Need help with an editnotice[edit]

I created an editnotice for my alternative user talk page, why isn't it working? — AP 499D25 (talk) 04:22, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AP 499D25 Wikipedia:Editnotice says that Anyone can create an editnotice for a user or user talk page. (But editnotices for user sub-pages can only be created by admins, template editors, and page movers.), which means you'll have to request that Template:Editnotices/Page/User talk:AP 499D25/AltSpace be created by placing the edit template-protected template on Template talk:Editnotices/Page/User talk:AP 499D25/AltSpace User:CanonNi (talkcontribs) 04:31, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks! I knew there would be and I think I may have read something like that, but somehow I had completely missed it this time. — AP 499D25 (talk) 04:36, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Address on Wikipedia article[edit]

I have adjusted the address on Wikipedia article, however, the map is still showing the outdated one. I have also adjusted address on OpenStreetMap, but nothing changes. What should I do? EFIEDUCATION (talk) 11:17, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the OP's previous post, this relates to the Fashion Retail Academy article. TSventon (talk) 11:30, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
EFIEDUCATION address and geo coordinates have to be changed separately. You can look up an online address-to-geo coord converter, put in the new address, and put the correct coordinates into Fashion Retail Academy's Wikidata entry. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 13:15, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. Someone already updated the Wikidata entry. The article is still confused though - interestingly enough, the map is centered on the wrong location but has the marker in the correct spot. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 13:23, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sungodtemple: The centering of the map was based on the coordinates in Wikidata, which were for the previous location. I've changed them, and the map is now properly centered. Deor (talk) 15:56, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@EFIEDUCATION:@Sungodtemple: OK, I was confused, since the Fashion Retail Academy article itself still had the coordinates of the former location. I've emended them and undone my Wikidata change, so now the map is showing the correct location (though still uncentered, since it is trying to include both the old location and the new one). Perhaps the centering issue is a caching problem that will be cleared up in time. Deor (talk) 16:39, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Party colour in table[edit]

Could someone have a look at the table in Waveney_Valley_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Boundaries and point out the presumably blindingly obvious mistake I'm making? To me, the code I'm using for party colo(u)r seems to match that in the table in Waveney_Valley_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Members_of_Parliament, but it isn't working. I asked at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Politics_of_the_United_Kingdom#Party_colour_in_table:_Help! an hour ago but no-one seems to be picking up on it, and the article looks a bit of a mess (though I've still got in use on it, as an excuse). Post a Biography[edit]

Hello, I would like to post the biography of a Trinidad and Tobagoian psychiatrist and researcher who has added to the history of suicide information. Please advise on how I could do that. TrinbagoianNetwork (talk) 15:56, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It would have to be someone who met the notability guideline. It is also important to avoid conflict of interest situations.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:36, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, TrinbagoianNetwork. Many people who try the challenging task of creating a new article without spending a considerable time learning how Wikipedia works and how to interact with other editors, have a frustrating and miserable experience. I always advise new editors to not even think about creating a new article until they have spent at least a few weeks making improvements to existing articles, and learning about such core concepts as verifiability, reliable sources, neutral point of view, and notability.
Once they have an understanding of those ideas, then is the time to read your first article carefully, and start looking for the reliable independent sources| without which an article is impossible. If they can find these, then they can start writing a summary of what those sources say - not a summary of what they themselves know about the subject. ColinFine (talk) 19:41, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is it really a Featured List?[edit]

A brand new article, Ranveer Singh Filmography, has a star at the top to proclaim that it is a Featured List. I would like to verify if this is true - is there somewhere to check whether a particular article is actually a Featured List? I looked at Wikipedia:Featured lists but it does not appear to have any search capability like this. Gronk Oz (talk) 16:03, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is not listed at WP:FL so I have removed the Featured list template. Also a FL would normally have an Article history with a link to the FL nomination discussion on its talk page. TSventon (talk) 16:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Thanks for that. For the dummies, where were you able to check this on WP:FL? I looked all over there, but could not see where I could verify this... --Gronk Oz (talk) 16:27, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gronk Oz: I unhid the Media section and checked Wikipedia:Featured lists#Filmographies. TSventon (talk) 16:35, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do28ris, that happens when the screen is too narrow to display a search box. There should be a magnifying glass icon at the top of the page and if you click on it the search box should come back. TSventon (talk) 19:02, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is your question? You resubmitted Draft:Rashtriya Jankranti Morcha six days ago, and you have continued to make improvements to it. It does not look to me as if you have enough sources that meet the triple criteria in 42 to establish notability, as many of them seem to be mere listings, or about their performance in a particular election. But I may be wrong. ColinFine (talk) 22:33, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Downtown Community School[edit]

