Importance

[edit]

Would you say this article is Middle or High on the Importance scale? Kd lvr 23:42, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ive added your re-assesment request to the WikiProject Pittsburgh assesment page. THEY will decide if it is high or mid. Its their project, they decide how they want it rated.--TREYWiki 18:06, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Layout

[edit]

It is advised to follow the page layout as determined by the WikiProject Television Stations. Please see that page for information.--Write On 1983 01:27, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ratings

[edit]

Ratings are more important than trivia and should be relocated to its own section. Ratings are a constantly changing piece of information. --Write On 1983 22:09, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HD Signal Usage by KDKA

[edit]

I don't want to mess with the format for a station since that's not my expertise, but IMO we should have info on the HDTV signals broadcast by these stations. KDKA currently only uses its 2.1 and not 2.2 or 2.3, if you will.--VigilantInvestor 19:37, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Former personalities

[edit]

Sheila Hyland and Kym Gable both worked at KDKA-TV in 2006 and therefore should be considered as former personalities. So I'd recommend that the information remain on the page. --Write On 1983 16:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eyewitness News

[edit]
  • Please prove KDKA-TV's "Eyewitness News" branding was inspired by KYW. Removed this unsourced speculation. kd_lvr 07:56, 5 February 2006

Other

[edit]
  • The only member of the KDKA-TV weather staff who holds a seal from the American Meteorological Society is Dennis Bowman. Please refrain from adding the AMS prefix to those who are not members. Burghboy80 15:08, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Salary information for a private employer is immaterial to Wikipedia and will be removed. Ratings information could be included if the author chooses to present such data in a coherent manner. Also, once again, Sheila Hyland is a former KD talent and will be listed as such. As for theme music, the information presented was full of inaccuracies and broken links and was removed. Burghboy80 11:28, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Jon Burnett hosts Pittsburgh Today Live two to three times a week. Therefore, he is a host of the show and will be listed accordingly. Burghboy80 13:15, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • kd lvr, you have edited this page like a pro! Your use of slogans and addition of theme song information is totally informative. Why these sectsons haven't been previously added, I don't know! Please continue to contribute to this page. (UTC)
  • Removed CBS2 section as unsourced speculation.--Isotope23 16:45, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well the user that wrote the section, CoolKatt number 9999 (talkcontribs) the user has a histiry of incerting speculation, POV, and unvervied infomation into TV station articles as well as not responding to messages or talk page dicussions, re-incerted the section, once agin with no sources. While i didnt remove it, i did do some heavy editing to it, and changed the tag from {{not verified}} to {{OriginalResearch}} as it seemed more fitting. In the frirst paragraphi i removed the blatent POV, and marked two sectiond with {{fact}} as they are seriously in need of it. The second paragraph i removed totaly, first off it was hardley related to the suject of the art aeticle and was nothing less then a POV on the so called CBS mandate. More then likely the user will reincert this once again, if the section is removed even in its current state, i will not object. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:09, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ad84: You sure know your stuff about Pittsburgh TV! Keep it going! (UTC)

I chopped it down considerably. The controversy about the calls/logo is worth a mention, but there was three paragraphs of info about other stations that weren't KDKA and didn't pertain, AT ALL, to this article. NickBurns 00:14, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Station Images

[edit]

Someone please clean up the "Station Images" gallery. This does not qualify as fair use. ~MDD4696 19:59, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The use of logos does qualify as fair use under copyright law--see Template:Tv-logo and Template:Tv-screenshot. Blueboy96 06:06, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the logos are the problem... its most of the other images (like the anchor images). I think those are the ones that should go. --WCQuidditch 22:19, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Much Needed Re-Formatting

[edit]

Hey All, I completely looked over the page with a fresh set of eyes. Here are my changes....

  • removed all the redlinks
  • re-formatted a couple sections
  • removed informatiom that wasn't true or was causing some "fact" tags to be put up
  • bolded the names of the reporters so it would make the info beside it easier to read (ala [[1]])
  • added a "where are they now?" line beside their name (also ala [[2]])

I am going to see if any other sections need updating and give the infobox a once over as well. Take Care and Rock on....SVRTVDude (VT) 23:26, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like the bolded names!! Looks so much better!! --Write_On_1983 talk | contribs 01:38, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I wasn't sure how to list Dennis Bowman, so I went with Weekend/Fill-In (since he had some weekdays on his schedule), but freelance works just the same:) I am glad you like the changes. - SVRTVDude (VT) 02:09, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I guess he considers his title a "freelance" thing. It's weird -- he can work for several days straight and then not work again for like a month. Must be cheaper than actually hiring him full-time I guess. --Write_On_1983 talk | contribs 02:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bill and Patti Burns

