Vivian Kong Man Wai MH (Chinese: 江旻憓; Jyutping: gong1 man4 wai6; born 8 February 1994) is a Hong Kong left-handed épée fencer, three-time individual Asian champion, two-time Olympian, and 2024 individual Olympic champion.[1][2][3]

Early Life

[edit]

Kong was born in Hong Kong in February 1994 and lived in Canada from ages of 2 to 6. She initially gained junior black belt in taekwondo in primary school. She also learned ballet and ice skating. She started fencing at 11 years old and chose Épée as it combined the pace of Taekwondo and the grace of ballet.[4]

Education

[edit]

Kong graduated from Sha Tin College, then graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of International Relations. She then studied for a Master of Law at Renmin University of China via correspondence in Hong Kong. She studies J.D. (Justice Doctor) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and aspires to work for the United Nations. She has taken a sabbatical to prepare for the Olympics. She had already rejected Canada's offer to represent the country.[4]

Career

[edit]

Kong competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. She became the first fencer from Hong Kong to win a World Cup title when she won the FIE Women's Épée World Cup in Havana, Cuba in January 2019.[5]

She won one of the bronze medals in the women's épée event at the 2022 World Fencing Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.[6]

In the women's épée event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, she defeated Ukrainian fencer Olena Kryvytska in the quarterfinals, Estonian fencer Nelli Differt in the semifinals, and won by 13-12 after overtime facing Auriane Mallo in the finals. She is the 3rd Olympic gold medalist of Hong Kong.[7]