Is it possible to add several other prominent alumni to the entry on Downtown Community School? If so, how does one go about doing that? 2601:40F:4400:C220:1DFD:6ED7:2789:D0ED (talk) 21:03, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The article Downtown Community School is in poor condition, probably because it closed down 53 years ago, and few people care about it now. As for alumni, Richard Kostelanetz is the first one mentioned, but no reference to a reliable source is given, and his own biography article does not mention that he attended the school. That is not good at all. The relevant policy is verifiability. My opinion, which is widely shared, is that only alumni who are the subjects of Wikipedia articles should be included as alumni, and it us not the role of an individual Wikipedia editor to decide that some person is "prominent". So, if you want to add alumni, I recommend that you limit yourself to those who already have Wikipedia biographies that verify that the people in question attended the Downtown Community School. Bio of a living person[edit]

Hi! I would like to create an article about a public person, a politician. He/she is charged with attempted murder, it is in the indictment, plus I have some 17 sources that claim the same. He/she was in prison for that, but released because got elected and has immunity now. Is it against the BLP policy of the Wikipedia to write it down the article that he/she is charged with attempted murder? Addmorefueltothefire (talk) 10:45, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at WP:SUSPECT (presumption of innocence) and WP:NPOL (notability) to help you decide whether this article should be created. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 10:52, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Addmorefueltothefire, and welcome to the Teahouse, and to Wikipedia.
I would very strongly advise against doing this, for several reasons.
First, creating a new article, even on an uncontroversial topic, is much more challenging than most new editors imagine, and where people try to do so without first spending some weeks or months practising editing Wikipedia and learning how Wikipedia works, they usually have a frustrating and disappointing time, and often do not succeed in creating an article at all. With a possibly controversial topic, this can be even worse.
Secondly, Claudine has drawn your attention to the special concerns for writing about people accused of crimes.
Thirdly, your language above, together with your chosen account name, make me think that you have strong opinions about this person's guilt, one way or another. Please be aware that advocacy of any kind is not permitted on Wikipedia, and coming in with that intention would make the task harder still. HaMerotz LaMillion (and all of its' seasons)[edit]

The articles about the TV show HaMerotz LaMillion, the Israeli version of The Amazing Race (General article, season 1, season 2, season 3, season 4, season 5, season 6, season 7, season 8, and the ongoing season 9) all don't have sources and are too much database-like (Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a database). The creator of this database that I will on purpose not tag (Xoruz) has been working on this for years, and has not been caught doing this yet. It includes episode-specific summaries, every and every spot the participants visited, and the worst part - it has almost no sources. Even the original, Hebrew article isn't this detailed.

In addition to that, it contains spoilers for future legs of the race (in the current season).

Do we ask them to condense the article dramatically, or delete them since there is no way to get sources? In my opinion, deleting the articles will extremely depress the creator, since this is obviously an obsessive personal project. And of course there is also a possibility to leave this as it is, though that would go against the rules of Wikipedia, unless the rules are different for TV shows and series.

CRplayz7 (talk) 11:41, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am active on the Hebrew Wikipedia, and less on the English one, so if it looks weird that I don't have a user or talk page - that's why :) CRplayz7 (talk) 11:42, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CRplayz7: I'm not going to evaluate the articles but MOS:PLOTSOURCE says: "The plot summary for a work, on a page about that work, does not need to be sourced with in-line citations, as it is generally assumed that the work itself is the primary source for the plot summary." PrimeHunter (talk) 11:49, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response!
I'll leave the sources outside. The spoilers regarding the future legs of the race in season 9 are not of the work YET - and should be deleted, in my opinion.
In addition, the article is way too long and unnecessary. Therefore, I suggest placing the condense article template in the top of the page. Since I'm not a regular user on this Wikipedia, and don't know the template names, I wanted to know what's the procedure for placing them and if someone would be so kind to do so.
Thank you! CRplayz7 (talk) 14:10, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter CRplayz7 (talk) 14:10, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First, MOS:TVPLOT allows episode summaries of 200 words, and each individual episode summary for HaMerotz LaMillion 9 is compliant. Second, you removed two outside sources that listed future legs. Spoilers that are properly cited are allowed under Wikipedia:Spoiler. Also, there are 34 sources for season 9. What do you mean no sources? Xoruz (talk) 19:56, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prime Hunter has brought the sources not being needed to my attention.
Regarding the spoilers - someone who wants to check out what happened in the previous episodes doesn't have to see the future legs - it ruins the experience and doesn't add anything to the article. It's just annoying. CRplayz7 (talk) 05:07, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fault in a 'Help' page (non-working video tutorial)[edit]