[edit]

So, I think that if anyone from KDKA deserves their own pages, Bill and Patti Burns need them! They are by far Pittsburgh icons -- more so than any of the newer people at KDKA. Just a thought. I'm too young to really remember the "Patti and Daddy news" but I do recall both on air, more Patti than her dad. This would be a good idea for Kd and anyone from Pgh who has info on these two and KDKA. I'd support pages for them because they are icons -- I don't think Ken Rice and Kristine Sorensen are worthy of pages simply because they haven't done anything spectacular. --Write_On_1983 talk | contribs 01:37, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Write On, I created pages for Patti and Bill Burns back in March. NickBurns 15:45, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They were never linked on the KDKA page. I enjoy them. --Write On 1983 16:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You enjoy what - links? Bill and Patti? I used to enjoy Bill and Patti. They're dead now, though. NickBurns 01:37, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CBS 2

[edit]

I tagged the CBS 2 section as unreferenced because it is still speculation, especially since no proof is given that KDKA was ever considering it. Any disagreements? --Write_On_1983 talk | contribs 01:40, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I probably took that down when I was going through. I took out pieces that didn't fit or I couldn't confirm and pieces that I thought you put the tag up for. If there is other pieces that need references, please let me know and I will get on those as well. - SVRTVDude (VT) 02:11, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing is the speculation that KDKA may change to CBS 2. It's never really been discussed -- at least publicly -- that they would change. Based on the CBS Mandate, one could assume that CBS may want to see that change, but the call letters of KDKA are too strong and too attached to Pittsburgh to re-brand it a generic "CBS 2." I figure that since it's never really been discussed in any newspaper or anything published, it's best to tag it as unreferenced. --Write_On_1983 talk | contribs 02:15, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good point...same thing with WJZ too. They have the CBS 13 logo, but still say "WJZ Eyewitness News" (used to be "Channel 13 Eyewitness News") but there is always that speculation. But you bring up a good point. My fault on that one for taking it down. Sorry. Take care...SVRTVDude (VT) 02:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's a tricky thing w/ these CBS O&O channels. I'd hate to see KDKA turn to "CBS 2" -- just the thought makes me cringe! --Write_On_1983 talk | contribs 20:36, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Newscasts

[edit]

I know it has been stated in the past that the KDKA on the CW newscasts belong on the WPCW page, but the are KDKA-TV newscasts; therefore, wouldn't the newscasts be on both the KDKA-TV and the WPCW pages. I am me73 20:08, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was stated that even though the WPCW newscast are produced by KDKA, they are aired on WPCW so they should be there. You wouldn't want the KDKA newscasts on the WPCW page, that would just be backwards of what is being done on the KDKA page.
I think we should have the KDKA newscasts on the KDKA page and one line stating that they produce newscasts on WPCW (with a link to the "Newscasts" section on the WPCW page) and a one line mention on the WPCW page that the newscasts are produced by KDKA to tie them together. - NeutralHomer T:C 03:43, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the above. Kd lvr 20:15, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

End Times

[edit]

There's been a bit of controversy over the proper way to list the end times of a newscast. While nearly every TV station page on Wiki lists, say, a 5pm newscast starting at 5 and ending at 6, some feel the need to list 5:59 as the proper end time. This is not correct. Every station varies in terms of when they start and end their newscasts. Some have a seamless transition between shows, others go to commercial breaks. Bottom line is, it tends to be fluid on a daily basis. In fact, I glanced at the time KDKA started its 5pm newscast yesterday -- 4:58pm. Let's keep it generic. Nitpicking over a :59 end time is disingenuous. Burghboy80 03:49, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But remember, this is an encyclopedia. Exact times are encyclopedic.--TREYWiki 03:52, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind going with the 4 to 5 or 5 to 6, I just was being as encyclopedic as possible when I wrote that. Hence my 4 to 4:59. I personally don't mind it being the generic 4 to 5. Each works just as good:) - NeutralHomer T:C 04:13, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

News Music

[edit]

Why is news theme information not allowed on the page? It's factual information that is rather important to a station's history. Kd lvr 21:06, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It actually isn't allowed on any TV station page. It was discussed on WP:TVS and they agreed that it shouldn't be on there. Why? I am not sure. My opinion, it should. But, for some reason they decided it shouldn't. I don't know if it is because it can be found elsewhere, or if it was some outside urging or what, but it isn't allowed. I will try and found out the full reason and let ya know. Take Care...NeutralHomer T:C 02:30, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

