Buddha preached 2000 years ago. It has an excellent carving of a reclining Buddha, and is the site for an annual perahera (religious procession) in January.
  • Dehiwala Zoo, which has a good collection of animals and is at a distance of 10 km from Fort. It has an impressive aquarium and aviary, and is invariably a hit with younger members of families.
  • Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque at Second Cross Street, in the Pettah Bazaar area, is one of the most striking buildings in Colombo. Completed in 1909, the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque is striped red and white like a layer cake and is popular among tourist destinations in Colombo.

Royal College image

[edit]

The Royal College image is added,removed,re-added over & over, this is really childish. The image does not add any value to the content in the article and does not improve the readers knowledge. The article already has so many images most of them are of important landmarks of Colombo which are generally popular even amongst tourists to the city. Including pictures of Oldest School, oldest hotel, oldest park etc..in the article is very amateurish. Please build proper consensus before you do so again. NëŧΜǒńğerPeace Talks 10:43, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it is childish, coz I have added it and you have been deleting it saying that it is irrelevant, without any proper reasons. But I don't agree. I think it is quit relevant for this article, reasons;
  1. The picture is used in the subsection Education to depict an educational institution. Its one of the famous schools in Colombo and the oldest public school. There for it is relevant pic to the section.
  2. It is a copyright free image.
  3. It is one of the few building of Victorian architecture in the city. No other building of this type has a photo there (the old parliament is Greek Revival style)
  4. Its presence in this article has not violate any wiki guidelines.
This article is not a travel website, but an encyclopedic article on all aspects of the city. Therefor photos of buildings of historic value may be added, even though they are not tourist attractions. Please check out Colombo's sister city Saint Petersburg and see the section on Crime, they even put a picture of one of their prisons, as it is relevant to that section. Check out these other cities that have added photos of notable buildings of educational institutions of historic value to their education sections;
  1. Washington D.C.
  2. Kuala_Lumpur
  3. London
  4. Paris
  5. Madrid
  6. Berlin
  7. Buenos_Aires
  8. Cape_Town
  9. Taipei
Since you (Netmonger) have not provided any solid reason for removing this image, having so many images is not a justifiable reason. Therefor if no non-childish reason is given within 24 hrs to prove that this image violates any wiki guidelines, by begin in this page, I will add it back again.Thankyou Nitraven (talk) 15:19, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My reasons are very clear,'famous' is not a reason to include an image in the article.

  1. The criteria for inclusion of anything in wikipedia is verifiability, how do we quantify 'famous'? And where is the reference to say it is the oldest public school? This is disputable.
  2. Yes only copyright free images can be included in wikipedia.
  3. It is not one of the few buildings with Victorian architecture, I disagree with you on this. The most prominent and recognized building would be the Victoria Memorial Building I have a beautiful image of this, but I do not have reference to include this in the article. As I said my claims should be verifiable to include in the article.
  4. I agree this is not a travel website, as the anonymous user said this article is full of childish adjectives like "most","Uniquest","Oldest" we should avoid this, if you have the time please look at some of the featured articles of cities, I didn't go through your entire list of cities, but the ones I went through were not featured articles. And all of the featured articles include images of universities which are of international importance. I just randomly selected the below ones.
For example,
  1. Ahmedabad
  2. Belgrade
  3. Dundee
On consensus building see Wikipedia:Consensus NëŧΜǒńğerPeace Talks 05:46, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect for the editor I am afraid your reasons are far from clear. If you were to inclined to read the article on the school then you could understand that it is 'famous'. "how do we quantify 'famous'" what childish nonsenses is this. If you have a Victoria Memorial Building (are you referring to the Victoria Memorial Eye Hospital Building) by all means add it not just delete pictures you don't like. In the respect of featured articles are we to stop adding any picture of Universities coz there are NO "universities which are of international importance" in Colombo ? The adding of the Image in question doesn't violate any wiki guild lines and in your explanations have not proven any to this date. Your removal of the image has be arbitrary and based on your personal opinion. I gave you a chance to prove any violations of addition of the image to the article. Since I thought that I may have violated wikiguide lines by adding it, therefore gave you the opportunity show me the violation I have made, You have not done so. Hence I am re-adding the image to the article. This time please before removing build a "proper consensus". Nitraven (talk) 11:34, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

