Im not sure what the problem is here ... it seems that the filter is triggering on any wikilink ending in .com (based on a comparison of edits you made that didn't get through versus the one that did). If this is an intentional effect I will see if it's possible to create a workaround; if not I'll get it fixed as quickly as possible. Thanks for reporting this. Soap 10:21, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

This is a fun one. Someone deserves to be trouted in that thread because he/she posted a link to tinyurl intentionally avoiding the spam filter instead of fixing the inherent problem that tinyurl should not be linked in the first place. It was the presence of this old tinyurl link that was being detected.
However, it is supposed to check for old links so that this error does not pop up. The problem ends up being that I checked the wrong variable on the old revision, so the old link was not detected, and the filter assumed you added it. I don't want to go into the technical details of what's going wrong because this is a private filter, but I have determined that there is a bug in the abuse filter system and have contacted the developers accordingly. In the meantime, I'm going to remove the tinyurl links from the old post and ask the user not to do that, as well as look for a workaround that I can use. This bug should only pop up when a transcluded page includes an old URL shortener link, which should be between extremely rare to never (preferably the latter). I sincerely apologize that you were hit by this, and wish I had more for you. In a few minutes you should be able to make the edit. Thank you for reporting this. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 11:32, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for doing that, Shirik. The person who submitted this report already did make the edit, just without the .com on the end of his one link. So you're sure that it has nothing to do with the link to bartleby.com? Soap 11:35, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

"Kulak" was on the filter and it really shouldnt have been, as it's a fairly common word in certain subject areas. Apologies for the inconvenience. This filter is designed to track a particular vandal and thus sometimes contains strange entries, things that may not seem to be offensive but help in keeping track of this person and his many sock accounts. But again, "kulak" is really going to do more harm than good, and so I've removed it. Soap 20:53, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your corrections. Please be careful not to remove the remainder of the content of the page when you make an edit. The filter was detecting that you removed all categories (located at the bottom) from the page (as well as quite a bit of other content). Well there are a few issues here: the filter is detecting that youre creating an article that contains your username, which is correct ... I recommend changing your username to something that represents you as opposed to the band, because Wikipedia account policy discourages shared accounts. This will help you get past those filters. The other thing is that the article needs a bit of work, specifically it should meet our verifiability standards so that people reading the article know that what theyre reading is true. Ideally you should find third-party sources that verify the information, rather than publications created by the band or any affiliated groups. This will also help you satisfy the last requirement, "notability". This is a tricky one, and I dont really know if your band would pass the standard as it isnt really related to the edit filter (which is just a computer program), so I would recommend working on the article in your userspace until you feel it's ready to go live and it can pass the standards laid out above. I cant figure it out either, although I do know that the reason you were able to post the message on my talk page but not on his is because my talk page isnt watched by the filter and his is. I promise to take a deeper look at this after I get home tonight, since it could be a persistent problem. Thanks for reporting this. Soap 11:17, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
It seems that the problem is the last line of code in the filter. If all but the last line is removed, all edits by all users to DGG's talk page trigger the filter and thus cannot edit. I don't know why this is. I suppose I will have to remove the last line and tell the person who created the filter about the problem. Soap 21:12, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
I see now that I was searching on a truncated version of the page and therefore couldn't find the text that was triggering the filter (and it's there). Nevertheless, this filter shouldn't cause any problems like this in the future. Soap 21:41, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

I wonder if it's time to consider disabling this filter, as it seems to have a lot of problems. It is of a type that really can only be either Disallow or nothing, since it tracks a kind of vandalism that moves very quickly. The reason it triggered on you is because archiving a page, by necessity, means deleting most of it, and that is something vandals also often do. But we have other filters that do similar things. I will look for outside opinions on the question of whether this filter is still needed. Thank you for reporting this; I'll go archive the talk page now. Soap 14:02, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Strictly speaking, this isn't a false positive; the edit filter is designed to detect whenever an editor creates a page that contains their username somewhere in the text. This in itself doesn't mean much; if I were to create an article about soap I think people would understand that it is not indicative of promotional activity; it just may need to be looked at by others. Note that the filter is not preventing you from creating the article; only warning you. However, in this case, I would say if you were to go on to create the article, it is very likely that it would be deleted, due to its apparent lack of reliable sources and in fact any sources at all other than the website, and the fact that according to the article the organization in question isn't yet in operation. If you want to go ahead, it is not my job to stop you, but I strongly suspect that your article will be deleted. Soap 16:52, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

