WikiProject Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL)

About the Biodiversity Heritage Library

[edit]

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (Q172266) is the world’s largest open access digital library for biodiversity literature and archives. BHL is revolutionizing global research by providing free, worldwide access to knowledge about life on Earth.

Headquartered at the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives in Washington, D.C., BHL operates as a worldwide consortium of natural history, botanical, research, and national libraries working together to address this challenge by digitizing the natural history literature held in their collections and making it freely available for open access as part of a global biodiversity community.

Through ongoing collaboration, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to open access, the Biodiversity Heritage Library will continue to transform research on a global scale and ensure that everyone, everywhere has the information and tools they need to study, explore and conserve life on Earth.

Goals

[edit]

Wikidata is a global information broker and collaboratively edited knowledge graph that can facilitate the semantic enrichment and rapid dissemination of data present in the BHL corpus.

BHL Wikidata Goals

  1. Work towards global authority control for named entities in BHL e.g. authors, publishers, collectors, taxons, and works (books, journals, archives, articles)
  2. Crowdsource and harvest metadata to provide additional search access points for named entities in BHL
  3. Grow BHL's network knowledge graph to connect to other biodiversity knowledge bases, projects, and initiatives
  4. Surface BHL data and content via the emergent global knowledge graph also known as the semantic web
