Wikipedia:WikiProject Organized Labour/Summaries

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the Summary department of WikiProject Organized Labour. This page contains information about the "Article Summary" boxes found on Labour related articles. These boxes have been created to assist with the Internationalisation efforts to translate pages for the sister wiki projects. The summary box provides a concise text for translation to other languages.

Purpose

[edit]

There are two lines of thought behind the use of the summary boxes.

1. Translation - as part of the Internationalisation effort at the project, the summary provides an excellent text that can be easily translated into additional languages to be exported to our sister Wikipedia projects.

2. Casual readers - in many circumstances casual readers do not/will not read an entire article. By providing a summary we can establish a usefulness as both an in-depth encyclopedia source, and as a quick reference - where readers know they can quickly find a brief outline of the subject.

Format

[edit]

The purpose of the summary is to summarize. With that in mind the format restricts many items.

  • A maximum of 150 words. This is where your ability to pick the appropriate single word will come in useful.
  • No pictures. Leave them in the main article.
  • No external links.
  • No sub-headings.
  • No new material. The text should reflect what is written in the body of the article. If you want to improve the article, make the changes in the body first - then update the summary.

Instructions

[edit]

The summary is generated through the use of the {{Article summary}} template. It is placed in the "See also" section of the article page and generates the box shown on the right.

1. If there is no summary box on the page

  • Simply edit the article in question, and add {{Article summary}} to the "See also" section of the page.
  • Save your edit.
  • An empty summary box should now be on the page.

2. If there is an empty summary box on the page

  • Use the edit link in the summary box to open the Summary page.
  • Enter your summary text.
  • Save your edit.
  • Return to the main page, the summary text should now appear in the box.

3. To make changes to a summary box

  • Use the edit link in the summary box to open the Summary page.
  • Enter your summary text changes.
  • Save your edit.
  • Return to the main page, the summary text should now reflect your changes.