What are the best places to report faults? In this case, the fault is with a video tutorial on the following 'Help' page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Sandbox_tutorial) with the video failing to play. I've checked the page for the video file at Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tutorial_on_starting_a_sandbox_article_on_Wikipedia.ogv) & attempting to play the video there produces the following error message "No compatible source was found for this media.". As well, the page shows caption text that may suggest that the file has been hacked? I've been through the 'Help' pages & there's no obvious place to report a fault like this. What do you recommend? how to change a title for an article?[edit]

I have a task to edit and correct an article for a governmental event, and I was able to edit everything but could not change its title. So what can the problem be? Janaalrifaey (talk) 22:52, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Janaalrifaey. This is about the World Government Summit. If you have been "tasked" with editing this article, then please make the mandatory Paid contributions disclosure with your next edit. You cannot change the title because you are not WP:AUTOCONFIRMED, which requires an account four full days old and 10 edits. WP:COMMONNAME is the relevant guideline. For a "governmental event", we do not use the official government name, but rather the name used by most of the reliable sources discussing the event. Cullen328 (talk) 01:48, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, changing an article's title is not done by editing it in the same way as its content, but by another process, which I will not mention at this point since it's unclear as yet if you should be doing so. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.6.82.201 (talk) 07:03, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This works: (example[1])

Hi SummeRStorM79 I have "mended" it by removing the hidden text formatting (<!-- -->) from around his name on the edit page. Pittsburgh Penguins roster has a reference to the roster on the official NHL site [2]. Tristan Jarry is there but not Jack St. Ivany so I commented him out.[3] He is on the roster of the affiliated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as a prospect for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He might make the main team later so I didn't remove him completely. The displayed players on the template now match the NHL roster. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:12, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Spicemix: All links in that section currently use annotated link which automatically displays a short description stored in the target page. Short descriptions are displayed in many other places. I guess you only want to change what is displayed at Panchaloha#See also. You can omit annotated link and write your own link and description, e.g. changing Brass to Brass – Copper-zinc alloy, or whatever you want. But one of these is a mere list entry for "Milton Eugene Gardner", so effectively the article has just a single source. This sole source is titled "Milton E. Gardner" and repeatedly refers to the man as "Milton". Very possibly "Eugene Gardner" is the best title for the article, but if so the article provides no evidence for this. If the current title is indeed the best choice, put him under "E". If, as I suspect, it is not, then first move the article accordingly and then put him under "M". -- Hoary (talk) 22:21, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using ChatGPT for proofreading[edit]

I sometimes use ChatGPT for proofreading my edits, particularly new articles. I submit my text and ask it to "revise it, highlighting any changes in bold." Is that a problem, and should I disclose it anywhere? Amayorov (talk) 16:48, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please read and carefully consider WP:LLM, in particular § Disclosure: Every edit that incorporates LLM output should be marked as LLM-assisted by identifying the name and, if possible, version of the AI in the edit summary. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 03:58, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is very helpful, thanks a lot! I'll be using more primitive tools, such as the Free Online Grammar Checker, then. Amayorov (talk) 09:01, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to request a move?[edit]

So I put in a move request for moving Lenna to Lena, it's currently sitting at the bottom of Talk:Lenna. Did I do it right, or is there a specific protocol to follow? guninvalid (talk) 16:48, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

guninvalid, the process is at Wikipedia:Requested moves. You need to show that Lena is the WP:COMMONNAME rather than Lenna. Also Lena is a WP:DISAMBIGUATION page, so you could either

Autoconfirmed Account[edit]