A Royal Charter is granted by the Queen/King on advice of the privy council, it is not granted by the queens council, this is in regard to your editing in article Royal College.Nitraven (talk) 11:34, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry the image has to go, I regret your inability to understand my point clearly. And your claim it is the oldest public school is an original research, to call some school to be famous is also an Original research (does it mean other schools are infamous?). Kindly refer the wikipedia policy guidelines on original research before you add the image on this basis again. This is the wiki guideline you are violating, you might want to specifically look at the sections Synthesis of published material which advances a position and Citing oneself. For that matter most part of the article sounds like original research. NëŧΜǒńğerPeace Talks 11:02, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here you are at it again claiming that its childish to remove and re-add the same pic, yet now undoing my edits with refs and claiming that its OR. The editing made by me had refs added. If the refs are questionable you where to bring that to notice in the talk page and prove it as non-reliable ref. However you did not do that, again you arbitrary removed it. Also your reason for the removal of the image is its OR, how ever the OR you state is in the wording of the image description and not regrading the image in this article it self. Therefor you have just removed a image that is not violating any wiki-guidelines by being here. Hence your removing this image can be considered vandalism and will be reported if you were to remove it again.
Just because one school is famous than the others it does not make the rest or any for that matter infamous. I see that your incapable of understanding that fact, but I'm sure every one else can. If the ref given, which is the school web site (the school it self a government institution, coming under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education Sri Lanka) can be considered accurate if you could prove otherwise. Furthermore I'm adding two refs here as to two points discussed here;
  1. Only public (government) school in colombo in the 1800's, hence the oldest public school in the city:- [3] by the Dailynews one of the counties main english dailies.
  2. One (modestly) of the most prominent schools in the country:- [4] Sundaytimes another of the counties main english dailies.

Therefor I am re-adding it since no one else other than Netmonger seems to have a problem with it. All constructive comments welcomed.Nitraven (talk) 13:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Netmonger, again in regard to the your editing in the article Royal College, it states that "A Royal College in some Commonwealth countries is technically a college which has received permission to use the prefix Royal. Permission is usually granted through a Royal Charter. " all Royal College's don't need or have a Royal Charter, however they do need royal permission to use the prefix.Nitraven (talk) 13:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reliability of your sources

The sundaytimes article claims that Royal College was founded in 1855 whereas it was actually founded in 1835, this proves how reliable your source is, the guy who wrote the article simply couldn't get the year the college was founded let alone decide whether it is the best school in the country. The college website is a primary source so not a valid reliable source as per wikipedia guidelines, I may say (I may) in my opinion Trinity College is the best school in the country (which may not be), with most desiciplined students (which may not be), I can come up with equal number of articles from the same newspapers you provided as references but wikipedia is not the place to do such a stupid thing. Because these cheap government controlled news papers are not reliable, as for the Sunday Times the chief editor is a old boy of Royal college. I am qouting what Jimbo said here,

"If your viewpoint is held by an extremely small minority, then — whether it's true or not, whether you can prove it or not — it doesn't belong in Wikipedia, except perhaps in some ancillary article. Wikipedia is not the place for original research." See WP:OR

If you read the wikipedia guidelines you would've already come across the above qoute. you said

"If the refs are questionable you where to bring that to notice in the talk page and prove it as non-reliable ref"

please read WP:PROVEIT the burden of proving your source is reliable lies with you and not me. Before including the image once more please consider reading the above policy guidelines. NëŧΜǒńğerPeace Talks 19:55, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Still this is beating around the bush. It only effects the wording. Please cite wiki rule stating why this image cannot be in this page and this sections, beside the wording.Nitraven (talk) 20:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since Netmonger is adamant in keeping this image out of the education section, I will be adding it under the architecture of the city once I finish writing that section. In the mean time I would kindly request Netmonger to be more concern about what is written in the article than the images in it coz I just removed several false information. Also please remember Netmonger the lack of refs in this article is more concerning than that of a single school.Nitraven (talk) 06:09, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the way what do you make of this [5]Nitraven (talk) 09:13, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

University of Colombo

[edit]

Nitraven, I think this is a good article on the history of University of Colombo, We should extract some info from this and include it in the article. Do you have any images of University of Colombo? I think it deserves an image in the education section, as it is one of the most important educational institutions for all Sri Lankans than Royal College :-) do you agree?. NëŧΜǒńğerPeace Talks 06:03, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now please don't start comparing educational institutions! but I do agree that a pic should be added. There is a one but not sure if its a good one. Also I am undoing your resent edit in good faith, since it is only fair to list the major schools of each faith, and if any one wants more details on the school they can always go to the individual article. Nitraven (talk) 06:51, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That is exactly my point, we dont have to put within brackets which faith each school belongs to this only shows how divisive the stupid Sri Lankans we are, and as you say the reader can always go to through the schools articles to find out more about it. NëŧΜǒńğerPeace Talks 07:26, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, however in the same respect examples are not explain every thing since there is an article on Sri lanksn education. I am also readding the part on the unis since you gave no reason for removing it. Nitraven (talk) 12:17, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Population

[edit]

A highly dubious population figure of 4,575,000 has been given but when I tried to remove I was reverted by another user who believes that the given source is correct. I have seen this behaviour before where editors with no local knowledge use a single source to back up dubious facts.