KDKA-TV News HD

[edit]

There is a speculation that KDKA may become the first Pittsburgh Station to broadcast news in HD. 70.20.97.143 23:25, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please cite the speculation. As far as I know, this is not true. I have been told there is NO infrastructure in place to accommodate this.Burghboy80 02:27, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about KDKA's plans, but WPXI Channel 11 News beat them to the punch by going HDTV at their new studio in Mid October 2007.--VigilantInvestor 19:34, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Weather

[edit]

Jon Burnett is NOT the morning weathercaster. I contacted the station, and was told he and Dennis Bowman will be sharing morning and weekend duties. Please cite your source if you insist he is the morning weathercaster. Burghboy80 02:27, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Former Personalities

[edit]

Sheila Hyland was a freelance morning anchor. She was not a permanent fixture for the morning news. She was a freelancer, and she will be listed as such. Source Kd lvr 02:23, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But since she was not freelancing anywhere else, she was just a temporary fill-in and the freelance title was a tad much. I switched it to read "fill-in morning anchor (April/May of 2006)". - NeutralHomer T:C 02:50, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On KDKA's analog sign-off montage broadcast on June 12, 2009, there were a few short clips of Vic Miles, one interviewing somebody and another of him anchoring a circa 1965-66 KDKA-TV newscast. How long was he with the station before embarking on a long run with WCBS-TV in New York? –Wbwn (talk) 16:03, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Local Programming

[edit]

The WikiProject Television Stations states the following:
"A television station article should include:
what kind of programming the station airs
are there any original shows that the station shows?"
This means that the programming is appropriate content for this article and that it will remain on the page. Kd lvr 18:31, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

KD, give it up, it ain't worth the fight. No one at WP:TVS is interested in stopping this, some are actually helping. No matter what the rules say, it's going to happen. Don't fight it, you will just get threatened and laughed at no matter what you do. Just gotta let this one go, even if it is wrong. - NeutralHomer T:C 19:38, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where does it say that newscasts are no longer allowed? Kd lvr 19:55, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
According to what User:JzG and User:AMIB, it is in the WP:NOT#DIR rules. Which is total BS. I proposed a change in the rule, I was threatened with a ban and laughed at. I tried to talk to WP:TVS members only to have User:JzG revert my messages and threaten me with a harrassment block. I even tried to get comments from other admins, only to have my past behaviour become the topic of discussion instead. No one at WP:TVS is willing to stop them and this is just something that will happen, sadly. - NeutralHomer T:C 20:21, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We should just leave the page as is. This crap is obviously not widespread. It's just a few people screwing around with us,the frequentditors of KDKA-TV. If it was an actual rule, we wouldn't have nearly every TV station's article in the country "breaking the (made up) rules." Kd lvr 23:26, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Neutral Homer and really anybody who disagrees with you. Wikipedia is not a place to list your programming schedule. You need to stop being disruptive and edit warring over this. Do some research, find something historical and add it to the article. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 03:15, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Campaign

[edit]

You'll need to cite the image campaign details. Also, please refrain from changing the station's slogan because "Your Home" is shown prominently in the aforementioned ads. Burghboy80 02:14, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Traffic

[edit]

Ok, who keeps putting traffic in its own category?? Come on, there's one person who does traffic there in the morning and when he's not doing that, he serves as a reporter. It just so happens that his "beat" is transportation stories. Don't give it a different section as he's a reporter like the rest of them. Geez. --Write On 1983 02:08, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anchors

[edit]

The list needs to be weeded to those who are notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. External links do are not to be linked into prose. I'm gonna take a hatchet this thing in a day or two. §hep¡Talk to me! 18:09, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personalities

[edit]

I have changed the heading "Personalities" to "On-air staff". "Personalities" is industry jargon. It does not describe the position or the work. It is meaningless to readers unfamiliar with American broadcast industry jargon, and is not appropriate for an encyclopedia. "Staff" indicates that these people are being listed because they work for the station. Also, "Former personalities" sounds like people who have been lobotimized. Ick. Surely there is a better way of describing people who've left or lst their jobs. "Former on-air staff" is clearer, I think. Ground Zero | t 11:29, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

what happened to on-air and former staff?

[edit]

Why the major deletion? If you are going to do this to one of the first news stations in the country, then please make it consistent with all news articles on wikipedia. If not, then please restore the "on-air" and "former" staff members and relevant information. JJGeneral1 (talk) 13:39, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have readded the sections. That should not have been deleted. The deletion was against consensus. - NeutralhomerTalk20:12, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
