Using and sharing open educational resources helps to:

1. Maximise flexibility for students and teachers
2. Maximise future utility of teaching materials
3. Maximise digitisation
4. Maximise openness
5. Maximise capacity of graduates to have ongoing, convenient access to learning materials

This is an excellent example of the utility of an open educational resource - by using a free and open source svg editor (such as inkscape), the diagram below can be edited, improved, changed, and re-used. Do you know any commercial publisher which let's you do this with its learning objects? Unlikely.