This filter catches anything matching the pattern (string)@(domain name).(TLD) because this is what an email address looks like. Since there are a lot of other things that fit this pattern, this particular filter has a lot of false positives. However, I suggest you change to a different username, as our username policy prohibits the use of usernames that represent an organization or group of people as opposed to a single individual (a result of the fact that we also don't allow shared accounts). This filter is designed to catch whenever an editor inserts a link containing their username, as this is often a sign of promotional activity. If you are sure that your edit is good, the filter won't stop you from adding the links; however, it cannot be turned off, so if you are planning to insert a large number of links with MedPix in the URL you may want to consider changing your username, as it is at best somewhat close to a violation of the username policy against usernames that signify an organization. When a large number of people make edits to the same page in a very short time, this filter can activate and disallow editing to the page for about a minute. This helps prevent edit conflicts and in some cases vandalism. It looks like you went on to make the edit a few minutes later. Since the page has not been edited for a couple of hours now, it should be safe to continue editing if you wish. However please do note that every edit you make should conform to our standards for verifiability or it may be reverted (this also applies to the dozens of edits that were not stopped by the filter). Changed word "claimed" to "stated" and got a "potentially harmful error" message.

Sorry, this page has been placed under a sort of semi-protection now due to a history of vandalism from various users. Having the edit filter up shows that the edit you're making is constructive and can allow us to add it in whereas normal semiprotection would simply disallow entirely. However I find this solution potentially unworkable and will try to work out a better solution with the person who created the filter. In the meantime I have gone on to make the edit for you. Thanks for reporting it here. Soap 17:06, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

This particular filter will trigger on any edit that includes something that looks like an email address. As not everything that looks like an email address actually is an email address, the filter produces a lot of false positives. This does not mean that you should try to avoid triggering the filter, as it is common for legitimate edits to occasionally produce tags like this and nobody is going to hold it against you. There have been attempts made to try to re-write this filter to be more specific in order to avoid the false positives, but even despite all the changes that have been made, new false positives keep on appearing. Personally I dont think it's possible to write the filter in such a way that it would completely avoid triggering legitimate edits, though I'm open to suggestions from anyone. The filter is warning you about creating an article containing your username, which is correct. However, you should be able to create the article. Is it actually preventing you, or just warning? This looks like it should be able to go. Do be aware, though, that the edit filter only is completely agnostic about whether an article meets the standards of verifiability and notability, and that articles not meeting those standards may be deleted. The edit filter's role in this is that it triggers any time someone adds a link containing their username, which in this case you have, so strictly speaking it is not a false positive. However the edit filter says nothing about whether a given link is useful or not ... I think the most important criterion when judging the usefulness of external links is whether they answer questions the reader of the article might have in a way that the article itself can't. This may be why your previous additions of the link were reverted; however I take no position on the issue and will not remove the link myself nor add it back in if someone else removes it. Just a note, I submitted this after noticing it in my watchlist. I hope that's alright. jæs (talk) 20:21, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Because of the way MediaWiki software works, a change made to the middle of a line will be seen as the removal of the whole line and the addition of the whole modified version. Thus although this user only added 4 characters, the software searches the whole line in which they edited ... and in this case that's a whole paragraph. Further up in the paragraph there is the sequence 9999999 (in a ref), which matches the Repeating Characters filter. Unfortunately there is no good way at present to prevent false positives like this, which is why this filter is set to only tag rather than warn the user or disallow the edit entirely as some of the more exact filters do. Soap 20:22, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I see, thank you for explaining. I thought I either missed something entirely, or the edit filter was able to read between lines! Thank you, again, for clarifying. jæs (talk) 20:26, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Because you restored the original article, which contained a date in unclear format, the edit filter saw you as the one creating the date, which did indeed match the filter (xx/xx/xxxx dates are often problematic because different countries use different orders for day and month). Don't worry about this ... for one thing, the article is deleted now as it was a non-notable person, and for another thing, a lot of CSD patrollers and other highly active users will accumulate tags like this and people who have been around Wikipedia a long time will know that it isnt your fault. It isnt really possible at present to make the edit filter distinguish between the creator of an article and one who restores it after it was blanked by a vandal. Soap 10:08, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

