Water temperatures

[edit]

Where can I find something about the water temperatures of Lake Ontario in spring/summer/autumn ? Is ist comfortable swimming in Lake Ontario in summer or is it cold an one can only stay several minutes in the water ?92.230.62.247 (talk) 21:47, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Simply google "lake ontario water temperature". Over 20 °C (68 °F) in summer seems all right with me, but I must admit I haven't tried it myself. Bring a wetsuit in spring and fall and go somewhere else in the winter. ;) Jaho (talk) 14:59, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lake Ontario Lake Monsters

[edit]

Articles previously found online regarding lake monsters in Lake Ontario have stated that it is questioned as to whether any possible lake monster found in Lake Ontario might be "Bessie," the purported lake monster of Lake Erie.

This web page offers objective descriptive reports of sightings of a possible lake monster in the Canadian province of Ontario, including Lake Ontario. Described are Lake Ontario sightings going back at least 200 years. Most recent sightings have been in 1968 and twice in the 1970's.

For some reason, Lake Ontario's alleged lake monster has not been given a name in online literature.

Weasel Words/Slant in Section Regarding Pollution

[edit]

The phrase "the lake was dying" is not of encyclopedic standard. Realistically speaking, a lake cannot "die". I have removed the sentence and replaced it with something a bit more objective in nature. If there is any debate on this, feel free to respond here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.240.78.20 (talk) 21:08, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lacus Ontarius

[edit]

In Lizars book "In the Valley of the Humber" (1913), she states that De Creux (Francis Creuxius in this article) referred to the lake as "Lacus Ouentaronius", and that it also appeared as "Ouen-tarontus" in other sources. She also states that in 1615 Champlain referred to it as "Lac des Entouhonorons", that the Iroquois referred to it as Kanadario before the arrival of Hennepin, and that in settlements along its eastern coastline is was known as Lake Catarackoui. Are there any other sources which support this?

She further mentions that the French explorers of the time interpreted descriptive names of places by native populations as the names for those places, which I believe has been stated in academic works too. Mindmatrix 19:13, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Remove and replace some photos

[edit]

Several of the photos in this article should be replaced. The nine photos below are currently in the article; beneath each photo is a reason to replace it:

Suggested Replacements. There are many pictures here which visually convey more information, and show more of Lake Ontario's diverse communities, uses, and landmarks. For example:

No map?

[edit]

The article's lack of a modern map indicating the lake's geographical features (islands, bays, etc.) and surrounding cities is a curious omission. For that matter, there is not such a map accompanying any of the main articles for the five Great Lakes. Starling2001 (talk) 18:59, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lake Ontario and St Lawrence Plan 2014 - 2017 near flood stage

[edit]
April 24, 2017

Water levels of at least 247.3 feet, four feet above the nominal level of 243 feet. Relation of new higher water level plan to help the wetland ecology surrounding the lake is controversial. With more preventative outflow, water could be lower, with none, it would have been higher. June is historic peak, water may get a foot higher.[1] Not listed in ref is a strong rainstorm that dropped several inches directly over the lake and in the basin area on the Thursday (20th) night into Friday morning.

Translation of the name of the lake

[edit]

There are two different translations provided for the name of the lake (a word/phase in the Huron language) without any acknowledgement nor explanation for the discrepancy. The first translation is: lake of shining waters; the second is: great lake. This seems to be a significant difference. This is odd and confusing. Someone with some knowledge of this should either remove the poorer version or expound upon the multiple meanings—or at the very least acknowledging there being multiple interpretations. Quite frankly, as it is now it seems like an error.
