Beginning with the colonization of the Americas, a chronological and topical analysis of art from Africa, the Americas, and Europe, with particular focus on the Black diaspora. Major themes will include, contemporary art from the Black diaspora, African art prior to or at the inception of the colonial period, the history of enslavement and the Middle Passage, African diasporic religions, African liberation movements and modernity, and African tourism and/or art world negotiations and success. Readings come from a range of disciplinary literatures and often pair articles on contemporary artists with texts on their historical reference points.