The filter shows you removing vandalism and adding some of your own. Was this a mistake? If that edit had gone through it would likely have been reverted and you warned for making it, whatever your intentions. At any rate I removed the long paragraph of "hi kevin" now. Most times, adding email addresses into articles is inappropriate. I also note that your username matches the content of the article in question, and this is what the abuse filter was warning you about. I note that you are already blocked, but I figured I would leave you advice here anyway: Your username should not represent a company or organization, so if/when you create a new account, please be sure to create one that represents you as an individual. Additionally, you should take a look at the guidelines regarding conflicts of interest. Generally this type of editing should be avoided; if you really want to contribute in this manner, might I propose that you create a userspace draft instead so that someone can review your work? This will help address the conflict of interest. Thanks, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 23:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

I've been looking at this for a while now and I'm really having trouble figuring out exactly why you got hit by this filter. This filter is designed to stop people that hit the edit filter repeatedly, but this was your first hit. Furthermore, there were no recent hits on the page in question, either. As far as I can tell, it should never have gone off. I do have a guess though. Were you getting blocked by the spam blacklist before? Did you get any kind of error messages before you saw the one that directed you here? Any additional information would be of immense assistance, as I really am having trouble figuring out what caused this. It's the Aramaic text in the page that's causing the problem; the filter thinks it's vandalism because its larger than the rest of the line (and the filter evaluates the whole paragraph, not just the parts that are being changed). I don't see any reason why it should be that big ... I think the "big" tags should be removed altogether, but I'll leave one in. You should be able to make the edit now. I think this may be a bug in the filter which causes a sequence of "warn" filters to amount to a "disallow", thus preventing you from creating the page. You can bypass the filter by creating the content in your userpage and then moving it, but I would wait to make sure your page meets the notability and reliability criteria before doing so (I notice that someone else has already blanked your userpage for this reason). It's true that it's a false positive, as far as detecting vandalism is concerned. But the edit in question was the creation of a page that would have been deleted regardless, so this false pos is probably a poor basis for changing the filter. Someguy1221 (talk) 06:22, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Filter 58

It is most likely wrong place and wrong format to report this, but filter 58 has produced around a dozen of false positives at WP:AIV that is unusual. Could someone have a look please? Materialscientist (talk) 07:18, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Filter 58 just recently had its form changed to make it run faster; it's possible there's a bug. I'm going to look at this right now, but I'll ask anyway: Are these false positives as in "They shouldn't be immediately reported to AIV," or as in "They shouldn't have triggered a filter at all"? If it's the former, the offending phrase in the filter can be moved to filter 260. Someguy1221 (talk) 07:37, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
I removed the section of the filter I believe was causing most of the false positives. It's appropriate to filter, but only from mainspace (filter 58 filters on all namespaces). Someguy1221 (talk) 08:33, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
No there appears to be other problems as well. I reverted the recent changes to the filter until we can figure out what the problem was exactly. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 14:58, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
I apologize in advance for abrupt messaging (moving house, today). Most false positives occurred to me between these edits (the diff for timestamps only). There were one-two cases where the action might be trolling; the rest looked like innocent posts at talk pages reported as "attack on specific user". Materialscientist (talk) 23:01, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Oh sorry for not keeping this up-to-date. User:Tim1357 has isolated the problem; the changes that were made recently were partially generated by a script which did not correctly parse unicode characters, resulting in a flaw in the regular expression. I think this should be fixed now, so please point it out if it occurs again. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 23:05, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

