Wikipedia talk:Autobahn infobox template

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This whole template is a bad idea. Infoboxes are for general information, not a listing of every single exit. The latter can go in the article text (see State Route 13 (Georgia) for a simple example). --SPUI (T - C) 02:28, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dare to object. This whole thing works rather well, not only on en: but on de:, nl: and pl: also. Especially since it is portable, and having a list of all exits in the text (for example in an article like Bundesautobahn 7) would severely clog up the articles. --doco () 11:51, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Interstate 95 in Florida has a large table in the text. What clogs up the article is forcing it to the right side; one can skip the exit list if it's part of the text, but has to deal with it if it's on the right. --SPUI (T - C) 11:18, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like the infobox too, it's full of good information. However, it is too large. Is there a way to make it narrower? Also, adding a show/hide link like the one on {{afd}} would solve a lot of problems with layouot this causes. Zocky | picture popups 13:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how well show/hide would work with right-aligned images below. --SPUI (T - C) 11:18, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SPUI: we had this discussion already at Talk:Bundesautobahn 1. There may be room for improvement in the Autobahn infobox, but the alternative you proposed was a complete mess and made the article unreadable. --Qualle (talk) 18:54, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uh... how did it make the article unreadable? It REMOVED the bloody box from the right side and put it in its own section. --SPUI (T - C) 03:57, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Which resulted in an ugly section of article that went on dwindling and dwindling over the whole page, and omitted quite a lot of information that is otherwise easily put into the box by those cute little signs you seem to dislike so much. The box stays. --doco () 07:33, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
...not to mention those useless, pixel-ish and inherently inaccurate diagrams of the intersection's configuration --Qualle (talk) 13:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Trying to remain civil. I think your solution is suboptimal because
  • It wastes a lot of screen real estate because of its sheer size
  • When there is somthing in the "notes" column, it's usually something that can be said by one or two small icons just as well (if not better)
  • The exact configuration of an exit/intersection is irrelevant as long as you can enter/exit from/to every direction
  • Wikipedia is not a travel guide - the list of exits itself is a borderline case. Expanding it to a size that makes up more than two thirds of the article crosses the line.
I'd also appreciate if you refraind from calling anything you disagree with "ugly", "stupid" or a "bad idea". It would make it much easier to reach a compromise.
BTW, I'd still ove to see your diagram of Kreuz Kaiserberg 51°26′31″N 06°48′19″E / 51.44194°N 6.80528°E / 51.44194; 6.80528 ;-) --Qualle (talk) 13:25, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/I-95 exit list - no consensus.
By the way, I'm not saying my interchange diagrams should stay. Those were more of an experiment on this article; none of my other exit lists (Interstate 85 in South Carolina is a recent one) use them. --SPUI (T - C) 17:51, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

rm'd cleanup tag

[edit]

As this discussion seems to be dead and since putting cleanup on the template places _all_ articles that use the template in Category:Wikipedia cleanup I have removed the cleanup tag. --doco () 14:57, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion is dead because you're not discussing it. --SPUI (T - C) 19:34, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So it is dead. QED. --doco () 20:53, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then I'll start removing the huge infoboxes. --SPUI (T - C) 22:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am using a screen resolution of 768x1024, and from looking at this version, the screen is taken up by a giant box, crushing all of the text to nearly half of the left side of the page. If I get this using this res, then imagine the folks using 600x800 res. So whatever yall decide to do, try and not make the box so big. Thank you. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:34, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My screen resolution's 800x600, and the thing basically gets messed up whenever some exit ends up with * Hintertupfing-Oberblaselhubel (under construction) (opens 2008) without any BR tags in it. --doco () 19:47, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possible infobox hide/show solution?

[edit]

Since there are some people who object to the long exit lists and the clutter they may cause, why not implement a Javascript hide/show link in the infobox like Template:Dynamic navigation box with image uses so that the infobox (sans the shield, maybe) can be flipped out of view, should the user wish to do so? --doco () 19:47, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why fix something that's not broken? --SPUI (T - C) 22:29, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Because his option is the best of both world's and frankly it is a great compromise. Users basically can pick which view they'd prefer to see. It's brilliant, frankly I wish we'd thought of it for California and prevented this long protracted war. I would wholeheartedly support this brilliant compromise implimentation. JohnnyBGood t c VIVA! 23:37, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How the hell is it a great compromise? Those who lose the most - those with small monitors and old browsers - won't be able to hide the list. Those who wish to print the exit list will have to print it with text to the left. Notes such as cities, partial interchanges and split exits cannot be included in the small space to the right. Images will still be pushed down - and how will the browser react when the exit list is hidden and the images jump up? --SPUI (T - C) 03:41, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I'm with SPUI on this one. Bad idea. Rebecca 03:56, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The Interstate 95 in Florida mentioned above (same idea in Highway 401 (Ontario)) appears like a more elegant solution, as does the cut&paste out of the infobox example shown above by SPUI. Anytime the infobox gets much bigger than the article, the initial benefit of the infobox (cohesive, compact synopsis) is totally lost. Bridesmill 15:21, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
