欧亚大草原

欧亚大草原（英语：Eurasian Steppe 或 Great Steppe、The Steppes 等），是指一个西起匈牙利，穿越乌克兰和中亚，东至满洲，绵延约8,000公里的草原地区。[1] 本地区可细分为蒙古高原－大兴安岭草地区、阿拉山口、哈萨克草原、乌拉尔－里海草原、东欧大草原等。位在潘诺尼亚平原的潘诺尼亚草原（英语：Pannonian Steppe）虽没有与其他草原相连，但被归属本地区。[2] 本地区是地球上面积最大的温带草原，其东西向最远距离几乎达地球周长的五分之一。[3]
多个山脉将草原分割成不同部分，但骑兵可以轻易跨越此类障碍；因此，在大部分的时间里，长期生活在本地区的族群经常本地区进行互动。但是，在古代，长期生活在本地区的族群自己留下的有关文字纪录相对稀少。中国大陆、中东和欧洲地区的记录，也只讲述各自草原边境有限范围内发生的事情。考古学提供真实但有限的帮助（本地区有许多酋长坟墓有墓葬遗物）。直到公元1000年左右，关于本地区人群互动的资讯仍充满很大的不确定性。[1]
本地区一直是最重要的旅行和贸易经过地区之一。这片平坦的土地提供亚洲和欧洲之间理想的交通路线。以马、驴和骆驼作交通凭借的人类活动在此发生达数千年。本地区最著名的贸易路线是丝绸之路，建立于约西元前200年。[3] 13世纪时，蒙古领袖成吉思汗率领其族人组成的骑兵部队，征服几乎整个欧亚草原上的人群。[3] 对成吉思汗和其族人十分关键的马术文化，至今对大多数欧亚草原本土文化来说仍很重要。从东方的蒙古到俄罗斯西部的哥萨克，这些人群都依赖马在广阔的草原上进行各种重要的活动。现今，本地区许多节庆和社群活动都仍以骑马为主题。[3]