It wasn't blocked, it was merely tagged for further review. Unfortunately, most tags are always going to have a few false positives. Please don't feel like you're being labeled a vandal of any sort, these tags are just used to help patrollers identify unusual activity (which, in your case, was the fact that you removed over 7000 characters from that article). Any patroller that sees this tag would investigate the edit, realize there's nothing wrong with it, and move on. Sorry you got hit by this, but there's really no way for the filter to detect what is a legitimate edit and what isn't when deleting large amounts of content, and that's why this filter is a "tag only" filter and not a "disallow" filter. Thanks for the report,Shirik (Questions or Comments?)20:30, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Technically it was warn and tag (one doesnt imply the other) ... I agree though that this filter definitely should stay on and that there is no realistic way to improve it such that it won't at least occasionally produce false positives like this. The software isnt capable of making intelligent judgments like that, or of noticing whether a particular edit is a large deletion from one section or several small deletions/insertions from many sections which all add up to a single large deletion. If it were possible to make such a distinction, we would do something like that in order to prevent people becoming unduly annoyed. Soap 20:50, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting this. The trigger that set off the filter was the "your mother" line about halfway; this is one of the false positives that I knew was going to happen when we set up this filter but it also stops so much vandalism that I dont think disabling the filter will be possible right now. Since pretty much every occurrence of "your mom" except quotes can be replaced by a paraphrase, I will change the page to read "maternal grandmother" (another alternative would simply be "mother's mother" without the possessive your). The capitalized ASS in GRASS is what set off the filter; while this is technically a false positive, the style guidelines discourage writing anything in capitals anywhere, not just "rude words", except for acronyms. So you should create this page with those words in lowercase. Additionally the title at the top is not necessary since the MediaWiki software gives each article a title anyway. Lastly, please be aware that any article that doesnt stand up to the guidlines ofverifiability and notability will be deleted, regardless of any style concerns. I believe that this article would in fact qualify for deletion for that reason. Soap 14:01, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Sorry you got hit by this, and thanks for the report. Normally "fucked" wouldn't trip the filter, you're right. Amusingly, the phrase "album fucked" contains the phrase "bum fucked" which we consider to be always bad, and that's what it was finding. I have added a "word boundary" condition to the "bum" part of that so that "album" no longer matches. You should be able to make your edit now. I do advise that you try to cite your source for this comment, though. Thanks for your contributions!--Shirik (Questions or Comments?)15:02, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

The Manual of Style does not allow linking to external sites in the header of a page, or for that matter, anywhere on the page if it's about somebody else. If you want to create an article about yourself, feel free to do so but only if you are sure that you meet the standards for notability for politicians, and that you can prove that by adding clearly reliable third party sources to establish that. Using your website would not be sufficient because it isn't a third party source. If you are not sure that you can meet these inclusion standards then I wouldnt recommend trying to create the article; we have lots of active contributors seeking to fill gaps in our coverage of politicians. I was wrong on a user talk page

Hi there. This filter is designed to protect the talk pages of other editors. Generally if you want to take back something you said, you should "strike it out" by putting <s> and </s> around it to make text like this, and then add text about why you're taking it back. This ensures that if anyone read it before, they understand that you take back what you said and corrected it. Happy editing! Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 04:39, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

The filter sees this as vandalism because of the way the MediaWiki software operates. When you modify a paragraph, or sometimes even move a paragraph, the software sees the entire paragraph as being part of the addition, so if that paragraph contains a stopword it will be considered to have been added by you. This is true for all editors, whether they be IP's, regular accounts, or administrators. The filter strictly speaking is supposed to trigger only when someone is replacing a page with obscenities, but has been coded in such a way that small expansions such as this will also trigger it, since sometimes a vandal will repeat a phrase many times. I apologize for the disruption ... note that normal day to day editing of that page will not generally trigger that filter. Did you get what you needed done, or do you want the page to be edited still ? Soap 00:21, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Most of it is now done, but not all. I tried doing each little bit individually (which artificially hikes my edit count and the page history now looks like I don't know what the "preview" button is for), and got most done, but it still won't let me add a {{subst:unsignedIP2|20:27, 14 January 2010|82.152.215.223}}; if you check the filter log above you'll see there are now two more entries. Any chance that you could add that template please? --Redrose64 (talk) 02:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Repeatedly adding links to a single website is discouraged, and even when the links are legitimate there is a limit on how many such additions you can make per hour. I dont see any "disallow" entries in your filter log, so my guess is you did not hit that limit, but if you're just wondering why you're being tagged at all, this is the reason why, and unfortunately it's not yet possible to sort out legitimate hits from spamming. It was your edit summary that set off the filter, not anything in the edit itself. Using capitals for things that aren't acronyms is generally considered over-reacting because edit summaries stay in the page forever and can't be undone. I would recommend try to appear calm at all times and refrain from using all-caps in edit summaries. Soap 18:59, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Comments

