Unsourced Edits Copied From Draft Shaheen Website

A number of unsourced edits were made to this wiki that were copied from a website called DraftShaheen.com (said Wikipedia account "Granitestater".

Neither campaign literature nor hatchet jobs belong in Wikipedia

I'm going to revert or otherwise remove some of the recent and very POV additions to this article.

Statements from right-wing think tanks or right-wing newspaper editorials denouncing Shaheen are not appropriate news sources. If they are introduced as examples of opinion or controversy, the opposing POV must get equal exposure.

Campaign puffery is of course also inappropriate.betsythedevine 11:13, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Free image

We can't lift a picture of a candidate for US Senate from her campaign website? I highly doubt they will mind the exposure.69.64.219.3 (talk) 14:37, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Agreed, a little late albeit.--Duffy2032 (talk) 05:46, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

NPOV dispute regarding tax proposal

I'm not disputing the facts regarding Shaheen's tax proposal in 2000, but I do think the placement, especially in isolation (both in terms of placement in the article and specificity in comparison to other gubernatorial actions) seems to have a strong bias in favor of her political opponents. It should be explained in context--was there a budget shortfall, etc? and given that the "Pledge" is the creation of the openly right wing Union Leader newspaper--or it should be truncated and moved to a different section of the article, or removed altogether. —Preceding unsigned comment added by FrankLloydMike (talkcontribs) 14:48, 7 April 2008 (UTC) calling union leader "right wing", as if new york times, boston globe, nbc, etc, are not consequently "left wing", divulges this poster's political inclination. the union leader is the largest distribution newspaper in new hampshire, 140,000 daily readers and 180,000 sunday readers of print version, and they also run newhampshire.com. if you don't recognize the main media outlets in new hampshire, then YOU are identifying yourself as an extremist who has no business making objective edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.98.192.170 (talk) 19:56, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

The part about two arab-American families in the same Senate race

It's obscure at best, and even trivial. It certainly doesn't make sense to have it in the top paragraph of Senator Shaheen's biographical article; perhaps in the one about the race she won to get elected. Can anyone think of the first Senate race involving two Jewish families, two black families, two latino families, etc.? And if you could, would the fact that it was the first such race be important enough to be above the fold on the winner's bio? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.147.171.226 (talk) 18:14, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Gordon Humphrey

I've excised the following one-sentence paragraph:

"Shaheen's 2000 opponent, former U.S. Sen. Gordon Humphrey, also criticized Shaheen's record of support for abortion and civil rights for gay people."[1]

The link is broken, which I think makes this problematic by BLP standards (the LP, in this case, being Humphrey). Moreover, the phrasing seems POV to me: a more neutral description than "civil rights for gay people" is indicated.

"Deciding vote"

The claim that Shaheen "cast the deciding vote" is simply false, as explained here.

In the case of the health care law, there’s a sliver of truth. All of the Democratic senators were needed to pass the bill. One of the key votes happened on Dec. 24, 2009, when 58 Democrats and two independents voted together in favor of the bill. (Sixty votes were needed for a preliminary cloture vote to prevent filibusters; otherwise the final vote couldn’t happen and the bill would have been blocked.)

"Any one of those 60 Democrats who voted for it in the U.S. Senate, had they voted no, it would not have passed," Rubens said in an interview. "So any one of those 60 would have been the deciding vote."

However, PolitiFact has been unsympathetic to that argument in the past, since calling someone "the deciding vote" implies he or she played a pivotal role, such as withholding support until the last moment.

When it comes to the health care law, Shaheen wasn’t a holdout. If any Democratic senator deserves the distinction of clearing the way for the health reform law, it was then-Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska. As was widely reported at the time, Nelson delivered the 60th vote needed to send the bill to the floor of the Senate for a vote.

Therefore, I have removed the claim and its citation, which is to a right-wing opinion columnist with a very well-noted reputation for playing fast and loose with the facts. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 09:58, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Following suit with Dick Durbin and Bernie Sanders, these outdated official portraits from a decade ago should be replaced with recent images. Here's some potential replacements and let's vote as to whether we should change the image. I personally prefer D. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 02:02, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