When will my account be "autoconfirmed" so I can move article from Sandbox to Wikipedia? Mlondon101 (talk) 20:22, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your account needs to be four days old and have at least ten edits per WP:AUTOCONFIRM. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 20:36, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why the rush, Mlondon101? You'd be better off ensuring that the main text of User:Mlondon101/sandbox is stripped of external links, and that what the draft says is backed up with references to reliable sources. -- Hoary (talk) 21:59, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No signatures for sports biographies?[edit]

Why isn't there any template data for adding signatures to sports biography articles? Athletes very often do so, yet, it can’t be added to improve the articles. Why so? Roasted (talk) 22:54, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request Category Removal For A Wikipedia Article[edit]

The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas Wikipedia article has two incorrect categories listed on the page that need to be removed:

1) American People Who self-identify as being of Lipan Apache Descent

2) Unrecognized Tribes in the United States.

The page itself says at the top they are a state recognized tribe. Can someone remove those categories from the page?

Thank you Whitewolfdog1 (talk) 00:55, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The page doesn't seem to be protected, I suggest you WP:BOLDLY remove those categories if there is no source for them on the page. Or you can leave an a comment on the talk page. J2UDY7r00CRjH (talk) 01:12, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you. I'll go ahead and do that then.
Are there any special instructions for deleting categories? Whitewolfdog1 (talk) 02:28, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the edit button at the top of the page. Scroll down to the very bottom where you will see a list of categories of the form

Delete the categories whose categorization is not sourced in the references of the article or that are directly contradicted by the references in the article. In the edit summary, give a short description of why you made the change and be sure to mention that you believe the article has not given a source for the claimed categorization given by the categories you are removing. Eg: "removed category x, no source for the claim that article y is in category x." If you check back later and find that someone reverted your changes, go to the talk page of the article and give a longer explanation of your view. Be sure to inform the person that reverted it by using the formula @UserWhoRevertedYou eg. @Whitewolfdog1 which will look like @Whitewolfdog1. If nobody responds to your point after one day then you can change it back to what you believe is appropriate. Most likely this will not be necessary but it may be useful here or in future edits you make. J2UDY7r00CRjH (talk) 03:58, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Convention for romanization of author names from foreign language sources?[edit]

I can see that we have citation parameters for the translations of titles, chapters and quotations of non-english for instance:

|title=Tōkyō tawā |script-title=ja:東京タワー |trans-title=Tokyo Tower

However I cannot see the equivalent parameter for author names. e.g:

|script-last1=ko:홍 |trans-last1=Hong |script-first1=ko:이섭 |trans-first1=Yi-Seop

Therefore, how are these situations best handled? Is there a MOS?

Example approaches I can think of:

• Romanized: Hong, Yi-Seop (2011) [1971]. 세종대왕 [Sejong the Great] (in Korean) (9th ed.). Seoul [서울]: Sejong the Great Memorial Society [세종대왕기념사업회]. ISBN 978-89-8275-660-3.
• Original script: , 이섭 (2011) [1971]. 세종대왕 [Sejong the Great] (in Korean) (9th ed.). Seoul [서울]: Sejong the Great Memorial Society [세종대왕기념사업회]. ISBN 978-89-8275-660-3.
• Both using first and last fields: Hong [], Yi-Seop [이섭] (2011) [1971]. 세종대왕 [Sejong the Great] (in Korean) (9th ed.). Seoul [서울]: Sejong the Great Memorial Society [세종대왕기념사업회]. ISBN 978-89-8275-660-3.
• Both using author field: Hong Yi-Seop [홍이섭] (2011) [1971]. 세종대왕 [Sejong the Great] (in Korean) (9th ed.). Seoul [서울]: Sejong the Great Memorial Society [세종대왕기념사업회]. ISBN 978-89-8275-660-3.

Ideally, I think we should provide both to broaden SEO in both languages... but there doesn't seem to be a "clean" way of doing this? Or is there? In the absence of being able to do both via different parameters, is there any community consensus on how to best approach this? Any advice appreciated. Nonabelian (talk) 07:19, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can't see a parameter for that either. I took a brief look at Korea-related FA's and most of the Korean authors only had their names' romanizations listed. WP:MOSKOREA seems to imply romanized spellings are preferred in most places. Per WP:CITEVAR though, you should use whatever style the rest of the article uses.