You can lay off the patronizing attitude. Caps are used for emphasis in places where italics and bold are not available. Having to repeatedly remove factually incorrect information posted by a single editor requires emphasis. 75.2.209.226 (talk) 14:42, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm giving you general purpose advice based on what I've seen happen before; this is not something I've made up, and not something I could change if I wanted. If you want to know the specific stopword that set off the filter, it was HITLER. Not every capitalized word is going to set off the edit filter like this, but the practice of avoiding all-caps in edit summaries, even for emphasis, is something that I feel is a good idea to follow even apart of the issue of setting off the edit filter. Apologies, you probably can guess why it was being tagged as vandalism due to the subject matter. I havent disabled the filter, but rewritten it such that you should be able to continue now with no impact on the intended function of the filter. Soap 23:20, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

I have changed the filter so that it should go through. Thanks for reporting this. Feel free to re-post here if you have any further problems. Soap 11:21, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Not really appropriate commentary for an article; please see WP:NOTFORUM. Soap 11:21, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

[[Submission_management]] (filter log) (redo)
Description
This page only addressed one aspect of submission management i.e. related to pharmaceutical regulatory submissions. However, I feel that there is much more to submission management that just this. After my edit, this page will give a more holistic view of submission management including that in the context of pharmaceuticals. I have not 'removed' all the sections of the previous revision, rather I have shifted the content of the previous revision to sub-sections in the current revision with some irrelevant and redundant content removed for the moment. I plan to re-phrase that content and bring them back into this article in future revisions. You can probably add a new clause in your automated filter that checks whether or not all the content in major sections of a previous revision was moved to sub-sections in the new proposed revision. If yes, then a warning may not be shown to the editor of a page.

I can't tell, off the top of my head, why the "removing categories" filter was triggered; perhaps it actually considered 'orphaned articles' to be a category or perhaps it's just a bug. As for the content you added, to me it looks like you've added a lot of unreferenced content, and marked those paragraphs out with 'fact' tags'. That is really not what the purpose of fact tags is. If you know something to be true but can't prove it, you should not add it at all, except at best on the talk page of the article where you can ask someone who might have access to better sources to verify the information. The filter was set off by the series of exclamation points in the article. However, even apart from that, an article like this would likely be deleted, so I would not recommend creating it until you can be sure that it meets our standards for creation, particularly WP:V and WP:N. The filter erred here, but what you've been adding is irrelevant to the article and would have been removed anyway.—Jeremy (v^_^v Dittobori) 02:42, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Fixed; I suggest the best solution would be to find whatever phrase it was that originally caused that to be added, and use a more complete version of that phrase so that this false positive won't come up again. Soap 21:58, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Description
I have over the months added considerable information on many different wikipedia pages about coffee maker brands, varieties, current machines available, coffee pods. Also editing out discontinued machines, and fixing spelling errors. However when I leave an external link to one of my coffee maker consumer reviews sites, they are normally taken off a month or two later. Why is this? I never simply add a link to page that I haven't edited considerably. Please advise???

I have looked at all of your edits. You have repeatedly added links to pages at http://www.singlecupcoffee411.com andhttp://www.coffeemakers411.com, which are totally promotional in character. Every one of these pages is determined to tell us how wonderful a particular product is. (For example, [2],[3],[4], etc.) Your user name also suggests a possible conflict of interest in linking to this site, as does your saying "when I leave an external link to one of my coffee maker consumer reviews sites" (my emphasis). You have also linked to http://www.coffee.org/, which is a page existing for the purpose of selling products. Also, although it is off the subject of link addition, this edit is full of promotional language, and not remotely suitable for an encyclopedia article. Have you read the guideline on external links to avoid? If you have you will be aware that such links are not acceptable. Points 4, 5 and 14 are all likely to be relevant to this case. I also suggest reading the policy on using Wikipedia as a means of promotion and the guideline on conflict of interest. Filter caught "User adds link containing username". In light of the above this is not a false positive: spam linking.JamesBWatson (talk) 21:53, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
