Oomycetes

[edit]

Is it true that all gametangium are haploid or is this a mistake in the introduction? If oogonia are gametangia and oogonia of oomycotes are diploid, then it seems that this statement is false. --Tomatokate (talk) 16:04, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell, the oogonium of oomycetes consists of a wall only, and is not a composed of multiple cells. It is therefore neither diploid nor comparable to the multicellular structure of a gametangium as usually meant. Yes, diploid zygotes may be housed within the oogonium wall, but a diploid zygote also develops inside an archegonium. --EncycloPetey (talk) 06:02, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