According to the official 2011 census the population of the entire Colombo District was 2,309,809 in 2012. Gampaha District's population was 2,294,641. So the combined Colombo-Gampaha districts had a population of 4,604,550. If the assertion that the Colombo metropolitan area population of 4,575,000 is correct this would mean that only 29,450 people in the Colombo-Gampaha district area didn't live in the Colombo metropolitan area. This would mean towns such as Gampaha, Negombo, Mirigama and Ja-Ela would all have to be a part of Colombo. Anyone with local knowledge would know that this isn't the case.--obi2canibetalk contr 19:33, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of A metropolitan area, sometimes referred to as a metro area or metro, is a region consisting of a densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure, and housing. A metropolitan area usually comprises multiple jurisdictions, municipalities: neighborhoods, townships, cities, exurbs, counties, districts, and even states. As social, economic and political institutions have changed, metropolitan areas have become key economic and political regions. Metropolitan areas include one or more urban areas, as well as satellite cities, towns and intervening rural areas that are socio-economically tied to the urban core, typically measured by commuting patterns. A another definition of a metropolitan area is a major city together with its suburbs and nearby cities, towns, and environs over which the major city exercises a commanding economic and social influence. Literally construed, metropolis from the Greek means "mother city," and by implication there are progeny or dependents scattered about the core area. Sometimes there may be two or more major cities. This definition from Princeton University: "A metropolitan area is a region consisting of a populous urban core with a high density of employment plus surrounding territory that is socio-economically linked to the urban core by commuting. A metropolitan area is also sometimes known as a commuter belt or a labor market area". Another General definition "A metropolitan area usually combines an agglomeration (the contiguous built-up area) with peripheral zones not themselves necessarily urban in character, but closely bound to the center by employment or commerce. These zones are also sometimes known as a commuter belt, and may extend well beyond the urban periphery depending on the definition used". I would say that, the inter-connectivity and socioeconomic reliance of all major towns and cities in these heavily built up districts, also not forgetting the Northern part of Kalutra district including Panadura all in very close proximity to Colombo fit the above criterion's--Navops47 (talk) 05:04, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By that definition we can include the entire population of Sri Lanka within Metropolitan Colombo. And the entire Home counties region can become Greater London.--obi2canibetalk contr 14:11, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

==WikiProject Cities Rating==
    7. Section headings are not in proper alpha case.
    8. Article needs to be expanded to touch on a wider range of information. See Athens.

Pronunciation correct?

[edit]

There's something with given phonetic pronunciation. I am not the phonetic expert myself but I copy-pasted the given pronunciation in a phonetic synthesizer and that was definitely out. I think someone should correct this! — Preceding unsigned comment added by INKA000 (talkcontribs) 20:13, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

is it okay to call Colombo "Capital"? (not district capital / commercial capital, but just capital)

[edit]

There are many (almost a 100) result for the search: "the capital colombo". Is it legitimate to call Colombo the capital despite it not officially being the capital? Will it not mislead the reader?

If it is, then I think we should delete the "the capital" from all these results. Orielno (talk) 11:02, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Colombo is the de-facto capital. President's office, PM's office, government ministries, supreme court and foreign embassies are in Colombo. Only Parliament is in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.--Obi2canibe (talk) 21:28, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Updated infobox image

[edit]

@Dan arndt: @Milindapck: @Blackknight12: @Obi2canibe: @Cossde: @Randeepa: @AntanO: @L Manju: @Rehman:

Hey folks. I'm not at all a pro at this kind of thing, but I made what I thought would be a good replacement for the current infobox image. Please do have a look see and let me know if you think any changes need to be made, and what you think about this replacing the one we have on right now. - ක - (talk) 18:00, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The new pic is nice. The tried it on the infobox but observed little blurred/cloudy appearance than the current picture. I think that can be corrected. Also the details of the left side of the last picture (beneath one) have been slightly disturbed by the sunlight. --L Manju (talk) 19:40, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply! Yes, the blurriness issue seems to come from a size/resolution issue when resizing to fit the infobox. Will look into it. I also just noticed the Cargills building is a bit too dark and the Gangaramaya picture is too dull. The sunlight is a good point too. - ක - (talk) 04:42, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Think that the proposed replacement provides a more up-to-date series of images. Noting Jesuschristonacamel's points about the clarity of the images, if they can be adjusted then I have no objection to the current image being replaced. Dan arndt (talk) 05:09, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Made some tweaks on the brightness/contrast issues, but the clarity problem seems to be something on Wikipedia's end. I've tried reducing the glare of the sunlight on the panorama, but nothing I did makes it look natural after reducing brightness in that corner :( - ක - (talk) 15:48, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Using zh instead of ḻ to represent Tamil letter ழ in the name கொழும்பு.

[edit]

ḻ is very misleading and leads to incorrect pronunciation of the letter ழ. The name should be pronounced "Kozhumpu" and not "Kolumpu" in Tamil. 182.79.4.250 (talk) 11:37, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Slave Island official name change to Company Roads

[edit]

This page is in the process of being renamed to Company Roads, the new official name of the suburb in English, officially renamed by the Sri Lankan government in 2023. Draft proposal approved.

The page for the new name Company Roads has been approved. Due to common name policy in Wikipedia, this page will remain under a compromise and transition phase for now. Despite it being under the wishes of the government, the community itself and local diplomatic missions to overcome painful colonial historic legacy and stigma. It is also for social justice and reconciliation. It relates to post-colonial identity. It also implies a shift in urban transformation and modernisation. Further sources and data will be awaited.
